Great location with an absolutely fantastic pier jutting into the York River

  • 2 of 5

The pier, canoe and children's play area are well above par - very nice. But bring a lot of OFF - the no-see-ems are hungry in the evening and bite! Overall, house is in good shape structurally, but it needs attention to the small stuff. Kitchen pans are awful - we love to cook in. Bed linens old and cheap, and did not feel fresh. The unnecessary electric blanket and bedcover are out of the 60s, and well worn, and look like it. Nice A/C - hi tech thermostats etc. Master bath shower/tub was a challenge to use in many ways and plumbing controls require engineering knowledge. Very noisy hot water heater - when running in the night it sounds like a 747 getting ready for take-off. Hard to get fresh air as most windows do not have screens. Fire alarm woke us up in the middle of the night, but it turns out it was beeping due to low batteries. Imagine trying to find a ladder to reach it! The place has its redeeming qualities, but is a bit overpriced for what you get.

Owner's Response: There have been a few changes due to your suggestions. There are now new pots and pans!! There are batteries in the shelving unit as a back up for any future late night annoyances. Two NEW fire alarms have been installed with a 10 year warranty. There was a step-stool in the master closet to use at any time. We suggest that everyone uses the screen porch for all the outdoor enjoyment and fresh air. It's a great space, very convenient and enjoyable. The bedspreads, comforters & quilts are in keeping with the period of the home----with some antiques scattered throughout the home as well. The electric blankets are on the beds for guests' comfort---as it can get cool in VA in April and even into May. They can always be removed if a guest doesn't prefer them. As far as the bugs---it is in a semi-rural area and has nearly 2 acres of private yard. And with the beachfront, water and all---everyone is always advised to bring their preferred bug repellent and sun screen of choice. Bug sprays are also sprayed along the bushes, etc., of the yard. We are glad you did get to come and enjoy some time at the Beach House on the 'RIVAH'.

Lots to like, with one suggestion

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay here and would return if we make our way back to the Yorktown/Williamsburg area again. The setting is peaceful and the river views are wonderful, whether you take them in from the dock, the upstairs balcony or the screened back porch. The yard is nice and big -- plenty of room for kids to run. There's a canoe and an outdoor play set for little ones. Joy and David were easy to work with, and the house already had many necessities when we arrived -- paper towels, coffee filters, condiments, etc. Bring bottled water, and your EZ-pass or spare change -- the bridge crossing the York River will cost you a couple of dollars when driving back and forth from the house to Williamsburg & Yorktown Beach. One of the earlier reviewers noted that the pots in the kitchen weren't in the best shape, with the non-stick material peeling off some of them. That was still true when we were there, which made cooking a bit of a challenge. So if you're planning lots of kitchen time, bring your favorite pots from home, or see if you can persuade the owners for a small upgrade of what's in the house.

Owner's Response: GOOD news! There are new pots and pans at the home to use and enjoy. Hopefully, everyone that stays can use them well----but not take them outside or to the grill. Thanks for coming. Please come again!

Nice place, well appointed.

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay. We did run into some issues with the well (water) were addressed within a day or so for that reason I'd give 3.5 to 4 stars. Otherwise, great location for our needs....between Glouchester and Yorktown.

Owner's Response: We were sorry about the well situation. Upon receiving the call---we had someone come as soon as they could arrive---it was on a Sunday--so this was no easy matter, for sure. The plumber came and spent hours working on it and performed a procedure where the guests would still have water for their convenience throughout their stay. This was untimely & unfortunate---but was handled as quickly as possibly. We are glad you got to come and hope you can come visit again. (Other guests have arrived---& thankfully, NO well problems.) Thank you for coming to the Beach House on the 'RIVAH'.

Quiet Reflections

  • 4 of 5

Such a nice week we spent at this home. We saw dolphins, rays, osprey and crabs. Convenient to Williamsburg/Yorktown area. Sitting on the dock taking in the fresh air was very refreshing. Getting a in person tour of the home by the owner was a nice touch.

Relaxation on the River

  • 5 of 5

Joy and David were wonderful to work with prior to our arrival and then at the time of our arrival. We have stayed in other homes through Home Away/VRBO and this was the only time an owner greeted us at our arrival and personally walked us through the property. We had a big group (7 of us) but everyone had enough space in the home on the river. Our smaller children enjoyed using the beach shovels and buckets provided while the older kids enjoyed the corn hole game. The property is very conveniently located to Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens which we visited several times during our stay. We would highly recommend staying here.

Lovely waterfront cottage!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at this lovely home. Well-appropriated kitchen. We spent much of our time on the pier, which is apparently undergoing renovation, but was perfectly lovely for our needs. The kids swam off the pier. Life jackets available for the younger swimmers.

We also made good use of the canoe and paddled out to see the osprey nests nearby.

I'm told there are frequent dolphin sightings at the end of the pier, but we did not have the good fortune to see any. Perhaps to too early in the season?

The home is quaint with quirks that come with an older home, like squeaks in the floorboards and Windows that stick a bit, but it all adds to it's appeal. Very well kept and quite clean!

Owners kind and helpful
