About the property

This charming lakefront cottage is located on three hundred feet of private beach. The gradual sandy beach is excellent for swimming and the sunsets from the south shore of Lake Michigan are incredible.

Porter Beach is a small beach community located on the borders of the Indiana Dunes State Park and the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and just one hour from downtown Chicago. The beautiful beach stretches in either direction for miles and within minutes you can get to wonderful nature trails, excellent restaurants, quaint shops and many interesting cultural attractions.

The trails vary in length and difficulty but are all wonderful for both hiking and cross country skiing. There are also some excellent sledding hills nearby. Other close by sights include historic Chelberg Farm, Westchester Township History Museum, Zao Island Amusement Park, Taltree Arboretum, Calumet Bike Trail, Imagination Glen with a BMX race track and a 10 mile Outback Mountain Bike Trail and Broken Wagon Bison Farm and many more wonderful places to explore and activities to delight.

Great location right on the beach. However. Not friendly for families with kids. Teenagers used kayaks provided by rental. Very shortly after getting out of the water was visited by Susan who very nicely complained that the boys had tipped not the kayaks overto empty water. I hadn't really had a chance to go down and check on this as we are talking about 17-year-olds who had been out of the water five or 10 minutes but I was OK with her asking that they take better care of the equipment. Shortly following her sister Erica came down and accused us of using house towels on the beach which we had not even though we had never been told we could not. She then reprimanded me for hanging towels out to dry on the porch railing as she said this would leave rust stains and she was not very nice about this. The very next day she came over and explain to me that she was very agitated that she had found a piece of wooden roofing shingle near one of the fire pits and felt that the teenagers have used her private property for a fire. Very confrontational. Walks around drinking on the property. So I would say it's OK if you like having a crazy neighbor that is also one of the owners. very stressful experience overall and we left early.

Owner's Response: Amy, I appreciate you leaving such a colorful and imaginative review. I’m glad you (and all the additional guests you didn’t mention when making the reservation) enjoyed the location. As you can see by our ratings, we offer a 5 star accommodation to most of our guests. It seems a 5 star accommodation may not fit your needs. Our property is nice and clean and we do have certain values that we bring to it and vandalism is not accepted here. I’m delighted you made use of the kayaks and fire pit however, we are adamant that these amenities remain safe and intact for our other guests. I apologize for any inconvenience caused by asking you to be responsible for the actions of your teenage sons and their friends. Once again, glad you enjoyed the location. Have a wonderful rest of your summer.

Great place to stay!

The property was a great place to start and end our days! It's comfortable, spacious, conveniently located, and very well equipped with not a single amenity overlooked. We'd definitely stay here again. Thanks

Nice place on the beach

  • 4 of 5

Everything was great, especially the kayaks and other beach equipment. The twin beds in front room are not good, especially for someone with a bad back. Also, those stairs are killer!

Stunning Birdseye Views!

  • 5 of 5

Even though the weather was at times stormy, breezy, rainy, sunny, bracing, we thoroughly enjoyed our 3 night stay at the Charming Lake Front Cottage nestled in the Indiana Dunes. Being on the 2nd story we had a great view of Lake Michigan's mood, and sometimes could see a faint outline of the Chicago skyline. We enjoyed watching boats and gulls sail past our window. Please not that in order to get the best views, you need to be standing or sitting on a bar stool as the windows are a bit high. We placed the daybed mattress onto the couch and that enabled us to see more while resting on the couch. :) The cottage was clean, neat, had everything we needed plus a nice kitchen area and little porch for enjoying outside when it wasn't raining. If you have trouble walking up/down stairs and hills, this is not the place for you. We are in our mid-sixties and it was a little bit of hike, especially with luggage. There may be a little over 60 stair steps involved, but it is well worth the effort. We walked the beach and saw the Dunes, and also walked the surrounding neighborhoods. We really enjoyed the 3 dinners we had out: Burgers at Octave, ribs at Wagner's and amazing Italian at Lucretia's. Our host, Susan, was very nice and responsive when making arrangements and upon our arrival, even helping us carry our first load into the cottage! We will definitely be back, hopefully when the weather is a bit better! We already miss the sound of the waves ever present during the day and lulling us to sleep at night!

Perfect place to get away

  • 5 of 5

We loved this little cottage on the beach! It was everything we thought it would be and more. Although it was a little chilly during our stay, that didn't stop us from enjoying the view, the sand, and dipping our toes in the cold water of Lake Michigan.

The cottage was SUPER clean and smelled really good. I'm weird about smells, so that was a big plus for me. Even the bath towels smelled super good! Nothing like that bleach smell you get on hotel bath towels. Check in was super easy and quick. Check out was even easier. Super affordable rates, convenient location, awesome all around! We will be back!

Cozy, comfortable and quiet get away

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely place to stay! The house was very clean and equipped with everything I could possibly need. It was comfortable and safe and truly felt like a home away from home. The owner was so incredibly accommodating as my flight was delayed, rerouted and all botched up.

I really needed a place to relax and get away for a few days and this beachfront cottage was exactly what I was looking for! I stayed in and cooked for myself in the ample kitchen, but there were plenty of places to eat in town.

I was lulled to sleep each night to the sound of crashing waves and slept like a baby. The view was so beautiful. I could just look out over the water and get lost in the sunrises and sunsets for hours.... even on cloudy, rainy days! The whole beach was clean and I could walk as far as I wanted and was able to "recharge" and not have to think or worry about work, unless I wanted to.

I definitely will try to make another trip and stay again.

I highly recommend this beach front cottage to anyone who wants to get away from it all or to bring the kids to play in the sun and the sand.
