You will not need a car. Built in 1890 and renovated in 2010, the house combines historic charm with a modern layout. It has a completely open floor plan on the main level. It is furnished comfortably for a family of four (five if counting a crib) without cramming. Larger families may want to consider a combined rental of this property with the ground floor flat in the same structure (HomeAway #340015). The main house and ground floor flat are totally independent, with separate entrances and mechanical systems.

Your rental includes a free permit for street parking. However, due to our proximity to the major tourist attractions we recommend not renting a car. Should you need a rental vehicle for a day to visit out-of-town sites, there are rental car offices minutes from the house.

About Alec Smyth

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?

What makes this townhome unique

There is a lot to see in Washington, with over fifty museums, but unfortunately we feature the very longest commutes in the nation. The museums have no parking, which may be a deliberate strategy to reduce the number of cars. Capitol Hill is the area immediately surrounding the US Capitol, and because it is a historical conservation neighborhood of small houses that cannot be altered, it contains almost no hotels. By staying at a home on the Western edge of Capitol Hill, you are closer to the sites than at a hotel, and free from the hassles of commuting because everything is within walking distance. Quite aside from the convenience of the location, both house and neighborhood are charming.

A lovely townhome in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely, well-decorated townhome perfectly located for those who may have business in the Capital or simply want to be within walking distance of the Mall area museums.

The owners provided an excellent guidebook in advance that describes the home, parking, nearby dining venues and grocery locations, just about everything one would ever need to know. It was extraordinarily useful to study in advance to make the most of your Washington time.

We found the lower level provides enough space to entertain a post-meeting gathering of 15 or so people, if you are there for business, and space for a family to spread out following a day of touring the District. The lower bathroom is small, but it keeps guests from wandering upstairs. The kitchen has all the needed supplies, and the cabinets are placed everywhere in a clever manner that maximizes the space.

The bedrooms are well-sized with a desk in each , there is plenty of storage space, and the beds are very comfortable. The street noises are not bothersome, even in the bedroom facing one-way C Street.

We enjoyed the stay and plan on booking this townhouse on our next Washington, DC visit!

Everything we were hoping for!

  • 5 of 5

The 3 of us stayed for 4 nights. The house was very clean, very well equipped and well organized. The description by the owner was accurate. There were some games to play and I was happy to use their child friendly kitchenware for my 2 year old. The bathroom is a little small but the space works. The location was ideal since it was a 1 minute walk for the park with a kid playground and close enough to walk everywhere: capitol, train station... I would recommend it.

Wonderful owner and Location is Great

  • 5 of 5

I could not have asked for a better location and easier check in. The code was sent prior to arrival and we walked right in. The owner answered so many questions I had not related to the condo that enabled my girls weekend to be a success! I would recommend this place for anyone with a party of 5 or less. Great place!

House was perfectly located and maintained in an adorable and safe neighborhood!

  • 5 of 5

I was in town with my mother and sister to research venues for my son's rehearsal dinner. The house was perfect for all three of us to comfortably sleep and visit. The house not only had all of the conveniences we needed such as a coffee maker, but when we woke up and it was raining outside, we found umbrellas for our use! Would definitely stay here again!

Very nicely appointed & perfect for our girls weekend getaway! Great location, nice neighborhood.

Alec's home brochure was EXTREMELY useful in locating small grocery store & wine/ liquor store just past the park. The Eastern Market & surrounding neighborhood were a real treat just down 7th Street. Would definetely stay again!

Great Location, Very responsive rental

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed staying at the Stanton House! Alec is fantastic to work with. Super responsive. The home is clean and it was very nice to be stocked with paper towels, bath tissue, shampoo, conditioner, etc. It made it very easy! The layout is really nice.

My only complaint was that the master bedroom mattress is very firm. This is personal preference, but I had to sleep on the couch because of how firm it was. However, the couch was very comfortable.

Thanks for a great stay!

Map

Car: not necessary

The house is located on a quiet friendly street less than half a block from Stanton Park and one block from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs.

Other Activities: US Capitol, Smithsonian Museums, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, National Archives, Newseum, Folger Shakespeare Library
