Sunset Point Houseboat is a favourite spot for those who seek peaceful relaxation and fishing, swimming, snorkeling, scuba, kayaking, birding with the great feeling of being away from it all. In reality we are far from the madding crowd!
The houseboat has three bedrooms and can comfortably accommodate six persons.
This unique wooden two storey houseboat has two ensuite bedrooms upstairs, a king sized ensuite studio bedroom downstairs, a well equipped kitchen, comfortable lounge, breakfast bar, dining and social area. The houseboat has decks on three sides, providing space for easy lounging, fishing, sunbathing, shade seeking, sunset admiring and midnight star gazing.
The studio bedroom is a large room sitting above high tide, it has a king size bed, with crisp cotton sheets and sliding glass windows overlooking the creek. Through one windows in the studio is a private screened in porch with sturdy wooden adirondack styled chairs, and the other double glass window opens onto the large deck which runs the length of the house and contains loungers, chairs, and a picnic table, this is a great outdoor spot to enjoy the beauty of the view, go fishing, swimming and snorkelling and watch the spectacular sunsets.
Also downstairs in the houseboat is the lounge and kitchen, both of which have the large double glass windows which allow the breeze to cool the house and provide maximum views of the creek. The lounge has a couch and a dining table with chairs. The room opens onto a deck where, in the afternoon, the shade is deep and the breezes constant.
A long breakfast bar separates the lounge from the kitchen / dining area and the easy bar style stools provide a classic spot to work or play with nothing but beauty all around.
The kitchen is well equipped with stove, fridge, water cooler, pots, pans, cutlery and dishes, it has a table with chairs, and a couch for relaxing by the beautiful creekside. The kitchen has a large double glass sliding window and a glass door leading to the deck. Here you will be able to prepare your meals and enjoy the view of the creek at the same time. The fishermen can provide the fresh fish straight from the creek to the plate.
The long deck is the perfect spot to sunbathe, and a great place to securely moor a boat. Here steps lead down into the creek so that you can quickly immerse yourself in the soothing healing tidal waters of Fresh Creek. The old folks of Andros say that bathing in the out going tide is the best remedy for taking away the aches and pains of life and revitalizing the body in the mineral rich out going tide which draws the tiredness from the body. Swimming from the houseboat is refreshing and snorkeling will reveal the critters who inhabit this area. Under the houseboat it is possible to spend a happy time watching the amazing array of reef fishes who live beneath the house.
A spiral staircase curls upstairs where there are two large bedrooms, both with ensuite bathrooms and creekside views. The Master bedroom has a king sized bed and sliding glass doors with a private balcony to sit on while watching out for incoming fish, this vantage view of the creek allows the watcher to help the fisherman cast in the right direction.
The second upstairs bedroom has twin beds, an ensuite bathroom, creekside views and is safe for children.
The houseboat was named Sunset Point due to the spectacular sunsets we get in this part of the world, amazingly every one is different and the view of the sunsetting against the water with a myriad of colours ranging from pinks to oranges to deep blues to rich black silhouetted trees along the coastlines are inspriing to behold.
The house is decorated in the lovely island prints of Androsia a local batik factory, the bedding is 100 % cotton, there is a barbecue grill located on the adjacent land.
Sunset Point Houseboat is the perfect island getaway from it all spot.
Peter and Gabrielle Douglas have been running Sunset Point Houseboat since 2006. 'It is a great little business for the island as it allows us to meet interesting people from all over the globe while providing them with a wonderful vacation.'
Peter operates the 'Outside kitchen', a restaurant which delivers right to the Houseboat. The menu is all about fresh sea food and delicious is one word which describes the qualtiy and taste.
The houseboat used to be located in the Miami River, Florida and came to Andros in 1969. It is reported that the last time the metal swing of the Fresh Creek bridge was opened was when they allowed the houseboat to go through and then the key was lost.
Peter and Gabrielle bought this houseboat in 1989 and lived here for 14 years, raising their family. When the time to move out came around we knew that this was a great opportunity to share this remarkable wooden houseboat with the world, we know what an amazing place this is and how peaceful one can feel listening to the unceasingly gentle sounds of the ocean.
We had an amazing time on the houseboat and on Andros in general! The location of the house is truly unique with incredible views. The sunsets are beautiful and the night sky has millions of stars. I loved waking up with the view over the creek - right from the bed.
All sides of the house have a wooden decks with chairs, so if you want to sit in the sun or in the shade you will always find a place that suits you. There even is an outdoor deck with mosquito nets around it, so you can stay outside at night when insects are most active (but definitely bring spray too!)
We loved swimming, fishing, kayaking etc. right from the house. You can explore Fresh Creek or any of the beautiful beaches in the area, most of the time you will have them all to yourself.
We cooked ourselves almost every day, the fully equipped kitchen really had everything we needed. Grocery stores are close by, a 5-10 min drive by car. Don't expect a great variety of products, the best day is on Friday when the boat with fresh food arrives (so we heard).
Don't expect a lot of luxury: bathrooms are basic but clean (with a slight scent to the water) and there is no AC (but lots of fans to keep you cool) or Wifi. Perfect to disconnect from the outside world and enjoy nature.
Gabrielle was very helpful in answering any question we had and prepared lots of documentation on what to do / where to go.
A big thank you!
My father, uncle, brother and I stayed at Gabrielle and Peter's house boat for three nights of our stay in Andros. The pictures simply do not do justice to how incredible this place is! The bedrooms are very spacious and neatly appointed, the deck that surrounds the house offers great views of Fresh Creek and the incredible diversity of wildlife, and the kitchen and living area are perfect for sharing stories about the day's adventures. I hope I get the chance to return for another stay!
Gabrielle and Peter's Houseboat was the ultimate 11 night getaway: The peace and quiet of living on the water, views from every window showed either Fresh Creek or the Island woods. Waking up every morning opening your eyes to Fresh Creek and depending on the tide - maybe a slight sound of the waves provided the ultimate way to start the day. For us it was fishing off the deck for bonefish, snapper, barracuda or just observing the medley of colorful reef fish and then maybe continue on to kayak for fun or access fishing areas. Biking to town (2.5 miles) to the store was almost a daily event. We did rent a car for a couple of days to explore other Andros highlights.
You'll have everything you need to be comfortable at the extremely clean and nicely furnished houseboat. We cooked ourselves most every day, but also enjoyed Peter's excellent cooking of a lobster dinner with all the trimmings. Fabulous and he even delivered it. We cooked our breakfast, packed a lunch and most likely had some fresh caught snapper for dinner. Or else went to town for some local cuisine. Since we were told to bring some food items that we couldn't live without.....we brought our own spices, coffee, etc. (great advice) From the moment we arrived until we had to leave, we were content whether we just chilled on the Houseboat deck having morning coffee/evening drink or just using it as our home-base while we explored the area. We always had clean/bottle water in the kitchen for drinking - tap water worked for showers/cleaning.
The Houseboat is an outdoor adventure and we would have enjoyed it and the activities even more if the (seasonal)doctor flies hadn't arrived a week before us - but once we learned to apply Avon Skin So Soft and Deet Spray we kept them and the no see-ums under control. However we do understand it depends on the time of the year and most likely what the weather is like.
Gabrielle and Peter are exceptional hosts - they are an extremely respected couple on the Island .... everyone knows them and speaks highly of them. They are dedicated to preserving the natural wonders and the eco systems of the Island.
Our stay at Gabrielle and Peter's Houseboat gave us memories to last a lifetime. Coming from snowy Idaho.... the highlights for us were fishing, kayaking, biking, snorkeling, swimming with dolphins ....but most of all we loved how private and peaceful the Houseboat was. We'll be back!
Sunset Point Houseboat is a superb place to stay in Andros. The house is a very comfortable and fun abode nestled in a breathtaking setting. The owners, Gabrielle and Peter, are gracious and charming people who are always ready to help and generous with information. Fresh Creek is a lovely, sheltered body of water that is perfect for swimming, kayaking, and fishing. We caught delicious snappers for dinner right off of the house deck. Our stay in Andros was meant to be a winter getaway vacation rather than a bonefishing expedition; though we did catch one bonefish wet-wading, and without the aid of a guide. My advice would be to bring any specialty food that you might like to have as the stores around the Fresh Creek area are poorly stocked. The roads are not in very good shape; so I'd recommend renting a sturdy vehicle if possible, and driving gingerly. The Bahamian locals are some of the nicest, friendliest people we have met in our travels. We definitely plan to go back and repeat the experience.
Great place right in the salt water estuary. Like living in an aquarium. Great exploring , beaches, night skies and locals. Owners were very nice. Only issue is tap and shower water which has a distinct sulpher odor. This is a deal breaker if you're a city dweller. The more outdoorsy can make their way past it. Andros is a unique island with many natural treasures and the house boat is a great place to strike out from.
Beautiful, spacious, clean rooms with the most wonderful views. Flocks of ibis flying past, the most amazing fish swimming around the houseboat, bonefish fishing flats in walking distance, comfortable beds. Very friendly, helpful and welcoming owners. We loved the white beaches, the mangroves, the amazing wildlife and nature of the Island. It's a piece of paradise. Would recommend to anyone and happily go again if I have the opportunity.
Andros Island is an amazing place. Truly off the grid. A real genuine place surrounded my nature. The location of the house boat along Fresh Creek was amazing. With the bluest of blue ocean, beaches, and Mangrove tidal flats all around you, nature truly is at your doorstep. Very comfortable rustic accomadations with everything you need. An amazing place!
Andros is a rural island with miles of deserted beaches, blue holes and forest trails to explore. Its the fifth largest island in the Caribbean and the least populated with only 8,000 people living on this unspoilt, untamed and uncluttered island. Our island appeals to the eco tourist, fisherman, adventurer and outdoorsy person.
Known as the 'fly fishing capital of the world', our anglers find excitement and tranquility walking the flats, which are just minutes from the Houseboat or boating into the incredible wilderness of Fresh Creek, The Joulter Cays, the Bights or other famous fishing locations.
Located off the eastern shore of Andros is the third largest barrier reef in the world, just minutes off shore, this reef is considered one of the healthiest in the Caribbean and divers can enjoy a variety of experiences, from 185 feet over the wall to shallow patch reefs.
Birders rave about the endemic and migrant birds they can observe on Andros, piping plovers and migratory northern birds winter here and all year long you'll be able to see the resident shoreline, forest, coppice and mangrove birds. We say just sit for a while and the birds will find you.
Kayakers can explore the 25 miles of shoreline by paddling or drifting up the creek on an in going tide, then spend the day birding, fishing or exploring the blue holes and relaxing on the beaches before catching a ride home with the out going tide.
Star gazers enjoy the wide open vistas, the darkness of the island means there is no man made light to spoil the views and the stars are easily the best show in town.
Just a few minutes walk from the Houseboat there are man made canals which were dug in the 1950's, these canals are great for swimming laps in a safe, refreshing and comfortable location.
Two miles away the art seeker will find the Androsia cottage industry, an island batik factory where beautiful cotton fabric is hand waxed and dyed with the vibrant colors which abound in nature.
Bicycles are included in the rental, its easy to hop on a bike and explore the island, the roads are flat and the beaches and forests are easily accessed.
At the harbour mouth at Andros Town there is a beautiful sandy beach and a Lighthouse which was build it 1892, the brave can still climb to the top!
Andros is the beach combers haven with miles and miles (and miles) of sandy deserted beaches, here you'll share your picnic with the birds and be able to blow away the cobwebs in your mind. Of special note is Somerset Creek beach which is one of those places which inspired the invention of the word 'wow', because it is a wow, so beautiful a beach.
Andros is home to the most blue holes in the world, our blue holes are world famous for their crystal clear fresh water, and some of them are easily accessed for swimming. Visit Captain Bill's Blue Hole, Rainbow, Guardian, Cousteau's or Gubbler to name just a handful of the many found in the Blue Hole National Park.
Hikers can walk for miles through the National Parks, enjoying the old logging roads which criss cross the island, the wild bird song and the native orchids which grow in the wild.
Andros has something for anyone who loves the outdoors.
