|Minimum Stay||7 nights|
Walk down the stairs through the tropical forest, around the deck to see the fabulous ocean views. This round cabin is very cozy and private - great for honeymoons or a getaway for two.
Captain's Cabin has a wrap-around deck with 180-degree views of St. John,Virgin Gorda, Peter& Norman Islands and Tortola. There is one room upstairs which includes a fully appointed galley kitchen, a dining area, and a living area -- complete with potable water, high speed wireless Internet service, Netflix, a VCR, CD player, radio, and great books, beach chairs and a cooler.
There's a half bath on the main floor, and a private outdoor shower with lots of hot water. Walk downstairs (outdoors) to the air conditioned bedroom with a king-size bed on a platform reminiscent of a boats V berth. We have a full bathroom downstairs with direct access from the bedroom.
Watch the sun rises over the ocean while lying in bed. Listen to the waves.........

The reason I don't take credit cards is it saves us both money. I also want to communicate with each potential guest as opposed to having automated responses! I've been with homeaway for 12 years and am a trusted person by all that know me unlike what some will lead you to believe.
I came to St. John when I was in college and fell madly in love with the island. I told my Mom that after I had kids and they were grown, I was going to move here....and I did just that!
I grew up in New England and was a swim instructor/coach/aquatics director. Obviously love warm water and weather:)
Susan purchased this cabin in 2002
When I first saw Horizons and Captain's I couldn't believe the incredible views. I love hearing the waves crash on the beach below. Every time I went into the houses I'd say how lucky I was to own them.
Being on the east side of the island, the tradewinds are constantly blowing to keep the houses cool and bug free. The privacy, listening to the waves below, peace and quiet....
This is our fourth year on island in November, and Captain's Cabin is hands-down the best place we've ever stayed. The location is simply amazing, 180-degree views of the sea from the fabulous wrap-around porch with a generous breeze. Views from every window. A perfectly appointed cabin for two. My husband and I cooked at the cabin most nights, and the kitchen had everything we needed to make our quasi-foodie dinners. Non-stick pans (thank you for that, eggs are not my friend on regular pans), tongs, whisks, a huge selection of sharp knives, spatulas - you name it. We loved the spice rack, used a few pinches of things, left a few things behind for the next guests. The cabin is in great shape, super at keeping the bugs out. That's huge for me, apparently I'm delicious (left island last year with 89 bites; left island this year with four I got on the hike to Reef Bay). I could really just never say enough about the cabin. My husband wants the floor plans. Sue was super sweet, calling us the evening of our arrival to make sure everything was ship-shape (HA, ship, Captain, I kill me), and was then completely un-intrusive the rest of our stay. Walking distance to the Tourist Trap and Larry's pulled-pork nachos... dangerous. Those nachos, my goodness, I crave them all year. Anyhoo, long story short, we'll never stay anywhere else on island ever again. Captain's Cabin is the best.
We loved everything about the cabin: when we arrived it was spotless, beautifully appointed, with an absolutely gorgeous view. It's on a breezy, beautiful spot high above John's Folly. We're old fans of Maho Bay Camps (now sadly closed) and staying at this cabin reminded us of the old days -- lots of steps, amazing views, an efficient layout, and total relaxation. The view from the decks (all three decks!) is incredible. It's close to Salt Pond Bay, Ram's Head (our favorite hike) and the Lameshur Beaches. Rent a jeep to get there, although flexible and adventurous travelers could manage without a car, as it's right near the VITRAN bus stop for Concordia. One caveat: choose this cabin only if you are agile enough to navigate stairs and climb in and out of the kingsized loft bed downstairs. (The bed was super comfortable, and we felt like we were on a ship.) The property description is absolutely accurate and we had an amazing experience. Thank you!!
First off I have to say that every step (from our first e-mail asking questions about the rental to meeting Sue and spending 8 nights at Captain's Cabin) was a great experience. Sue responds to e-mails quickly and with lots of great information. We had 1 issue while we were there that Sue handled personally and quickly. We were very impressed!
The views from the house are everything all the reviews, photos, and videos lead you to believe. We even saw whale spouts from the top deck. The winds were so amazing we only used the air conditioning in the bedroom 1 night and missed the sound of the waves(not worth it/ we didn't need it). The stairs down to the house are no joke (as pictured and in video) - This is not the cabin for you if you have any issues with stairs. We had no problem carrying all our beach gear up and down the steps each day. All around the cabin are awesome plants, hermit crabs, small frogs and lizards, banannaquills, and hummingbirds. PARADISE!
The cabin is exactly what we expected on first impression when we walked in the door and then went above expectation as we searched all the little cabinets and nooks and crannies Sue has craftily filled with all the small touches, necessities, and extras we would have hoped to find and a few that we didn't realize we would want till we found them. Storage options and well placed hooks everywhere! Great grill and the fridge is full sized and PERFECT! (Wink and smile to Sue) We drank her water all week and it was not only safe -it tasted great. The showers (indoor & out) were always hot! Very private feeling indoor and out. The sun rise = perfect alarm clocK!
We brought our own snorkels but used Sue's fins. Full footed! Beach chairs lived in our car all week and were easy to use and perfect to hike to and from the beaches. Her huge sand-resistant blanket, beach bag, and beach towels were great and kept me from having to use valuable suitcase space!
This was our first visit to St. John so we had no idea where anything was in relation to the house(other then it was coral bay side) when we were booking. We just happened to get very lucky that this cabin is easy to get to (once we were used to the roads that is). There are lots of driveways we wouldn't have ever wanted to try to get up, our driveway was paved the whole way and not too bad an incline or too twisty. There is designated parking for the cabin and it is fairly easy to turn a Jeep around.
We loved staying here!
First off, I want to give the most helpful info to potential renters; For descriptions of the beauty in store for you, just read all the other reviews and multiply the stunning perfection by 100! What you need to know is that the owner deserves all the credit in the world. Sue expertly knows how to prep the cabin AND the cabin-goers for the vacation of a lifetime. The cabin was so stocked and set-up that we could've almost brought nothing with us and still been happy. And this is very important: There were no hidden surprises. Not with money, not with the property, not with the whole experience. This is a honeymooner's/ adventurer's/ privacy seeker's paradise..it is probably not the best place for the faint of heart, the dull, or the lazy tourist who wants a place where you can sit on your butt and have your pampered vacation handed to you on a silk pillow. This is the REAL DEAL! ALL the natural wonders of an island paradise are at your disposal (literally-we couldn't have even dreamed of how true this is!!), but you have to go outside and get it. Read the reviews...see anyone not totally blown away?? If so, that person probably should've stayed somewhere else!! Sue goes out of her way to match the adventure with the adventurer, and makes every effort to make sure her customers are not getting themselves into something ill-suited for their tastes. For those of you who want to hole-up for a week or two (especially honeymooners;)), this place would be perfect, but I challenge you to stay indoors for very long. We woke up our first morning and spent no less than 3 or 4 hours exploring and investigating the plants, creatures and scenery...and that was just between the cabin and the car! Do yourself a favor and get the decent gear you need to explore every nook and cranny of this island: 4WD Jeep, mosquito spray, tight snorkel gear, well-fitted hiking shoes/sandals, GoPro, and your sense of wonder. Leave your phone at home, right next to your expectations...neither one will do you a lick of good here!!!
Everything was better than described, but let me outline the highlights:
Although the bedroom cabin is equipped with AC, the trade winds were so delightful and constant you will never consider using it.
You may discover a friendly lizard, but there were no insects in the house; the place is sealed up tight from the screens to the caulked construction seams.
Water pressure great; always hot water.
Excellent internet connection.
Bathrooms upstairs and downstairs.
The deck and the porch...OMG.
Location ideal for all activities especially access to the national park.
Very, very quiet. The very best nights sleep.
If available, I will be returning.
This was our honeymoon and first trip to St. John, and the Caribbean. Fly into STT, get a taxi to Red Hook, and ferry to Cruz Bay. You may be able to take a shorter taxi to Charlotte Amalie and then a longer ferry to St. John (this would be my preference). You will absolutely have to rent a car to get to this house. The driveway is maybe 100-200 feet of slightly rocky dirt road. You could get here with a 2WD vehicle if you wanted to rent that, but I recommend a 4WD so that you can explore St. John.
The absolute best part of this house was the view. The home has most of the things you'll need, but stop and get some food at Calabash Market on your way there. Owner (Sue) leaves any non-perishables from the previous renters- when we arrived, there were some hot dogs and Corona Light for dinner. There was some bug spray and sun screen, but we used our own too (bring lots of extra strength bug spray!). There were two beach chairs (one only sorta works), beach towels, some snorkeling gear (a MUST have in St. John), basic shampoo/conditioner, and cooking supplies. Rainwater is collected under the home, so you'll hear the pump running often. Sue said it was drinkable but we bought bottled anyway. There is hot water but I didn't even use it- the cold water is room temp and feels pretty good when it’s hot outside. Others complained about the stairs- there is about one flight of stairs down from the parking area, and another down to the bedroom. Some of the old reviews say you have to walk upstairs to get to the bathroom, but there is a bathroom w/shower off the bedroom. People also complained about it being dark on the stairs at night- there are a zillion motion sensing lights all over the house now. They were always coming on and we hated them when trying to stargaze! So we just switched them off and the moonlight was more than enough (for our young eyes at least). The sun rises over the British Virgin Islands every morning and wakes you up early so you won’t waste a minute of vacation time. We missed having A/C in the upstairs. Downstairs has a small one (we only used it on the hot afternoons, nighttime doesn't need it). No A/C is normal in St. John and you'll get used to it, or you can hang out in bed with the A/C on like we did. You can spend most of your time on the balconies here anyway...just beware bugs and sunburn!
Overall this was a great adventure, but between bugs & heat we were ready to be home. I already miss the view!
We are located on the quiet, southeast side of the island known for its great tradewinds and dry weather. Listen to the crickets, tree frogs and waves lapping on the shoreline below.
