Overview

About the property

Yurts available 4 seasons with deck, fire pit and optional cedar soaking tubs!

The Yurt or 'Ger' is a Mongolian structure, comparable to a First Nations Tipi. Used by nomadic peoples, it was originally made of felt and furs. After being westernized by folks from Oregon and British Columbia, the Yurt has been transformed. At Cabot Shores, we have 9 Yurts of three different styles to choose from.

Mongolian Yurts

Hand painted from ceiling to floor, our Mongolian Yurts are 16.5-19 feet in diameter with their own deck. The cozy, insulated interior features comfortable beds, one electrical outlet and a skylight. Bathrooms/shower available a short distance away. Japanese cedar soaking tubs are available for surcharge next to the yurts, some with an unbeatable view of the Atlantic Ocean, Bird Islands and our freshwater pond. Can comfortably sleep 2-5 people, depending on the yurt you choose. Most of them are also pet friendly!

The yurts we have available are:

Big Orange yurt - Double bed and single bed, wood stove, pet friendly and private deck

Little Orange yurt - Double bed, electricity and pet friendly

Little Red yurt - Double bed

Sky yurt - Double bed

Blue yurt - Double bed and single bed, electricity and pet friendly

Forest yurt - Double bed and twin bed, wood stove, electricity, private deck, and pet friendly

Cedar (tan) yurt - Queen bed, Bunk beds (2 twin), electricity, wood stove, private deck and pet friendly

Big Red yurt - Queen bed, single bed, Foldout twin bed (couch), wood stove, electricity, pet friendly

All yurts do not have bathrooms inside but they are close by bath houses or lodge bathrooms and showers.

About Dr. Paul

At Cabot Shores, your hosts are Dr. Paul and Barbara Weinberg, Cosmo the guide dog and friendly staff. Barbara is an accomplished acupuncturist, vegetarian chef and gardener. Dr. Paul is a former 'road warrior', teacher and psychologist, who considers his doctorate now to be in 'adventure travel'. Paul can be found jamming on the blues harmonica and trombone, hiking, yoloboarding or kayaking with Barbara and Cosmo.

Dr. Paul purchased this bungalow in 2004

Why Dr. Paul chose Indian Brook

We've traveled the world and found Cape Breton to be a unique, unspoiled and sacred place. We bought and renovated a farmhouse at Breton Cove in 2000, then saw the opportunity at Indian Brook to build a special resort and retreat center where people can easily discover and create their own adventure.

The natural beauty of Cape Breton, and the warmth and hospitality among its three main cultures (Mi'kmaq, Acadian and Scottish) drew us to create Cabot Shores, where great stories and memories are guaranteed.

What makes this bungalow unique

Cabot Shores is not just a bed to sleep in, it is a chance to create your own adventure all in one location. With so many different and unique accommodations, you can experience something completely new each time you come - from a Mongolian Yurt to achalet, from the cozy lodge to the tree house domes in our orchard! Rent a Kayak, canoe or yoloboard to explore the pond and Indian Brook, then visit our private beach and the ocean beyond by crossing on the Eagle Feather ferry. Have a picnic by the river or hike the waterfall trail. See moose cross the water while sitting in one of our cedar soaking tubs. Try meditation, Qi Gong or acupuncture. Ask us how we can help create the adventure you are looking for.

Great time in the tan yurt. Very cozy with a fire on a cold night.

Cape Breton gem

  • 5 of 5

Staying in the yurt was the highlight of our trip to NovaScotia. Do to cancelations we got up graded to a bigger yurt which was more private and had its own outdoor hot tub. Soaking in the hot tub on a cool fall night under the stars was the therapy we needed after a long day. The food at the main chalet is not to be missed! Although it's a small selection every dish we had was one of our bests meals and knowing that most of it came from the garden on the property is the tipping on the cake. This will for sure become a staple for all our future Nova Scotia trips.

It was fun to stay in the yurt!

  • 5 of 5

The yurt was comfortable and private. We enjoyed eating at the Bistro, as well. The food was delicious and the staff was courteous, friendly, and helpful. We watched the stars through the skylight as we fell asleep. The staff also gave us good recommendations for area hiking. We would go there again.

Peaceful gateaway

  • 4 of 5

It was our first time staying at a yurt! Kids had a great time! So did the parents. I loved the morning meditation session.

Family loved taking the boat to the beach. It was so peaceful there! We didn't want to leave. Wish we could stay longer :)

I give it 4 stars because upon booking I was told our yurt will accommodate 5 (2 adults 3 children) but when we were taken to our yurt there was only one bed inside. Staff had to bring in extra sleeping mats, which was fun to sleep on for the kids.

Also, wished there was a bit more offered for breakfast. Although it was very tasty, a bit expensive for the variety offered.

Fun alternative to traditional hotel

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at Cabot Shores. The yurt was a good new experience. There were lots of mosquitoes the first night but we found a hole in the screen and covered it and the next night was bug free! Friendly staff and very scenic area!

Perfect place to relax and disconnect!!!

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for something fun and relaxing to ring in the new year and we were not dissapointed! We had the opportunity to spend one night in a cabin and one night in a Yurt and you can`t go wrong with either! When life gets busy it is a perfect place to unplug (no cell service was a real bonus!).

Dr. Paul and the staff where very helpful and always there if you need them, but not intrusive in any way! They even convinced us to join them for a polar bear swim....so much fun!

I can say with 100% certainty that we will be back and we will (and have been) telling everyone about it!

Fantastic experience for birthday

  • 5 of 5

Travelling with husband and my parents for my 50th birthday this was a fantastic experience . We stayed in red yurt which was comfortable and unusual as well. We had great fun betting across to the beach by rope ferry to enjoy wine on the beach. Paul and Jay made us feel welcome and we enjoyed all our lovely prepared meals. The breakfast set us up for a walk in the national park. We paid for the hot tub and would recommend this especially after a good day out.

As we are on the ocean side of the Cabot Trail, there are beautiful drives and hikes nearby, some to waterfalls starting on the property. Also you are on the artisans loop with lots of little shops selling leather works, iron works, glass art, jewelry, pottery and more.
