Peaceful little cabin among the trees

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a lovely, peaceful stay at this little cabin in the woods. Waking up surrounded by trees makes for a great start to a day of hiking on nearby trails or canoeing on the Shenandoah River. All appliances in the kitchen are in working order and the whole place is tidy and clean. For future guests - note that the cabin is easy to miss, especially if you arrive after dark. Since it's out of cell service, look closely at your directions before hitting the road. For owners or rental company - what's with all the notes about tipping the housekeeping staff? There are reminders to tip everywhere in the cabin which is a little strange. Hopefully, you'll work with them to be sure they are adequately paid. I'm happy to tip, but the volume of notes indicates there might be a larger problem. Thank you for a lovely and relaxing weekend. We hope to be back soon!

Quiet and simple

  • 4 of 5

Spent a long weekend here. It was very relaxing. We drove in at 11 o'clock at night and really do not recommend that at all. You really are up in the mountains and the dirt roads can get pretty steep and rough. That was really the only negative though. The sunset from the side yard was amazing, the starts at night from the deck are wonderful. It is very quiet and peaceful there. It takes about 15 minutes to get anywhere from the house, and if you really want to get away, this place is excellent. you won't be able to take a phone call but at least with Verizon I would still get texts a couple times a day so you can stay informed but detached. with that said, download or print the directions prior to leaving civilization. The only recommendation I have is to have a sign of the house name that is visible from the street at night. A simple spray painted sign hanging next to the swing would be perfect. Thanks for the excellent weekend.

Week at Altitude Coziness

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay at Altitude Coziness. Easy access to Shenandoah NP, Washington and Jefferson NF, Luray Caverns, and other attractions. Cabin is away from it all and we spent nights grilling and sitting by the fire. Neighbors were friendly as well. Definitely recommend!

lovely location. decent amenities.

  • 3 of 5

the good: the place couldn't have been located in a better location. remote. hard to get to; meaning unless the weather is in primo condition, you'll need a 4-wheel drive in order to climb the steep gravelly incline up to the cabin. we got REAL lucky with the weather considering we managed to make it up in my manual little sporty Mazda. I still consider this a good because it keeps the riff raff away.

the other goods... the cabin was surrounded with the lovely sounds of nature. not to mention, what a brilliant night sky! unblemished by city lights.

the place is clean and very cozy. perfect for a couple and a pet. any more than that is pushing it.

the bad: the lack of some amenities. not only are there about seven different signs for you to tip the housekeeper (she must've gotten shafted big time for there to be that many clues to please tip), you need to bring your own trash down with you. so, that large tip I would've left for the housekeeper ended up just being a decent tip. also, the towels are hard as hell, the shampoos and conditioners have been used and some were completely empty, and there were no paper towels (I did ask the owner of the cabin ahead of time about the paper towels and he did alert me there would prob be none there, though so we did come prepared).

lastly, although there's a landline phone, there's no long distance. which defeats the entire purpose. we ended up having to climb up to the top of the mountain in order to finally attain service to make sure there were no emergencies with our elderly parents.

that really was the worst of it, though. the only thing I'd really ask of the owner to consider updating is the trash removal and phone service. both being a serious inconvenience to the renter, unfortunately.

the cabin itself is adorable. a very relaxing getaway for anyone who needs a break from the every day bustle/hustle.

side note: do yourself a favor and skip the dvd of The Sitter they have on the dvd shelf. you've been warned.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. We are glad you overall enjoyed the cabin. On a couple of points you raised: - You raise a good point about the trash. We will think of a better system. We do ask renters to take the trash down because we want to avoid having trash in the house as much as possible, which can attract critters. The housekeeper cannot always come right away as guests leave. But I agree with you that we should be able to find a better system. - As for the phone, we do keep a phone for emergencies, but we like to keep the cabin remote. There is indeed limited to none cell phone reception, and we find that this helps us and our guests "unplug". The phone number is listed in the rental packet, so, if there is an emergency, it is possible to be reached.

Very nice place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Part of our honeymoon was spent on this property. I enjoyed how relaxing the environment of the cabin felt. The area is beautiful and remote. The owner was easy to work with.
