About the property

Villa, 3 Bedrooms 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Rongotai means 'Hear the Sea' in Maori language. It has been featured on New Zealand's popular show 'Home Front' and on the American Cable network House and Gardens show 'Extreme Houses of the World.' It has appeared in many magazines and was included in the international book, 'Houses of the World.' It is located on a mountaintop facing the sea with a 360 degree panoramic view.

Designed by renown New Zealand Architect Martyn Evans, Rongotai is shaped like a swallow. A complementary shaped garage faces it across a circular driveway. A helipad in the rear and landscaped grounds complete the complex. The house is built of steel and glass with three two-meter skylight domes over the kitchen, master bedroom and a guestroom. The night skies of this secluded area are spectacular. There is a Bose home theater and daybeds for reading or relaxing in the living room. Nautical stairs lead up to the crow's nest for a longer view for spotting yachts, dolphin and orca. There are three bedrooms in the main house each with a stunning view of the ocean and surrounding manuka forest.

The master bedroom has a king-sized bed, a study room with glass desk and broadband hookup, a whole room just for showering with two Philippe Starck fittings; one of which reaches outdoors to the deck and a toilet room with a Japanese Toto Washlet with temperature and pressure controls for rinsing and bidette functions.

The infinity pool gives the impression you are in the sea. There's a jacuzzi on the lower level with shower, sink and an outdoor loo with a view. Rongotai is so isolated, no one can see you here.

The garage has a bathroom, laundry and kitchenette combination and a sleep-out style bedroom. There are hiking paths near the swimming pool and the landscaping is designed completely with native trees and shrubs.

Birdwatchers will delight in the shearwaters, gannets, and other native birds. There are bird, fish guides and star charts with binoculars provided. At night you can hear the New Zealand Morepork (owl family) and sometimes even a kiwi call. A short walk to the beach or a 3 minute drive will take you to Tauranga Bay beach for swimming, walking or a visit to the dotterel sanctuary. There is a kayak school in the area.

About The Owner

We love New Zealand for the pioneering spirit of the people there, and the natural beauty that has been preserved. A favorite hobby is observing wildlife and it's there in abundance in New Zealand.

The Owner purchased this villa in 1999

Why The Owner chose Northland

We looked all over the world for this property. We wanted a house on a mountaintop overlooking a beautiful sea. We searched in Phuket, Thailand; Florida, USA; Ixtapa, Mexico; the Costa del Sol of Spain and found just what we were dreaming of in New Zealand.

What makes this villa unique

We love waking up to the view of the sea. We like to bird watch and dolphin watch from the house or go fishing in the nearby waters and coming home with an abundance of fish to cook up as bouillabaisse, curry fish head (a Singapore dish) or just grilled fish. We take early evening walks along the beach at Tauranga Bay to Butterfly Bay.

Doing my yoga routine out on the deck is great.

RONGOTAI - my favourite place in the world

  • 5 of 5

Rongotai is my favourite spot on the planet. As a cosmopolitan child of the North, I had the luxury of growing up under Northland skies alongside East Coast beaches. Rongotai gives me the opportunity to be once again enchanted by both.

The night skies, in particular, give me that sense of being totally encompassed by the immense expanse of the star studded sky, punctuated by the reliable blink of the Manganui Harbour entrance lighthouse (a sensation akin to night sailing). Another enchanting feature of Rongotai is the scope of panorama which includes views of the sun as it rises above the pastoral landscape - bucolic scenes of cattle on green hills - in the East and sets at dusk over the Manganui harbour entrance.

Apart from the powerful and exquisite scenery I enjoy the minimalist beauty of the house, complete with Phillipe Starke fittings, which unobtrusively complements its surroundings. The sensation on arrival is one of simple surrender to and total immersion in nature at its very best. Alas for me its hard not to wax lyrical as Rongotai exemplifies the environment in all its magnificent splendour – there’s simply no place I’d rather be.
