Overview

About the property

Farmhouse, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 6)

Rusticate in style at Fox Hollow Farm! This comfortably elegant old farmhouse has been lovingly renovated and is fully equipped with all mod cons, from wi-fi, smart TV, and bluetooth stereo to fully-equipped gourmet kitchen. Surrounded by woods and fruit trees and views of the mountains of Acadia, the house is only a half-hour away from Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, but serene and secluded enough for a walk or bike ride down quiet country roads to our local sandy beach or our swimming hole. As of Spring 2017, we’ve completed some significant upgrades to the house, including a stylishly remodeled bathroom, new high-performance washer/dryer, and fresh paint in several rooms.

Inside the House: The story goes that the sunroom was originally the General Store for the area in the late 1700s; the shelves today display vintage glassware. The bright, open kitchen is a favorite spot to hang out, with bench seats around the table and and beautiful views of Sargeant Mountain. The decor is elegant, cheerful, and comfortable. Each room is painted a different color. Vintage furniture includes incredibly comfy couches, a large desk, and seating for up to six. Whimsical details throughout the house are designed to bring a smile.

Outside: The farmhouse is on two+ acres surrounded by open grass and a big red barn, with not a neighbor in sight. A front porch under the lilacs provides a pleasant spot to relax in one of the Adirondack chairs and take in the surrounding beauty. The back patio, with a new picnic table and setee, makes for memorable evening gatherings and barbecues. The fragrant perennial garden out front attracts butterflies and hummingbirds. The wildlife here is spectacular: you’re likely to spot eagles, osprey, and a variety of warblers in the woods. Foxes and deer are not uncommon; we’ve also seen moose, bear and bobcat from the kitchen window. At dusk, you may hear the drumming of a grouse or the ethereal song of a thrush. Fireflies provide lively evening entertainment. Spring brings the timberdoodles and spring peepers, and in the autumn, the foliage is phenomenal. Outdoor amenities also include a charcoal barbecue, kayaks, bicycles, beach chairs, and coolers. You'll also find croquet, bocce ball, and horseshoes to take out on the lawn.

Some of our prior guests' comments:

“This was truly one of our most wonderful family vacations. The farmhouse is gorgeous, the property lovely and the location absolutely perfect.”

“Family meals in the kitchen, frisbee in the yard, and Lamoine State Beach were excellent things to do. Thank you for your tasteful and welcoming place.”

“What a great place! We loved exploring the house and yard. The kids picked raspberries along the periphery, and we had a terrific football game in front of the barn.”

“We feel like we've found a real jewel. None of us was ready to leave, and we can't wait to come back!”

About Phillip and Lee

We fell in love with Maine a few years ago when Lee's Mom moved to the area. Even though we both grew up in California, we each have family roots in New England and we feel a deep connection to the region. We're currently splitting our time between San Francisco and the farmhouse.

Phillip and Lee purchased this farmhouse in 2004

Why Phillip and Lee chose Downeast and Acadia

Having been longtime renters in San Francisco, we wanted a home to call our own. In the summer of 2004 we became lost on the way to Lamoine Beach, and found this house for sale. Lee still plans to actually farm the land one day, when she quits her day job!

What makes this farmhouse unique

This house has an undeniably positive energy about it. Every year that we return we recognize it. Whether it's something about the layout of the house, its southerly orientation facing Sargeant Mountain, or something deep in the old wood rafters and beams, this house instills a sense of peace, wholeness, and joy. We can't help but imagine the many generations of families and friends here over the years have felt the same way.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with three young adult children mid-August. We had plenty of space in the yard and no nearby neighbors. We stayed at the end of the Perseids Meteor Shower and one night counted 51 shooting stars. Kids enjoyed taking the kayaks from the barn down to the nearby park and also found enough mussels to cook up and enjoy. Dog loved swimming and retrieving at nearby Racoon Cove, a two minute drive. House itself had plenty of room to spread out and was attractively decorated. Kitchen had staples as well as lots of appliances to make all the favorites, including ice cream. Great mudroom with washer/dryer so you don't track the Maine wilderness through the house. We didn't turn on the tv until the last night and found lots of channels so if you have to watch tv, they have it! About a 30 minute drive to Acadia and Bar Harbor. Mount Desert Ice Cream in Bar Harbor is a must! Fifteen minutes to the nearest town, Ellsworth, to stock up on essentials or to hit LLBean outlet. Everyone really enjoyed the property and had a great time. I would recommend this property to a friend.

Stay at Fox Hollow Farm

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderfully relaxing stay at Fox Hollow Farm. The house is rustic without a doubt and it’s also very comfortable and clean. The kitchen is very well equipped with pots, pans, small appliances and utensils. The refrigerator is huge and I really liked the washer and dryer. Both bathrooms have been recently renovated and the beds are comfortable. We called the owners with a question while we were there and Phillip responded immediately and was very helpful.

The owners compiled a very useful guest book. We used quite a few of the suggestions. That’s how we ended up at Tracey’s for dinner. The place is a dive. The food was delicious and inexpensive. Try the fried clams with onion rings but call first because they have reduced hours. We didn’t get to have the pizza at the goat farm. They are only open three days a week and we missed those days but we did drive over to watch the goats battle over ownership of a large rock. It was amusing.

Fox Hollow Farm is teaming with wildlife. We saw deer, skunks, porcupine and also saw a bobcat near the goat farm. 😊 We brought our dogs and a high powered flash light for their nightly outings. The flashlight saved us from quills and noxious odors. The nights on the farm are really quiet. I have never experienced such a high degree of silence at night before.

We really enjoyed our stay at Fox Hollow Farm. It was conveniently located only 30 minutes away form Acadia and Bar Harbor yet situated in a tranquil and relaxing atmosphere.

Just before leaving, I took the dogs for a walk down the street and saw a spotted fawn resting motionless in the brush. It was the perfect ending to a perfect vacation.

Beautiful setting with a few issues

  • 3 of 5

This is a beautiful, but older home in the countryside near Bar Harbor. It is spacious and nicely decorated. There are books and games about the house and also wi-fi and Netflix if you want to watch a movie. The bedrooms have very low ceilings upstairs so be careful of that. The kitchen is equipped, but the sink is in dire need of replacement and some of the dishes are soiled. There are plenty of spices and the dishwasher, refrigerator, and oven work well. The upstairs bathroom appears newer, but the downstairs bathroom is older and has mildew growing in the shower. Also the water pressure is an issue as you can't even wash your hands if someone is taking a shower.

The owners are generous is allowing guests to use the kayaks and bicycles. They also have a book which gives some hints on things to do in the area.

The location is farther away from Bar Harbor and even the nearest town of Ellsworth than we expected. That is our fault, not the owners, but I thought other guests should be informed. It took at least 15 minutes to drive to the grocery store or a restaurant. To get over to Acadia was more than half an hour.

Finally, the owners ask for a very large deposit, larger than any I've ever had to pay on VRBO.

Owner's Response: Kim, apologies about the water pressure! We have a hunch this has to do with a new water treatment system we installed in the spring...we have put in a call to a plumber to take a look. Thank you too for alerting us to the soiled dishes and shower. We’ve had very positive reports of house cleanliness this season, so it’s a bit of a puzzle, but we will be talking to our cleaners to remedy. As for the drive to Bar Harbor—Rte 3 is undergoing construction this year and all the locals in the area are complaining about the delays. With this vintage home, there are always projects! :) We remodeled the upstairs bathroom and re-painted three of the rooms just this spring. But we’d take its authenticity and character any day over an all-new, four-star hotel, and we love to share its unique charms with like-minded guests. Thank you for your honest review.

Perfect house to get away and still be close enough to great things to do in Maine!

  • 5 of 5

The house is exactly as pictured. An adorable home with plenty of room for everyone. We weren't here much beyond sleeping but we always seemed to congregate around the kitchen table. The house is cozy and inviting and the owners have been great to deal with.

When/if we ever come back to Maine, we plan to stay here again!

Thanks for a great holiday!
