Philadelphia is a bustling city overflowing with activity, history, and culture. The 'City of Brotherly Love' is a city where many come to learn about the history of America's roots by touring Independence Hall, viewing the Liberty Bell, and visiting the house where Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence. What many visitors forget is that Philadelphia's history was written not just in a house that stood at Seventh and Market streets, but also in the neighborhoods where Philadelphians still live today.
While much of Philadelphia has been modernized and updated, some structures remain the same as they were in the 18th century when John Adams and Thomas Jefferson strolled through the streets of Philadelphia during the American Revolution. One of the things that makes Philadelphia unique is its architecture and real estate. Just one example of unique real estate is the Trinity houses of Philadelphia. Below is some more information on this uniquely Philadelphia structure and how it has survived the test of time.
What is a Trinity house?
A Trinity house is a three-story house with each floor containing one room. The Trinity house is believed to have originated in Philadelphia as early as the year 1720, and nearly 300 years later, Trinity houses are still found across the city of Philadelphia. Sometimes called 'Father, Son, and Holy Ghost' houses or 'Bandbox' houses, Trinity houses are typically quite small with an estimated 400-700 square feet of living space (our home has 700 sqft). Please be aware that folks were smaller back in the 1700's when these homes were built.
*The stairs can be challenging if you are tall or have mobility issues. They are very steep winding.

The Chestnut Lofts ...HomeAway # 179041 (faces rear of building)
The Chestnut Lofts is located is located in Old City which although is steps away from the liberty bell and independence hall also has a very lively night time scene with cafes and restaurants and bars. The pros of this unit is that it is located on the top floor of a 5 story building and oriented facing south toward a parking garage not facing chestnut street so it's much much quieter. Drawbacks being there isn't a waterfront view as you have in the front unit, it doesn't have those huge 20 foot ceilings and the main bedroom is a platform style (the second bedroom is fully enclosed). Please see link here for full listing. https://www.vrbo.com/141917
The Chestnut Lofts ...VRBO # 477685 (faces front of building)
This unit does have a water view, has soaring 20 foot ceilings and gets great sunlight. The drawbacks being it's located on Chestnut St so noise can be an issue especially on a weekend night. Please see link for full listing. https://www.vrbo.com/477685
(Panama St )Cozy Home in Historic Washington Square ...HomeAway # 3165419
This home is located directly next to our other home listing #583380 (Townhouse in Washington Sq) on a quiet cobblestone walking street. Both homes are nearly identical although "Townhouse in Washington Sq" was recently remodeled with a new kitchen and new bathroom. On the upside it has a washer and dryer where the other does not. You can not be more centrally located than this, very easy walk to Rittenhouse Square, Washington Square, 13th and Sansom as well as Old City. The location is hard to beat. Drawback wise these places are small and they have very challenging stairs.

Charming on Historic Street ... VRBO # 619713
My personal favorite of all our properties. This home is located 258 S. Quince street, if you google images of "Quince street Philadelphia" you will see it has been the subject of many a painting and photograph. The street with all it's cute little walking streets and off shoots is very European/ Old World. It's very tough to drive a car down, more of a cobblestone walking street, making it very quiet, almost an oasis in the middle of the busy city. It's still not too far from the historic sites but certainly not as close as The Chestnut Lofts are. It also has a private back patio with table and 4 chairs. Although it is a trinity, its much larger than the ones we have on Panama st. Drawback wise, Id say it has a lot of stairs and could be an issue for a toddler or someone that has any sort of mobility issue. Please see link for full listing. https://www.vrbo.com/619713

We loved this house. The small, cobblestone street transports you back in time. It was lovely to get a glimpse of what houses and neighborhoods were like in early colonial Philadelphia. This house has been thoroughly brought up to date, however, in terms of beds, kitchen, shower, and laundry, A/C & heat. All was in perfect order upon our arrival. Many historic sights are within walking distance, and the neighborhood has lots of nice little shops and restaurants. The perfect place to stay and get a taste of history!
The area of this residence is great for the City Center. We were therein March and it turned very chilly in Philly. The residence is clean, well stocked w/ essentials. Physically, this is just an older building and heat was uneven on main floor to the top floor (heat went right up the stairs....kept main room chilly so top bedroom not an oven).
Stairs are quite a physical challenge. So if you are over 6 foot or bigger than size 10 shoe, these stairs and the clearance to get up and down will be tough. Found it challenging to stay comfortable in residence when so cold outside when on main floor.....but it was our choice to keep it cool so bedrooms not an oven.
House is centrally located. Restaurants are within 2 blocks and all historic sites within 15 min walk. Townhouse confortably accommodated our 2 adults and 2 kids. Kitchen is in the basement and the stairs are, as represented, steep and narrow. Kids loved going up and down them; parents found them a little more challenging. Josh and Miranda are both responsive hosts.
Very comfortable home for four adults. Excellent location for walking tourists; you are just south and west of many attractions but without crowded sidewalks. Many dining and entertainment choices are a few blocks or even steps in all directions. Only a couple blocks to PATCO red line subway or buses. Beds were comfy, linens and towels provided were great. Kitchen is fully equipped; dinners "in" would be easy. Did not try the laundry but efficiency machines are provided. Heat was hot water radiators [good] and cooling was window units [not in season]. This is an older row house with tight stairs, so really tall and non-flexible guests may be less comfortable than we were [I'm about six feet tall and pretty spry]. My 5' 5" daughter joked that she was finally just the right size as she never had to duck! Arriving by car could be tricky if you drive something really wide; make that first turn into the alley slo--o--wly and watch where your doors will open. Spring 2018 24-hr parking at DoubleTree was $30; not much cheaper anywhere nearby. About 7 blocks to a Whole Foods and just five blocks to Capogiro Gelato! We'll be back...
The 'cozy' home is exactly as described, we really enjoyed our stay. My tall young adult sons had some difficulty with the stairs, but both agreed the place was so unique, they loved it. The street is adorable and we had absolutely no issues with street noise as described in other posts. We found the sleeping quiet and very cozy. Once we parked the car we walked to everything including a long walk to franklin institute and back.
good location in center city. very clean and spacious kitchen for a trinity. convenient for getting to rittenhouse/walnut street as well as society hill, old city etc. street much quieter than I expected (I lived in center city at a couple of different locations for nearly 10 years and this is not a loud street.) stairs can be an issue if you have limited mobility. would stay here again
Located in one of Philadelphia's most historical sections we are just a short walk to City Hall, the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall as well as numerous other historical sites and monuments.
