About the property

Chateau / Country House, 6 Bedrooms + Sleeping Porch, 5.5 Baths, (Sleeps 16)

Chestnut Oak Farm is a luxurious western-style lodge retreat on a 90 acre horse farm near the base of Old Rag Mountain. The lodge was constructed in 2009 using granite blocks from the farm and huge Virginia pine logs in a western style of rustic elegance. The lodge is surrounded by decks and porches to take in the magnificent view over Hidden Valley, Old Rag Mountain, the farm's twin ponds, and the horses grazing in the fields. The lodge is equipped with a Chef's Kitchen, huge dining room (we have seated sixteen), double-sided fireplace, baby grand piano, screened porch, and covered porch. The main lodge house has three Master Bedrooms, and two other large bedrooms with a shared bath. Downstairs is a walkout game room with foosball, ping pong, bar, and a fire pit/movie pit with 52' screen TV. The outdoor 8 person hot tub is steps away, overlooking the pond.

150 feet down the hill below the pond is the 'Guest' Treehouse. The treehouse is a cedar sided two level cabin-style house which sleeps six, with full bath and kitchen--and an optional fire pole exit for the adventurous. This treetop aerie has to be seen to be believed!

The farm has a small herd of horses, two alpacas (Mike and Ike), and a growing assortment of other farm animals including peacocks. We have hiking trails on the property. A fantastic network of both gravel and paved roads fans out from the farm for incredible short and long distanced cycling routes. Or you can leave the farm to hike the incredible local trails or fish the local streams, or visit some of the local wineries or organic farms. We are 35 miles from Charlottsville, and 82 miles from Washington DC.

Caretakers live onsite and can help out with questions, firewood, directions, and even with provisioning if desired. They are happy to arrange spectacular custom-guided trail rides from a local stable in the surrounding mountains--even overnight camping trips.

About Richard Smith

Our family has cherished this special farm since we bought in 1995. Since building the new house, we have shared it with numerous friends and families who come out to regroup, renew, and get inspired by the natural beauty of the place.

Richard Smith purchased this chateau / country house in 1995

Why Richard Smith chose Madison

Most beautiful place we had ever seen in Virginia. We had been camping, hiking, climbing and biking in this area for years, and fell more in love with it every time we visited. We bought it to create a place for families to bond. Great place for family reunions and get-togethers.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

The area is uniquely rich in character. The edge of the Piedmont and the Blue Ridge is flush with beautiful organic farms, wineries, and incredible cycling and hiking. Great base to visit Charlottsville and Monticello (35 miles), Luray (30 miles), Skyline Drive (18 miles), Sperryville (12 miles), Little Washington (15 miles), Flint Hill (17 miles),Orange (15 miles) and to take advantage of countless small antique shops and artist galleries that are close by.

What a fabulous place...

  • 5 of 5

The pictures do not do justice to this beautiful huge log home with all the amenities. The place was very clean and well kept. Our extended family of twelve, encompassing three generations spent a wonderful week at the farm. As we love to cook and eat well, we especially appreciated the large and well equipped kitchen. It has everything the gourmet needs to produce fabulous meals. The downstairs game room gave a place for the kids to play while adults visited upstairs. There is a very nice baby grand in good condition. With the addition of guitar and hand-percussion we had fun making music in the great room which has excellent acoustics.

Pictures can't do it justice

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful from top to bottom. The views of the mountains are world-class. The lodge is stunning, spacious, and comfortable. The treehouse is really fun and unique (great for kids since it's bunk beds). The host and the caretaker were very accommodating before and during our stay. I really just can't think of enough good things to say. I can't wait to go back and enjoy more sunsets over the mountains from the deck!

Fantastic mega-cabin with amazing views and great amenities

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a quiet place to get away together as a family, and this definitely exceeded our expectations. The cabin is beautiful, extremely well-maintained, and very comfortably set up. My family likes to cook, and the kitchen was well-equipped, nicely stocked, and wonderful to work in. We only ate out once all week, when we were on a day trip. Depending on our mood we ate indoors, on the fully-screened porch, or on the outdoor porch.

During the day we did light hiking in the woods surrounding the property, or just walked through the grassy areas. We played games, talked, or sat on the porch staring quietly at the trees and mountains.

But we all agreed that the best part was the sunsets. Every night was a little different, and each one was beautiful. We spent hours each evening on the front porch watching the sun set over Old Rag, and enjoying the birds, frogs, fireflies, and occasional deer. Afterward we'd sit and talk and be amazed at the number of stars we could see. There was plenty of comfortable sleeping space; with 7 of us there were several unused beds.

Highly recommended for families of all sizes and ages who need to get away to someplace beautiful, quiet, and comfortable.

The ultimate getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Every attention to detail has been addressed in this one of a kind lodge and adjoining tree house!

The location is tucked into a mountainside offering magnificent views from every room. The main lodge is the perfect place for a large gathering, or if you'd rather, plenty of spaces to sneak off by yourself and read a book are available. Every bedroom has been thoughtfully designed including the adjoining bathrooms. The kitchen is wonderfully equipped for the most discerning of cooks. The dining table fits a crowd, and afterwards, a grand piano stands at the ready for the pianist in the group to entertain!

The property is beautifully maintained, and depending on your preference, there are plenty of excellent vineyards a short drive away, and multiple excellent day hikes as well.

The horses were a source of great entertainment, each with their own lovable personalities, but non more endearing than the lone alpaca, Mike, who clearly thinks he is a horse! I would highly recommend to any large group, either a work retreat, family reunion or even a wedding location.

Don't forget to bring your dogs, they'll love it too! We will definitely be returning!

OUR OWN Great Wolf Lodge

  • 5 of 5

The title of the review was what our grand children said when they first got there. This place is so beautiful and such a wonderful place for a large group to get together. Inside and out the owners have taken all steps to share a beautiful luxury location with us renters. From large wrap around porches to screened in relaxation, whole house sound system, game room, ponds to fish in, tree house to sleep in, fire pits to enjoy in the evening and a hot tub looking at the sunset. Could not have been more grand.
