Can't wait to return!

Want a place to relax? A place where you can hear the birds sing, watch the rabbits feeding on the grass outside the window, drink your morning coffee on the portal as the breeze winds its way through the orchard and the aspens. A place full of books and magazines, of large comfortable sofas and chairs. Yet so very close to all that Santa Fe and northern New Mexico offers. During our week's stay, my wife and I took day trips to Madrid and the San Marcos Café, to the plaza and farmers' market in Santa Fe, to the small towns and art colonies on the high road to Taos, and to the train ride in Chama. On alternating days we simply stayed in the guesthouse, enjoying the tranquility.

The owner is accommodating, informative, and welcoming. Before we arrived she gave us all the information we needed: how to get to the compound and where to stop for groceries. She personally met us when we arrived to show us the property and reminded us to contact her if we needed anything. One afternoon after we returned from a day trip, she invited us over for a glass of wine and graciously showed us her charming home, the oldest one in the compound.

It is such a beautiful setting, seemingly away from everything, but close to grocery stores, restaurants and coffee shops, drug stores and boutiques. When we left after our week's stay, we immediately wished we had reserved Nxai's Place for a month. We intend to return soon.

Extended stay

  • 5 of 5

“You have fallen into a box of chocolates”, remarked a friend from Santa Fe who joined us for dinner one night at Nxai’s Place. After a wonderful seasonal experience there, we had been lucky enough to arrange for an extended stay. Indeed, from the the high ceiling main room chock full of books, to the serene adobe wall bedroom, to the the calming portal rimmed with buzzing hummingbirds, Nxai’s Place delivers a memorably sweet experience. And you may find yourself on that portal one morning, with coffee, when the sound of a train stopping at the Lamy Station awakens all your romantic buttons. Santa Fe? We forgot we were even nearby when a stay here, and high desert hiking trails five minutes away, offer up such a unique way to experience northern New Mexico. My comment on the host Zunkel/Romanelli family, past how their interesting lives may contribute to your stay, is simply to say that their family is now my family. This is the essence of a home away.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your lovely words about Nxai's Place. You have two new grandchildren who repeatedly ask for you and Bella goes to the portal every morning looking for you. We are very happy that you chose to remain in the area and we can now visit you...You are also part of our family.

Back Again!

  • 5 of 5

I unexpectedly found myself returning to Santa Fe on business and after looking at some of the hotels in town I decided that I'd really rather stay at this wonderful house out in Lamy. I had stayed here once before, 8 months earlier, and it was such a perfect location - I absolutely fell in love with it! It's quiet, it's remote, yet it's only a quick 10-15 minute drive right into the heart of Santa Fe. And nearby Eldorado really has almost everything you'd need - a coffee shop, supermarket, even a quaint cafe! For writers, or for anyone who just wants a little space at the end of the day - this is the absolute perfect place to be! And why sit in your cramped hotel space when you can enjoy the luxury of an entire house? I love the well-stocked library. It's really the perfect place in a perfect location! I can't recommend it highly enough.

Lamy revisited

  • 5 of 5

Three weeks in Lamy in 2010 were enough to knock off my feet for several months. That’s how long it took, to get 'back on the ground again, once we were back in Amsterdam. And even after four years, there still was this yearning to go back to Lamy, so we (my wife and I) decided to act upon that and returned to Lamy to see if this truly is the magical spot on the Northern hemisphere I hold it for. We drove from Chicago to Lamy. Seeing the sign ‘Welcome to New Mexico, the Land of Enchantment’ made my heart jump with joy. The arrival at Lamy was remarkable. It was quiet. As quiet as Lamy can be during 23 hours a day. But when we entered the guesthouse it was like we left it only the other day. It was like the house welcomed us, and not only the house, we had a heartwarming reunion with the extended Zunkel family and friends. It truly felt like coming ‘home’ again. We spend two weeks in Lamy. What can I say? The house is wonderful in every aspect. We enjoyed every minute there, especially when we build a fire (temperatures dropped suddenly) and had long nights of reading at the fireplace; Lamy is the charming sublime nothingness itself; The Romanelli-Zunkel family and Silvie demonstrated great hostmanship and made us feel like being part of the family. Often, going back to a place that made an impression, is a bit disappointing. Following our hearts and revisiting Lamy turned out to be the best thing we could have done. After this second ‘Lamy experience’ we can truly say that Lamy is a unique and magical spot on this earth. So is the house. So are the people.

Beautiful, Quiet Writer's Retreat

  • 5 of 5

I decided to go to Lamy after reading all of the other 5 star reviews and I was not disappointed. It was everything I'd hoped it would be and more. The scenery was beautiful, Bella the dog was great company, and I thoroughly enjoyed just sitting on the porch listening to the wind chimes and watching the hummingbirds. Eldorado is nearby with all the conveniences one might need and Santa Fe is a very easy drive and a beautiful city to wander around in. The accommodations were great and I particularly enjoyed the diversity of the library of books that filled the house. I spent two beautiful weeks there and loved every moment of it. It is also a great jumping-off point for a lot of day trips with easy access via nearby highways. All in all, a 5+ star place. And I do hope that I find my way back there again one day!

Couldn't be better

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at "Nxai's Place" for a month and loved it. The guesthouse is very spacious, comfortable, and tastefully decorated. It even has a great selection of books and magazines, and it was great luxuriating at "home". The grounds are beautifully landscaped, and you can enjoy listening to a wind chime and the rustling leaves of birch trees, admire hummingbirds at work, and play with the family's friendly German shepherd. The property owner and extended family in a nearby house were delightful and responsive when needed, but unintrusive and respectful of guests' privacy. Lamy is a very quiet, safe community of only 125 residents, and you can take leisurely walks in the neighborhood and up the mesa behind the house. The only commercial places in town are the Amtrak Station and a Railroad Museum across the street which deserves a visit. Eldorado is a 10-minute drive away. It has a sizable supermarket, several restaurants, a small fitness center, an independent coffee shop, and other boutiques; there's even a small farmer's market held there every other week. Santa Fe is a 20-minute drive away, and it has many cultural offerings in the summer--music galore (opera, chamber music, choral), several independent film theaters, folk arts, history and art museums, etc. Sunsets and cloud formations in the area can be spectacular and dramatic. There are great places to hike nearby. It was hard for us to leave when our month-long stay was up in early August.
