About Mona Rishel-Shissler

My husband (Bryon) and I purchased the James Campbell Farm property in 1990 and spent many years restoring the original (1780's) log house as our home. Subsequently we have refurbished all of the farm buildings. We have planted 100's of trees (mostly native species), created vegetable, herb and flower gardens, replanted the orchard, developed fruit vines - red and black raspberries, and grapes as well as blueberries. In addition to raising much of what we eat we cut firewood on our sustainably managed forests and now offer guests the opportunity to catch and release the fish in the pond -- Come and see how 'green' country life can be!

Mona Rishel-Shissler purchased this cottage in 2009

Why Mona Rishel-Shissler chose Fort Hill

Bryon and I decided to renovate and expand one of the many buildings on James Campbell Farm as a guest house for family and friends. They have enjoyed it so much, we begin to rent it so that others have an opportunity to enjoy 'our little piece of paradise.' Our 2nd season has been very successful with both U.S. and international guests. Many of our guests have said, 'I wish I could live here!' And, BEAUTIFUL is the word most frequently used to describe the property.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage feels like it is 'tucked' into its very own 'special' spot. There are many types of bird feeders that attract a variety of birds. Flowerbeds attract butterflies. There are ducks, great blue heron and kingfisher on the pond. And on any given day you might see woodcock, ruffed grouse, wild turkey and white-tailed deer. If you are lucky you might hear a great horned owl, screech owl, or a coyote. The view from the dining area overlooks the pond, forests and mountains.

Another return visit

  • 5 of 5

I am not sure when one can say a visit to Campbell Farm is an annual event but as this was my fourth in five years, I think I am getting close. And it was another wonderful visit. I cannot imagine a more perfect place to endure three days of cold, damp, awful weather. The cottage was warm and comfortable. I could choose to sit in the dinning area and take in the pond and surrounding woods which even under gloomy skies were soothing, or nook in on the sofa next to the stove with a stack of books oblivious to everything outside and beyond. Along with a well appointed kitchen, which makes cooking enjoyable, I did not want for anything. My visits over the years have convinced me that this truly is a cottage for all seasons.

Love IT! Home away from home!

This was our second stay here. Mona and Bryon are very accommodating. We enjoyed walking the property, fishing both on the property and around the area and the town of Confluence. The birds and chipmunks provided hours of entertainment and peace.

Relaxing, peaceful weekend

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had a wonderful time at the cottage. We were gifted several inches of snow while we stayed which turned an already beautiful landscape into a whole new level. Sitting and looking out over the pond while eating or just reading a book and watching the bids flutter back and forth from the big tree to the feeders was amazing. Great communication from Mona before the visit, couldn't ask for more. Thanks!

Great weekend getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Super nice place to say - just what we were looking for and knew it immediately when we saw the pictures of the cottage on the pond. Being late November we didn't have the best fishing - but we sure did try and at the very end a willing & rather large catfish was landed! Also not a lot going on in the town of Confluence, but still had a nice walk around town. Hiking on the farm property was a pleasure as well. Thank you very much!

Charming and secluded

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful property with a charming cottage. Enjoyed being able to watch the wildlife each morning while enjoying coffee and taking walks throughout the property. The accommodations were very comfortable. The kitchen made it possible to enjoy simple meals. The pellet stove was low maintenance and kept the cottage comfortably warm. It was a great getaway for a long distance couple. Would definitely come again and recommend to others.
