About Joelyn Hilton

We love being able to unwind in the quiet and spaciousness of our desert surroundings. We moved into our house about thirteen years ago and built the separate studio on our one-acre property a few years later.

The studio includes a pottery, where Chip, the owner, can be found most days, making tiles, cups, bowls and other cool stuff.

Joelyn Hilton purchased this cottage in 2010

Why Joelyn Hilton chose Mesa

There are two reasons we moved to East Mesa - one, to build a ceramic art studio, and two, to be close to hiking and mountain biking. We were able to convert part of the ceramic art studio into the vacation rental, with it’s own separate entrance.

What makes this cottage unique

We’re close to nature, but also within a few minutes to food shopping, coffee shops, convenience stores, and gas. Close freeway access takes you to malls, movie theatres, hospitals, public transportation, and the airport.

Free Culture Passes available at the local library: first come/first served. Let us know ahead of time and we'll see if we can get them!

This is is a one acre property that includes our own house, as well as the studio, a separate building. The studio is the vacation rental, and a pottery is on the other side of the studio. Saguaro lake is a 20 minute drive. They have boat rentals available as well as fishing supplies. Walk to Usery Mountain from the studio. We have hiking sticks made from saguaro ribs that you can use, as well as water bottles and fanny packs. If Chip, the owner, is throwing pottery during your stay, you can watch or maybe even join him! You can see some of his work on his website at

Very Cozy and clean. Great location and the owners could not have been any better or nicer.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this little casita. It was cozy and clean. The location is great to get on to 202 or 60, easy to get around. My daughter was with me alittle bit of my vacation and then my husband it's a nice place for 2 and is well stocked with cooking supplies and a grill outside and patio on top. Chip and Joelyn could not be any nicer and helpful if you have questions. But give you your privacy. It's so peaceful and quiet lots of nature. Close to hiking trails, Usery National Park and others.Hear coyotes, donkey, roosters.Beautiful sunsets and sunrises!!! I'd definitely stay there again.

Cozy Studio with great views and great location for hiking!

  • 5 of 5

We have stayed at this studio rental six times and love it! You can see the Superstition Mountains from the window (even from the bed!) and you are surrounded by beautiful desert. It's close to hiking in the Superstition Mountain area as well as the Goldfield Mountains. Usery Mountain Park is nearby too. The rental is in a quiet neighborhood. Shopping and restaurants are close by. The studio is small and has a kitchenette that includes a small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, silverware, pots, pans, glassware, and a hot plate. We usually stay 8 nights, but don't cook. We do mostly take-out or go to restaurants. The roof deck is wonderful! We'll come back from a hike and go up there for a drink and to eat our take-out dinner. The views are amazing. Sunrise and sunset are gorgeous.

Because the studio is small and just has a kitchenette, I wouldn't recommend it for a long term stay, but it is a wonderful place to stay and Joelyn and Chip are amazing hosts. We've become friends with them and love seeing them every year. Chip has a studio attached to the rental and will take you on a tour of his pottery if you ask!

We loved everything about staying in this clean, cozy casita with amazing views!! Rooftop patio for amazing sunrises and sunsets, very quiet, great location for hiking yet close to town. Cozy Studio for Everything you may want to see or do

  • 5 of 5

Wow - 2nd time we have stayed here. We are still amazed at all the little extras that mean so much to visitors staying at their studio. Two wonderful people Chip and Joelyn - so easy to visit with and so accommodating. The studio is decorated to perfection - not one thing missing. Great area to stay - lots to do and not far to travel to see different things. Like the golf courses, hiking, Goldfield Ghost town and Mine Tour, Barleen's Arizona Opry Dinner and Show (Rock and Roll, Variety at Its Best, Elvis Remembered etc. etc.) Tortilla Flats/Canyon Lake, Saguaro Lake. Amazing.

A cozy studio you have to stay at. Thanks once again Joelyn and Chip much appreciated.

A must to see: Chips Custom Tile and Pottery - So beautiful and so unique.

Perfect place to hang your hat~

  • 5 of 5

Clean, cozy, well organized and outfitted with everything you could want for a comfortable home away from home. I came to the area to take a landscape painting class though the Scottsdale School of Art, which was held on the Salt River and Sanguaro Lake, making the drive to class each morning about 15 min. We painted all day in the field and coming "home" to Chip and Joelyn's guest quarters was easy. I never did find the need to eat in a restaurant for the 8 days I was here because the kitchen is so well equipped. The BBQ right outside on the covered patio worked great, for meat and grilled veggies. There is even a local market, Bashes, tag on the door key to get the local discounts on groceries. For a hiker, it's a dream location because there is a trail head just a few doors down the road. The bed is comfortable, the room temp and air is in your control, nice big shower, closet with hangers, extra blankets and goodies under the bed in containers, lots of extra's in the kitchen from spices to coffee and tea. One night I came home to find a bowl filled with freshly picked snap peas and herbs by my door. Chip and Joelyn are the perfect hosts, they are available if you need anything but allow you the privacy to just "be".
