Overview

About the property

Log Home by Kilcher Family Homestead, hand crafted by Atz Kilcher

A beautiful, hand crafted log cabin, fully outfitted, next to an Alaskan historic site of rich significance & space. Can accomodate large groups (4 bedrooms and loft) or small. Each log in this cabin was carefully downed, limbed, crafted, notched, and fitted by a long time homesteader, Atz Kilcher with help from his brother Otto Kilcher. Sitting above stunning scenery, the cabin provides modern amenities in a rustic setting. A mix of antique furniture with modern and log style furniture in the kitchen, living room and downstairs bedrooms. Bamboo kitchen flooring is a treat and the cabin has been lovingly maintained (new downstairs shower, new laundry & high end machines, new tiling and carpeting throughout). We have provided a wood stove with a custom built rock hearth for ambience, but has upstairs and downstairs oil heat for convenience.

The large master bedroom overlooks a view you will never forget (think Kachemak Bay, glaciers, mountains, pink and purple sunsets and, admittedly more rarely, the aurora borealis), and there is a small bedroom right next door if you have a youngster you prefer to keep close, and two windo nooks that even adults sleep in. The older kids or adult guests will enjoy the two bedrooms on the lowest level. Sited on a 50 acre parcel next to a homestead where eight children of an early State Senator grew up in an austere 400 square foot homesteaders cabin.

Easy access to the Kilcher Family Homestead provides over 600 acres to hike in if you desire along with prized access to the beach via one of only two beach access sites outisde of Homer on the near side of McNeil Canyon. There is a pole barn and meadow/pasture above the house that is fun to explore. There are also meadows, and other interesting land features surrounding the cabin. It is not unususal to see moose, black bear (shy ones), porcupines, sandhill cranes, eagles, hawks, song birds, marmots, seals and other wild life on the Kilcher Homestead.

About The Owner

I and my husband are both recently retired from the USMC. We have moved home to Alaska, and are working in Anchorage. We are happy to share our beautiful log home next to the Kilcher Homestead. I was the youngest of eight children who grew up in a pioneer setting after our parents homesteaded in Alaska the 1930's and 1940's. I literally walked two miles to school, in the snow, uphill, both ways. You'll see -- but now the road is gravelled and driveable.

The Owner purchased this chateau / country house in 2003

Why The Owner chose Kenai Peninsula

This log home was built by my brother Atz Kilcher next to our family Homestead. We purchased it from him and intend to live there when we retire. I lived a rustic life growing up. Decided I was done with that! This log home has all the luxuries I ever dreamed of.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

This home has three full levels, with a view that is uncomparable. A special feature is a cabinet in the kitchen hand crafted from the recovered logs of the 100 square foot fox trappers cabin built in the 1800's that my parents lived in for three years when they first moved to Homer. The birth of the older children mandated my father build my mother the 400 square foot 'mansion' that we all grew up in. Watch the film (shown previously at the Smithsonian, and taken on tour in Europe), and then walk or drive the half mile to where history happened.

Amazing views

  • 5 of 5

Absolutely loved our stay on the Kilcher property. Everyone was so welcoming and friendly. We enjoyed hiking the beautiful lush property, and fishing from the beach in the high tide. The house has plenty of room for guests to spread out if needed, very clean and rustically decorated. I really enjoyed the family sharing their history with us(video history in the house), also the house is filled with family momentos and pictures of the Kilcher's early homesteading. The views from this house are just amazing. The upstairs master is huge with big open windows that look out over the hillside and bay. We didn't want to leave :-(

Awesome!

Love this place. There was plenty of room for my party of 7. Two were under six. Lots of grass to play on outside. A view of glaciers across the bay was fantastic ! Clean lots of extras. Catkin was a great host.

Beautiful cabin, perfect for groups

  • 5 of 5

I stayed at Homer in July 2017 with a group of 7 friends and Eagles Rest was a perfect place to start our visit to Alaska. The house is beautiful and has plenty of space and beds for large group. I was traveling with a group of 7, but the house could have easily accommodated 4 or 5 more people. Catkin was a super friendly hostess, offering us tours of the property and a late check-out, which was much appreciated. The highlights of the house were definitely the grill on the porch, looking out over the bay and mountains and the quick hike down to the private Kilcher black sand beach, which would be a great spot to have a picnic. I can't reccomend staying in Eagles Rest (or any of Catkin's other properties) enough.

Loving Alaska at Eagles Rest

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful cabin and stunning views of the Kachemak Bay framed perfectly by the phenomenal handy work and cabin building skills of Otto and Atz Kilcher. Very restful and peaceful setting. Enjoyed the museum and learning more about the homestead thru the caretaker Andrew who made us feel very welcomed. Met many of the Kilcher family who were very lovely people and did not hesitate to share great stories with us. The cabin had everything you need to feel right at home. Wish we would have spent a few more days here!

Great Location and Views. Plenty of room for our extended family of ten.

  • 5 of 5

Catkin is a wonderful host. You will be staying in her home. The views of the bay are spectacular. Plenty of room around the property to play outside. We used all three levels for six adults and four grandchildren. The bottom is a separate unit with two bedrooms, bath and kitchen area accessed by a inside staircase. The master bedroom on the top floor is roomy. Be aware the views are wonderful but it cannot be darkened to sleep(eye shades required) in summer months. We were greeted by two mother Moose and babies nearby while there. Catkin will gladly fill you in on Kilcher family history and offer a tour of the original homestead. Be aware it is about a 15 minute drive to downtown Homer and the entrance to the spit. This was not an issue for us. Nice being outside of town in a quiet location. We stayed June 15-20 2017
