Overview

Photos and Description of this Draper holiday cabin

1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, built for 2 adults, but can sleep 3.

If you are looking for a place to relax while surrounded with the sights and sounds of nature, stay in Fireflies. The cabin is located along the New River waterfront across from the 57-mile New River Trail State Park. The cabin rests 200 feet from the water not far from a bend in the river. You can watch the sun come up over the mountain and the mist rise above the river while sitting on one of Fireflies’ two porches. The New River is 350 million years old and retains the pristine beauty of an unspoiled waterway. Enjoy canoeing, tubing, kayaking, hiking, biking, horseback riding, or fishing from our floating dock. If you would like dining and entertainment options, Fireflies sits midway between Wytheville and Christainsburg with both cities just 35 minutes away. Located within 45 minutes of 3 wineries.

Why the Owner Chose Barren Springs: : We are originally from New Jersey. While vacationing in the New River Valley in 2004 we fell in love with the area. We purchased property on the river in 2005. As this was our second home we rented it as a vacation rental for 3 years before our retirement. In 2009 we moved into our home and began to build a small cabin on the property close to the river. The cabin, which we call Fireflies, is now ready to be enjoyed by vacationers looking for a place to relax.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin: : Year Purchased: 2010 - The cabin sits just above the riverbank and has large windows and two porches that have been designed to enable you to enjoy the abundance of nature. It is common place to see the deer in the early morning and again in the evening. Water birds of many varieties fly up and down the river each day and it is not unusual to see a bald eagle.

Owner Description/Comments:: This property is owned by Bill and Kathie Conaway both of whom are retired. Bill and his father spent the last year building the cabin.

About Kathie Conaway

We retired to the New River Valley in 2008 having lived in the southern portion of New Jersey. Kathie was an elementary school principal and Bill ran a small contracting business.

Kathie Conaway purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Kathie Conaway chose Virginia

Bill and his father built the cabin in 2009. The cabin was designed and furnished with our future guests in mind. Our aim has always been to make our guests' stay relaxing. We make every effort to make Fireflies Cabin your home away from home.

What makes this cabin unique

The cabin has been designed and located on the property in such a way that you feel like you are far 'away from it all' while being only 5 miles from Interstate 81 and 800 feet off of route 100 (Wysor Highway). Our very own floating dock sits on the river in front of the cabin. It is great for fishing and swimming.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for the gorgeous accommodations! We had a lovely stay here during our daughter's graduation and only regret that we never found this little piece of heaven before! The word "cabin" is truly unfair to your beautiful little home! We will definitely be back! PS. the pumpkin muffins were awesome!

Lovely Place to Enjoy a Long Weekend (Or More!)

  • 5 of 5

I recently stayed at Fireflies for a long weekend and was happy to see that all the glowing reviews were accurate. The house is great and has everything you need. Nice personal touches with fresh eggs, muffins and candy, and even the option to have a camp fire down near the river if desired. The setting is pretty and peaceful, but also conveniently located. I visited Cascade Falls about an hour away one day. Beautiful, dog-friendly hike (2 miles up and 2 back). Closer by is Foster Falls which was absolutely beautiful. Nice flat trail, easy walking but beautiful scenery as it goes near the river. Great weekend all around. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful cabin.

A Gem in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

Such a beautiful cabin, from the immaculate construction to the all the amenities it comes with. Located with wonderful views all around, this place provides the serenity one would look for in a mountain retreat. Whether relaxing and enjoying the peacefulness or taking in the many activities located just a short trip away this place has it all. The owners go out of their way to ensure your stay exceeds your expectations. From the fresh eggs from their chickens to the homemade muffins from Kathy, this place has all the little touches that can not be found in most places you rent. And for dog owners, this place is pet friendly with many acres for exercise and fun. This was our second trip there and will be returning soon. Thank you both for your hospitality.

The best getaway ever!

  • 5 of 5

Me and my family loved fireflies! It was the best vacation we have ever been on. With all the peace and quiet and the beautiful view from the water out there it was amazing. The house was nice and cozy with a fully stocked kitchen. We brought down so much stuff not knowing how prepared the owners were for guess and we hardly used any of our items because everything we needed was already there. They had wifi and satellite TV along games, books and movies for our entertainment. Now I saved the best for last that tub was the best experience of them all it was so relaxing and incredible we loved it. We got our money's worth and more. We will definitely be back very soon we loved it there so much!

Our family loved our weekend at Fireflies. The cabin has all the details covered and the owners did everything possible to make our stay perfect! Clean, comfortable, fresh farm eggs, and fresh muffins! The location is also amazing. We loved our time on the river out in the backyard. We will be rerurning!

A warm, welcoming home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

This property is by far the best that I have stayed in through Homeaway. Everything about it so far exceeded our expectations. From the extremely, well-stocked kitchen to the unbelievable bathroom with whirlpool. Added to this is the spectacular scenery, the river, the wildlife and the quiet peace. Bill built this house with impeccable attention to detail and Kathie and Bill have maintained it beautifully. The porch on back is a great place to relax. We will visit again soon and hope to make it an annual trip!
