Photos and Description of this South French Broad holiday house

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

This charming home in the heart of Asheville recalls the elegance of bygone days. The ground floor has a full 1250 square feet of private space, including 2 large bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room with sleeper sofa, and a large, fully equipped kitchen and dining area.

Green Gables of Asheville, restored by the Interior Designer/Owner, features high coffered ceilings and original period details throughout. Each of the two large bedrooms has its own wood-burning fireplace and seating area. The living room, furnished with the comfortable elegance of 1920's period antiques, features a third fireplace and a large flat screen with high definition cable TV and DVD player. There are beautiful antique chandeliers, ceiling fans, and restored heart-of-pine wood floors throughout.

The large second bathroom (en-suite master bath) features twin lavatories, a shower, and a deep soaking tub in a separate alcove with an antique stained glass window and candle sconces on the tumbled-travertine walls. The porcelain floor tiles are heated. Plug cell phones and computers directly into special wall outlets for recharging.

Green Gables is CLOSE TO EVERYTHING – so take a break from sightseeing or shopping to relax on the huge wrap around porch. Sit in the romantic swing that overlooks the gardens or dine al fresco, and watch the dozens of birds that frequent the bird feeders all day long. The porch is the place to gather on balmy summer evenings to watch the moon rise and to soak up the relaxing, candlelight atmosphere.

Maps and activity guides are provided to help you plan your days and evenings. The home is provided with every convenience – soaps, shampoo and luxury towels, cable TV and CD player (IPod ready), lots of board games, entertainment libraries, wireless high-speed internet, unlimited long distance telephone, a fully equipped gourmet kitchen with outdoor gas grill, cribs and high chair for babies, and luxurious linens and pillow-top mattresses that promise a restful night’s sleep.

The famous BILTMORE ESTATE is only four minutes away, and Asheville’s restaurants, coffee houses, museums, art galleries, and live entertainment are even closer. Shoppers will love the boutiques and the charming, eclectic shops. Many antique stores and warehouses are located less than 10 minutes away – an antique hunter’s paradise with bargains galore. You can walk (15 minutes) to a great organic grocery store. The area is also great for sports enthusiasts. It's a 15-minute walk to one of the best clay tennis courts in the US and a 10-minute drive to the nearest golf course. Great biking - level bike paths near the house (including Biltmore Estate bike paths), and hilly terrain in town and on the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is even a skateboard park within walking distance.

A 7 minute walk brings you to the River Arts District with sidewalk cafes and more than 135 artists’ studios, where some of the best art in America is produced. Other nearby activities include spas, YWCA (10 minute walk), live music & dancing (17 minute walk), yoga (including Bikram Yoga), farmers markets, and University of North Carolina activities – and much, much more. This elegant and luxurious vacation homestay is a place to experience a romantic getaway that you will remember always.

Green Gables is pet friendly and child friendly. Well-behaved dogs will be considered (pet fee applies.) There is a large fenced dog park nearby. The veranda and front yard are fenced and gated for the security of small children and pets. Low-rise beds are available for small children, as well as cribs, high chair, and baby bath. The elegant and luxurious designer fabrics are all washable, pillows and cushions are slip-covered. The sturdy antique furniture has been selected to withstand use. Excellent facilities for day care and summer camp programs are located nearby.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time at Green Gables! Finding accommodation for a 10-month-old & two dogs isn't easy, and this was a perfect spot close to downtown, the Biltmore, and the NC Arboretum. Thanks again!

Nicely updated older home - very comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

Myself and two friends came to Asheville for the Brewgrass festival and a couple of days hiking.

Our main priority was to be within walking distance of Downtown Asheville, this house is almost exactly one mile from downtown - a very do-able walk.

The owner is very hospitable and gracious. She lives upstairs, but don't let that bother you, I am sure we kept her awake more than once laughing. She is a very enjoyable person to chat with as well.

Georgia went out of her way to make sure we basics so we would not be rushed into running to the grocery store - what a wonderful, thoughtful idea!

The house is nicely decorated, has great seating on the front porch and roomy enough for three guys.

Thanks Georgia great stay!

weekend stay

  • 5 of 5

We came to Asheville for the weekend just to check out the city. We were just a few dollar uber ride from almost anywhere downtown and ended up on the FANTASTIC porch for longer than we planned just bc it was amazing! The house is very well furnished and I highly recommend it!

High Expectations were FAR Exceeded!

  • 5 of 5

Wow! I frequently use sites such as this to rent from property owners, and in my roughly 10 years of doing so, never have I come across such a wonderful and thoughtful host!

Georgia has thought of everything you could possibly need, from information about the area, to laundry supplies (what a stress reliever-rather than going home with bundles of laundry, you go home and unpack all of your clean clothes!), fresh baked cookies, wine, coffee, condiments, supplies for cooking, linens galore, and one of our personal favorites - games and toys to entertain the kids.

We came with our 3 kids age 2 months, 2 years, and 4, and Georgia was able to offer us a toddler bed, and a pack-n-play four our baby. There were even nightlights we could use for where the kids slept!

The property is beautifully kept, and is in a nice quiet neighborhood. The house was terrific, we absolutely loved letting the kids play outside in the yard and enjoying breakfast on the wrap around porch.

The location is phenomenal-the main purpose for our visit was to explore some of the breweries Asheville is so well known for, and there are approximately 10 within a 5 minute radius of Green Gables!

My wife and I are already planning an adults-only trip to come back to Asheville whenever we can, and we will not even consider staying anywhere other than this place!

Thanks again Georgia for your hospitality and thoughtfulness!

Relaxing Stay in Beautiful Asheville

  • 5 of 5

Upon searching VRBO properties in Asheville several months ago for our family July 4th weekend, I had a few criteria that were musts...2 bedroom, 2 baths, pet friendly, & near downtown. I narrowed down my search to a couple properties, Green Gables being one of them. I ultimately decided on Green Gables, primarily due to the prompt correspondence from the owner, Georgia. She provided me with much information on the area and the house & amenities. With our daughter meeting us from Nashville, accompanied by her pug, Walter, my husband & I decided this would be the perfect location, with us driving from DE.

We've stayed in VRBOs before, with positive experiences at them, but one never knows until arrival if a property really is the way it's presented online. Upon our arrival in Green Gables, we were all impressed with Georgia's greeting, her helpful suggestions and information in a binder, & her personal "touches"...milk, fresh loaf of bread, a personalized dog treat for Walter, & fresh baked cookies for us! The house itself is exactly as presented online...older, southern-Victorian style home, exuding with charm and beautiful antiques in every room. The huge veranda provided a quiet respite for lounging. The bathrooms were a nice mix of old with new (claw footed tub in one, modern updates in other). The kitchen and bathrooms were both well stocked with supplies. The linens were clean/fresh, and additional covers were provided for our dog. The yard was well maintained, with an array of flowering plants out front & adorning the veranda, as well as greenery lining the stone walkway up the back yard. This property is very close and convenient to the thriving, bustling downtown. My husband & I walked there to browse around a couple times. I will say that the neighborhood is what I'd consider to be a diverse area, with some older, smaller homes mixed inbetween some older larger more stately homes. Overall, we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Green Gables and the hospitality extended by Georgia, the owner. Furthermore, we would recommend this property to anyone wishing to stay in Asheville, close to downtown without all the noise, close to the Blue Ridge pwy & Biltmore, at a comfortable, quaint home filled with southern charm!

Beautiful home, but less than desirable location

  • 3 of 5

As others said, Georgia was easy to deal with and very friendly and personable. The house does look like the photos provided. Unfortunately, I feel that the description of this property is misleading. The title says “Elegant Downtown Asheville Homestay”. This home is within the city limits, but not in downtown. The description later says that downtown is a “14 minute walk”, but in an information book at the house (and in reality) it is a 25 minute walk uphill to downtown and the walk isn't scenic. This is the nicest house in the neighborhood. Quite a few of the houses are in serious disrepair and have junk filled dilapidated front porches. A few homes are abandoned or foreclosed upon. I would not have walked back after dark. We used Uber every time to avoid having to find and pay for parking in town. I was extremely disappointed when we arrived because I was picturing a gorgeous home in a gracious neighborhood that was an easy 15 minute walk past other gorgeous homes into downtown. The reality is that it is an attractive, nicely restored older home in a low to middle income neighborhood of unattractive and/or poorly maintained homes that is a 25 minute uphill walk into downtown on uneven, damaged sidewalks. This property is “close to everything” only if you plan to drive to everything. We love to walk and hike and we didn’t find it walkable to downtown. Other details to note and consider when booking: The master bedroom and bathroom are indeed lovingly restored; however, the master bathroom toilet tips forward away from the wall and creaks when you sit on it (and I am a small person) and the bed in the master bedroom creaks with every movement. The 2nd bedroom is also beautiful with period furniture; however, the bathroom for that room is clear across the house and through the kitchen. The door shown in the eat-in kitchen photo is the door to that bathroom. The kitchen is listed as “Fully Equipped GOURMET KITCHEN w ALL NEW APPLIANCES”. I must have a substantially different definition of “gourmet” and “new”. The refrigerator was covered with tiny rust spots and the motor was so incredibly loud that it sounded like a helicopter taking off. These small cosmetic issues would not have impacted my decision to book. For me, my primary disappointment was the location. Had I realized how far it was from downtown and the type of neighborhood it was in, I probably would have booked elsewhere.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. I'm truly sorry you did not enjoy your stay as much as all the people who previously posted reviews. Green Gables is located in the only neighborhood that is within easy walking distance to three major urban areas of appeal to tourists. It's surrounded by the Downtown District (north), the River Arts District (west,) the South Slope Brewery District (east,) and it is also only a short 1.7 mile drive to the Biltmore Estate (south.) It's a 15-minute walk from Green Gables to Downtown. Asheville is a mountain city – the only flat areas for walking are along the river. For guests who prefer to drive, I provide addresses of all four municipal parking garages – free for the first hour and $1/hour after that. Uber service is fast, convenient and low cost. I appreciate your comments about my “gorgeous home” that, as you say, “does look like the photos provided.” This safe, friendly neighborhood has large old Victorian and Craftsman houses mixed in with smaller homes. Previous guests mention, in their reviews, that they enjoyed walking around the neighborhood and liked its proximity to Downtown and the River Arts District. One guest (June 29, 2015) even entitled her review “Location, Location, Location.” Because of the appealing location, this diverse area is undergoing rapid transformation with prices escalating exponentially. Everything at Green Gables is kept in perfect working order. If an item needs repair or replacement, it is taken care of immediately. Contrary to the things mentioned in this review, the toilet is firmly bolted to the floor and doesn't rock; there is no rust on the refrigerator and it doesn't seem loud; and several guests have said, in reviews, that the beds are very comfortable.

Great place to stay while visiting Asheville!

  • 4 of 5

Green Gables is a great location, convenient to all that Asheville has to offer. We met friends from Ohio and enjoyed sitting on the big front porch, looking at the beautiful flowers. It was a great place to relax and catch up. Very close to the Biltmore. Georgia is a gracious host with lots of suggestions for things to do and places to go. She even gave us alternate driving directions that made finding the house easy. It was very comfortable for 2 couples. We didn't do any cooking but could have with the well equipped kitchen. We would definitely stay here again.
