About John Hikade

John and Beth Hikade moved to Blue Hill in the 1970's. They opened the award winning Fire Pond restaurant at that time and stayed in the restaurant business until the early 80's when they started their family. John then turned his focus towards carpentry and became a well known restorer of beautiful the old homes that are so prevalent in the Blue Hill area- their current restaurant is perhaps his greatest masterpiece yet. When their children were older John and Beth decided to start a new restaurant called Arborvine, which in its 13 years has won many awards, and gained the same stellar reputation that the Fire Pond had all throughout New England.

John Hikade purchased this apartment in 1998

Why John Hikade chose Downeast and Acadia

When John and Beth purchased the building next door to the restaurant they knew they had their work cut out for them. With John's amazing carpentry skills and help from his 2 sons, the simple old doctors office next door was turned into a beautiful office space which is home to a local graphic design company (Borealis Press) and a gorgeous luxury apartment located in the center of Historic Blue Hill Village. Renters have found Blue Hill to have everything they are looking for from hiking, to dining and shopping, all right on the amazing Downeast Maine Coast.

What makes this apartment unique

During the summer months you have the convenience of 2 restaurants just across the white fence- The Arborvine with its award winning fine dining, or the more casual Deep Water BrewPub with Craft Beers, outside seating and a Pub style menu. There are fantastic farmer's markets held several times a week in town, plus wonderful local events like street dances with the local Steel Band, plays by the community theater companies, fairs, festivals, and of course the coast of Maine just waiting to be explored.

The cooler months bring a relaxed slower pace to the community. See Acadia national Park on skis, dine and shop. Many of the local shops and restaurants are still open, but you can also stay in and cook and curl up with a good book in front of the fire and watch the snow fly!

Fun and relaxing weekend getaway

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in blue hill for a relaxing weekend getaway and loved the place. A couple highlights: good central location to town and brewpub; well organized recommendations for beaches, hikes, groceries and restaurants all within a 30 minute drive. Comfortable layout for a couple. We would definitely stay here again.

The property was beautiful and clean. Very nicely decorated and all of the amenities were excellent.

We enjoyed staying at John and Beth's property. Every detail was taken care of and Beth was so kind as she greeted us. We loved the property and Mary, was also extremely kind and hospitable towards us. The Arborvine Restaurant was excellent. Their food and Irish Coffee was delicious. The pub food was just ok and the service was good one night and barely there the second night. The Irish Coffee at the Pub was not as good as in the restaurant. We loved the cleanliness of the apartment, we do wish the bathroom had been on the same floor as the bedroom, but, no problem, since the stairs were carpeted. Overall, it was a great experience and we will recommend it to others.

Thank you, Beth and John

Attractive, clean and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

This is a great option for short visits to Blue Hill. It is fresh, clean and comfortable, very thoughtfully appointed and well lit, in a beautiful and convenient setting. My only caution is that visitors should be aware that the (attractive, fresh and functional) bathroom is located at the foot of a fairly steep set of stairs. I did not find this a problem, and the stairs are well lit, but its something you may want to be aware of.

Luxury apartment

  • 4 of 5

It's a new, well furnished and well equipped two floor apartment. Comfortable bed, balcony. Since we spent all day long at Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, we did not use kitchen, except for morning coffee. The restaurant across the yard looked nice, we tried to make a reservation, but it was completely booked.. It's nothing to do in Blue Hill. If you don't mind to spend two hours a day going to Bar Harbor area and back, you will have a nice stay.

Owner's Response: Although Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are a 'must see' while visiting downeast Maine, Blue Hill and the entire East Penobscot Bay Peninsula, as well as Deer Isle, offer extraordinary natural beauty with many hiking trails on conserved land and easy access to the sea. If you like the outdoors...there are endless things to do. And if you like good eating, we offer award winning restaurants, as well as a craft brewery. If you are a fan of good music, Kneisal Hall (a world famous music school) students and faculty perform several times weekly. A steel drum band plays free at the town park on most Mondays, and there is often a live performance by a local play group on weekends. So yes, there is so much to do in the Blue Hill region, and you won't have to endure the massive crowds and the horrendous traffic in ANP, and the sidewalk congestion that occurs in Bar Harbor, especially when the cruise ships disgorge several hundred passengers at a time to make their way amongst the T-shirt and trinket shops. And one last caveat; the MDI road to Bar Harbor is under major reconstruction for the next two years and that makes the trip from Blue Hill to Bar Harbor into a one hour trip each way, rather than a 35 minute trip normally.

With around two thousand residents, this charming small town is home to many restaurants, galleries, shops, and preservation hiking trails. Whether you are looking to kayak, bike, hike, swim, explore, or just sit on the beach and relax, you are sure to love your time in Blue Hill. In the summer enjoy swimming, hiking, boating, and of course plenty of lobster and blue berry pie. Fall brings beautiful foliage, the Blue Hill Fair, and the Food, Wine & Foliage Festival. Winter is not to be missed with beautiful ski and snow shoe trails, ice skating, and a romantic dinner by the fireplace at Arborvine. Spring arrives with beautiful flowering apple trees and native lupines, first of the year greens and strawberries from many local organic farms, and increasingly warmer and sunnier days. Whatever the season Blue Hill is sure to fulfill your vacation desires year round.
