This beautiful and meticulously maintained cottage comfortably sleeps 8 with an updated, classy Maine decor and offers great sunsets across nearby islands. Check our website by clicking on the link below. It is located on a quiet cove and named for the osprey that soar above looking for fish. It is 4 scenic miles from downtown Boothbay Harbor, an adorable Maine village full of great shops, restaurants, bars and ice cream. The cottage is a fresh, quiet Maine getaway minutes from all kinds of fun activities, a dream vacation spot! It's a mile to the amazing Maine Botanical Gardens! Located at the end of a private road on beautiful Sawyers Island (accessible by car! No boat needed!) in Boothbay, Maine, it sits ten feet from the ocean. Recently renovated, the cottage is light and airy and offers lots of privacy. Unlike many Maine cottages it is fully equipped with all of the amenities you would need and want including hi-speed wireless internet and cable. It has a fully equipped eat-in kitchen with ocean views and is thoughtfully furnished with 100% cotton sheets, fresh new towels and new mattresses that are incredibly comfortable (this is so important to us when we travel too!). The grounds are perfect for those lobster cook outs and heated croquet games. This cottage and setting is the exact setting you've been dreaming of and the dock has provided our own children with their private star gazing spot, try it.
The large master bedroom has a queen size bed, high-end reading lights and private sitting area (we all need to escape now and then...). The cottage has a dock and float (with swim ladder) to make kayaking, looking at the seals or picnicking on the islands and water sports an easy pleasure. The dock is accessible by boat at quarter tide or above and flats out for part of the tide cycle. For boaters there is even a mooring included with the cottage! Cozy up infront of the gorgeous wood stove and there is a heating unit as well. The Boothbay Region offers a wide variety of summer activities and diversions and is near great shopping in Freeport and LL Bean. Portland is an easy hour and 15 minute drive from Boothbay. The ferry to Monhegan Island leaves from Boothbay and is a favorite day trip. Camden and Rockport are also easy and fun day trips from the house. It is a destination vacation spot for those in the know looking for a quiet relaxing time.

Area: It's an easy drive to Freeport's town of factory outlets and L. L. Bean. The 250 acre Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is about a mile away. A day trip to Monhegan is a popular trip and there are numerous hiking trails on the Boothbay Region Land Trust properties located all around the house.
Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park is just a side day trip away.
Many art studios are available all along the Maine coast. The famous Farnsworth Gallery in Rockland houses numerous Wyeth family paintings.
I am a recently widowed retiree (but not 'over the hill or so our kids tell me anyway), who grew up in Maine and have fulfilled our dream of retiring home to Maine! This cottage was our family cottage and we raised our children with summers here (this is a photo of myself and our new granddaughter, Norah). I am from Southwest Harbor, on Mount Desert Island and come from a long line of sea captains who resided on Cranberry Island. So I understand the beauty of Maine and know much of what couples and friends are seeking in a vacation. I live in the Boothbay area and am available whenever you need but I am an unobtrusive home owner! I hope you come and enjoy the magic of Osprey Watch!
Charlie Birlem purchased this cottage in 1985
This is a stunning, private and quiet setting on desirable Sawyers Island (accessible by car). It is near the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, the unique Trevett Country Store, yet not far from 'downtown Boothbay Harbor'. There are many opportunities for walking, photography and kayaking from our float. We are surrounded by islands and there are many seals on the ledges just off this setting. You will hear them barking at night.
The views are always interesting and vary during the day as the cottage faces southwest. Evening sunsets can be spectacular and there is a good deal of boat traffic across the head of the cove - both tour boats from the harbor and local fishing boats.
My wife, dog and I vacationed here the week of Labor Day, and are already looking forward to returning again. It truly felt like our home way from home, with every amenity one needs and more. The cottage was thoroughly clean and comfortable, providing the perfect place to sit in the quiet and watch boats go by, or serve as a jumping off point to downtown and the many wonderful parks and trails the area provides. Charlie was great and offered some tips for attractions / things to do / etc. I definitely recommend this cottage to anyone looking to experience Maine in an ideal setting.
This was the second time we had the pleasure to stay at Osprey Watch and it was as good as the first time! The setting is perfect, quiet, peaceful, end of the road, on the water - what more can you ask for. There were even several improvements done since our first visit (new deck area) and the on-demand hot water system works great! Overall it was a great week, Charlie was a great host and we hope to be back again!
Charlie has painstakingly built the perfect Maine vacation cottage with a lot of love and an incredible attention to detail. As others have stated, the location is stunning and we were able to Kayak from the dock to nearby deserted islands. The only issue we had was leaving it behind to go home.
Osprey Watch was the perfect setting for my wife and me to vacation with our daughter, her husband, and our two young grandchildren (ages 3 and 7). Located at the end of a private road and just feet from the edge of a quiet cove, the cottage provided total privacy. Regardless of whether we were outside in the yard or on the dock, relaxing on the porch, or sitting inside the house, we experienced nothing but peace and tranquility. The local waters were ideal for paddling about in our kayak, and the entire family made daily outings to nearby islands in our 17 ft. Bristol Skiff.
Charlie, the owner, greeted us when we arrived, showed us around, and even took time to point out on a map some nearby islands and peninsulas that were perfect for hiking or exploring with children. He also showed us the binder and brochures he had organized for guests, providing additional information on places to go, things to do, local restaurants and, of course, where to find the best ice cream. He graciously offered to let us use one of his moorings nearby for our boat if we wanted (although we never felt the need). Finally, he made it very clear that we should feel free to call him at any time if we had a question or concern. Living nearby, he was out of sight and yet totally available if a problem should arise.
The house provided a welcoming environment from the minute we walked through the door. The downstairs living area, with its many windows, is flooded with natural light throughout, creating a uniquely pleasant environment. Sitting in the living room is every bit as relaxing as sitting in your own home. The four bedrooms were pleasant and very comfortable, and “the nook” above the twin bedroom (my grand childrens’ favorite part of the entire vacation) was an unexpected bonus. The open air porch is beautiful. Although this is an old building, Charlie has obviously gone to great lengths over the years to see that all renovations have been top notch.
I would definitely recommend Osprey Watch as a great place to stay while vacationing in mid-coast Maine. You’re just a short drive from everything and yet away from it all.
This cottage is very welcoming and relaxing. We wanted to be out of town but close enough to drive to restaurants etc. This house sits about 10 mins outside of town. It is very relaxing and quiet place to stay in the cove and the dock is a nice touch! It was so quiet in the evenings with beautiful sunsets. A great place to relax w the entire family. It was very close to many hiking paths. This property is very private and what neighbors we did see were very nice! Charlie stopped in and gave us ideas on kayak rentals and where we could buy our own live lobster to cook. We will definitely be back. This was a VERY nice and relaxing experience.
We loved our stay at Osprey Watch! This was our first cottage rental in Maine so I can't compare it to others. Osprey Watch is a lovely cottage. The tranquility was mesmerizing and immediately pulled us in. We appreciated the thoughtful touches and décor that made us feel at home.
Our favorite things: *watching the tides *the wildlife-chipmunks, seals, osprey, heron, ducks, fox, puffins *kayaking- seeing seals *going for walks
* relaxing on the dock and the beautiful new deck * the stars- so beautiful through the skylights. The location is great and an easy (about an hour) drive north to Camden / Rockland or south to shopping in Freeport. We hope to return in the future!
The Birlems have a binder of local information and were very helpful when we had questions. We rented kayaks for 3 days from Tidal Transit in Boothbay. They delivered and picked them up from the cottage and were very easy to work with. * The outdoor Botanical Gardens nearby is beautiful. We have been there twice. *Edgecomb Pottery on Rt.27/ Boothbay Rd. has some amazing artwork /gifts.
We hope you will enjoy your stay in Maine as much as we did!
