Private rental unit with bath, kitchenette, WiFi, queen beds

Sakara - the characters mean 'cherry blossom', 'aroma', and 'ease/comfort' --

Sakara is unique and original with Japanese decor, private restroom, bath, laundry machine, kitchenette, and high quality western queen sized beds.

Free wireless internet signal, TV, and local phone line standard.

Sakara has a common tatami room next to the lobby overlooking a Zen garden. The first floor tatami lounge has complimentary coffee and green tea for guests.

We want you to get the most out of your trip to Kyoto. With that in mind we have designed this accommodation especially for the foreign traveler in Kyoto.

Traditional styling is important to us, so we have incorporated the Japanese elements we love with an eye to Western comfort.

You will enjoy the feel of a classic historical machiya building; natural wood, plaster, paper, and tatami highlighted with Japanese art and furniture.

The Best of Both Worlds: : *** Sakara offers you the convenience of a hotel or Ryokan with the privacy of a house rental. The kitchen allows you to cook as you like. You can do laundry and take a hot bath.

*** Japanese feel and decor are complimented with highest quality bedding, High ceilings and doorways, and personal touches. Art and antiques blend the modern with the traditional.

*** Sakara is walking distance from the Gion district, shops, and subway. There are many nearby cafes and restaurants.

Sakara is great for families. If you have a larger group please contact us for information about other options as well.

*** The Bamboo Suite is ideal for a family or group of four guests.

*** Please contact us directly about discounts for longer stays or more than one room.

Enjoyable stay, comfortable & welll located

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Bamboo Suite for 4 nights and had a most enjoyable stay. The location was excellent, within walking distance of Gion and the shopping area of Higashimiya. The beds were comfortable, the bathroom rather fun with the big ttub and the compact kitchen was well equipped. It was also good to have a proper table for breakfast. We had dinner on 3 nights at little restaurants recommended to us within walking distance and all of them had very good food. The little cafes and food marts in and around the covered alleyway were also brilliant for picking up snacks and provisions. We would definitely stay here again for our next trip to Kyoto.

Comfrotable self contained setup for small family

  • 5 of 5

My family found staying here very comfortable and functional.

Hikoki suite. Adults sleep on double bed and 2 kids shared double up on the mezzanine.

Clean and comfortable.

Quiet neighbourhood. Nice to have front door out onto the covered walkway away from traffic. Easy walking to the local supplies, the small river, Higashiyama subway station and up into the trails behind Chion-in temple.

Access to rice cooker, washing machine and simple kitchen items worked well for us.

Host was quick and helpful when we had queries, but otherwise left us alone.

Whole experience was very straight forward and functional.

Beautiful stay in Gion

  • 5 of 5

Our family, 2 adults and 2 young kids have just left machiya inn. It is a lovely place to call home in a fantastic location for local walking or as a base for more extensive sightseeing. Major temples are nearby as are some of the most beautiful streets in Kyoto. The home itself is a joy to come back to after a long day. Mile and yuka were also a great help, giving out some really handy sightseeing tips, booking cabs etc. We're sad to leave. Ps try the bathhouse over the road after a long day of walking. Hope to see you again. Dan and Trine from Melbourne.

Comfortable Kyoto Accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We spent 13 nights at Sakara, and were very happy with the accommodation which was quiet. The queen size beds were very comfortable, and the pillows reminded us of our own which made for a good night's sleep. The bathroom had a large bath and a large area to shower, so it was perfect with great hot water. Shampoo, conditioner and shower gel were provided. The bath towels were very thin, which was disappointing, but we were given more towels when we requested them. On the whole the Bamboo Room was spotlessly clean. Clear instructions were given in English on how to operate the various electrical items, as everything was written in Japanese on the items themselves. A list of local recommended restaurants was provided by Cha in reception; she was lovely. There are two good size supermarkets just around the corner from Sakara, and a good size laundromat where you can wash and dry an 8kg load in 1 hour maximum if you can't be bothered using the washer in the apartment. The train station is within close proximity and is under cover via the arcade, from which you can go everywhere in Kyoto. The arcade that Sakara is situated in has many small shops that are interesting, and the people are lovely. Food-type stores abound in the arcade; don't be afraid to try something different. We would highly recommend Sakara.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your helpful review. We are very happy to help guests in whatever way we can to have the best time possible in Kyoto. We use the company 'comfort' for our sheets/towel services, and they service some of the largest and most popular hotels and inns in Kyoto. We are sorry that the towels weren't what you expected; that is something we can look into, and may be able to change or upgrade in the future. Again we thank you very much for your input and observations, and it would be wonderful to host you or any of your family and friends when they come to Japan. Take care and happy traveling, -mgmt.

Perfect Place in Kyoto

  • 5 of 5

Our extended family of five adults and one toddler rented the Hinoki and Bamboo suites for seven nights. Sakara was perfect for us. We had plenty of room to hang out as a family between the two suites and the tea room (we enjoyed the free tea and reading all the travel books!). The laundry/dryer in each suite was an added bonus. We also enjoyed talking to the friendly hotel staff member who checked us in and it was very easy to book our room and communicate with the owner. The location of Sakara is perfect. We loved walking through the arcade every morning and looking at the small shops. The hotel is also within walking distance to several sights, is right next to a subway stop, taxis are easy to flag down, and there are great little restaurants nearby. We grabbed coffee at McDonald's before we headed out most mornings and ate incredibly delicious pancakes at the little cafe directly across the street from the arcade (I can't remember the name, but it's on the same side of the road as McDonald's). The only things that could make this place better are (1) provide larger, more plush bath towels or change the towels more than once a week and (2) provide thinner pillows. Obviously, these are very minor issues and based on personal preferences, but I couldn't use the pillows by the second night (they were extremely fluffy). We would definitely stay at Sakara again and will be sure to tell our friends about it.
