If the country life is something that calls you, this recently renovated casita on our rural property just north of Santa Fe is the place for you! It has all of the amenities to make your visit comfortable...WiFi, DirecTV, dishwasher, stove/oven, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, coffee maker, coffee grinder, blender, laundry area with washer and dryer, and wood-burning stove/supply of firewood. Expansive views, the Rio Grande, Nambe Falls...this is horse country, and the area has maintained its historic, Northern NM roots.

The views of the Sangre de Christo mountains outside your bedroom window are breathtaking, and the magnificent sunsets, seen from the kitchen window or front door, provide you with a 'light show' nearly every evening. The quaint and lovely winery just down the road from us (Estrella del Norte) offers the best of Northern NM wines, and literally and figuratively gives you a flavor of the countryside.

Our roosters will let you know that 'morning has broken', and there will be a supply of 'horse candy' at the corral so that you can 'make friends' with our burros, Miss Bea and Miss Daisy, if you want to!! You can interact with our animals (the goats and chickens are friendly, too!) or stay toward the front of the property and just enjoy their sounds and energy...which ever feels right to you!

We are near several small towns (Pojoaque, Espanola, Chimayo), local places of interest (Santa Fe Opera, Sanctuario de Chimayo, Nambe Falls), several museums/historical areas, and numerous Resort-Casinos (Buffalo Thunder Golf Resort & Casino and The Santa Claran are two of our favorites), so there is shopping, sight-seeing and entertainment within minutes of our place. There are several wonderful restaurants within 15 minutes of our place, and Leonardo's aunt owns a world-famous, authentic Northern NM restaurant called Rancho de Chimayo about 25 minutes away. So...you can choose a rural, quiet type of experience, or enjoy night-life, athletic & cultural activities. dining out and shopping...or do what we do, and enjoy the best of both worlds!

Come enjoy the art, culture, scenery, and people of Northern New Mexico...truly unique and unforgettable.

Santa Fe in 'the national spotlight': CBS Sunday Morning recently featured a segment on Santa Fe that highlights our unique design culture. The segment was titled 'By Design: Santa Fe Style'. The report mentions Canyon Road, Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Maria Benitez Institute for Spanish Arts, Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, Santa Fe Opera, Santa Fe Plaza, Santa Fe Railyard, El Zaguan (James L. Johnson House) and the Historic Santa Fe Foundation, La Casa Sena Restaurant and La Fonda Santa Fe Hotel. Taos comes in for mention also, particularly Taos Pueblo as the inspiration for Santa Fe Style.

About Audre Gutierrez

I am a medicinal aromatherapist, and my practice, Shining Sun Aromatherapy, is located on the other side of the same building which houses the casita. My husband, Leonardo, is the craftsman behind the beautiful work in the apartment, and he does everything with skill, flair and heart. I am the decorator of the pair! As he always says, he can build the house, but I make it a home. We are a great team. We love our animals, and keeping things neat around the property, but not manicured. We want to maintain the natural feel of the place. Beginning in the spring of 2011, we plan to plant medicinal plants on our 1.5 irrigated acres of land, and begin to bring Shining Sun Farm into fruition!

Audre Gutierrez purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Audre Gutierrez chose New Mexico

The casita is located across from our house, the main house on the property. I was drawn to the rural nature of this area, and the fact that the old Northern NM culture is still alive and well here. My husband grew up in El Rancho, just up the road from Nambe, and his family lives throughout the area...we had the guest house/studio on the property, and renovated part of it to be the home of Shining Sun Aromatherapy, and the back portion to be a vacation rental property because of the strong pull this area has to people drawn by the beauty of the Southwest, the unique art and culture of this area, and the local farming culture that still thrives in this area...every town has farmers markets, including the fabulous one in Santa Fe.

What makes this apartment unique

For people who love rural areas and farm animals, and miss this in their lives, this is a chance to be on a beautiful property with breathtaking views, up close and personal to these wonderful companions. You are centrally located to Santa Fe, Taos, and Nambe Falls...lots to see and do, but, nestled in the cottonwoods, it all seems a million miles away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Many thanks for making us feel so welcome! We were able to see most or all of the sights -- Taos, Abiquiu, Bandelier, Los Alamos, White Rock, and even 2 wineries and 2 casinos! Fabulous Thanksgiving dinner at Buffalo Thunder. We loved the casita, with all of its furnishing & amenities, including the animal life. Santa Fe is a great place to be a tourist!

Wonderful location, impeccable rooms, everything you need (washing machine, dryer, dish washer, A/C) and lots of chances to interact with the animals. Owners very friendly and welcoming. Would stay there again 100%.

Unique and special

  • 5 of 5

Staying in this beautiful casita was a unique and special experience my husband and I will always treasure. The casita is filled with charm, character and personality! When you walk in it seems to welcome and embrace you and all the special touches throughout enhance that feeling even more. This is a reflection of the owners, Audre and Leonardo, who are indeed very special people. They are wonderful hosts and you leave feeling that you have been very fortunate to have made two incredible friends. They provided you with as much privacy as you want, but are extremely welcoming, friendly, very helpful and try to make your stay not just a visit, but a wonderful memory! They have a wonderful farm family they have rescued and it is quite awesome to look out and see the burros, goats, chickens, ducks, geese, dog and cat! How wonderful to walk out the door and hear the burros bray a welcome and an invitation to visit and hopefully bring them a treat! They definitely add an extra special dimension! You almost don't want to leave the casita, but as you venture into the area you discover it also has much to offer. Great hiking at Bandelier, horseback riding at Bishop Stables, visiting the Plaza as well as the Railyard (best restaurant in this area is La Choza - wonderful mother/daughter owners, outstanding food @ reasonable prices, great staff). We are really looking forward to returning to this wonderful casita for a longer time period!

A place to relax

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our six week stay. If you want a place to relax in the country but still be close to all the Santa Fe area has to offer, this is a great place to stay. The accommodation was exactly as described and all appliances, wifi, TV etc. were in good working condition. We stayed from August 1 until mid- September when it is quite hot and the air conditioner and fan in the bedroom kept the inside cool and comfortable. Owners Audre and Leonardo were wonderful hosts and always were eager to offer information about the area. In addition they were very responsive to our needs. They have fostered or rescued several of the various animals kept on the property. Becoming acquainted with the burros, goats, ducks, chickens, geese, cat and dog added to our enjoyment and the unique experience this place provides.

Very clean and comfortable. Beautiful setting with mountains to the east and to the west. Very easy access to the main road and many attractions less than an hour away in all directions. Our favorite hike was Nambe Falls.

Beautiful setting and convenient too!

  • 5 of 5

The Shining Sun Casita was perfect for our little "get away" from the world. The accommodations were comfortable, clean and very nicely decorated to make us feel at home. The location with it's mature Cottonwoods and country setting made it very easy to relax under the trees and watch the birds and occasional jackrabbit in comfort. The setting was quiet and yet the proximity to main roads made it the perfect "base of Operations" for our day trips to nearby attractions. We definitely recommend this lovely Casita and look forward to maybe coming again in the near future! Maggie Miceli

Owner's Response: Thank you so much, Maggie! So sorry we missed meeting you, and do hope to have that opportunity in the future. We love the "so near and yet so far" flavor of our property...close enough to the wonderful local venues to access them easily, but basically in our own little world at home. We appreciated having you as a guest, and, again, thank you for staying at Shining Sun Casita. Warm regards, Audre & Leonardo
