Photos and Description of this Capitol Hill holiday townhome

This is an attractive ground floor flat in a Victorian town house, and was completely renovated in 2010. It is on a quiet residential street, yet as centrally located as it gets. 'Restaurant Row', a stretch of Massachusetts Avenue with numerous restaurants, is only one block away.

Less than five blocks away:

- US Capitol

- US Supreme Court

- Library of Congress

- Folger Shakespeare Library

- Belmont-Paul Women's Equality museum

- Union Station

Within 1.5 miles:

- Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum

- Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

- National Gallery of Art

- Smithsonian American Art Museum

- National Museum of the American Indian

- Hirshorn Museum (modern art)

- National Archives

- Verizon Center (Washington Wizards NBA team)

- Madam Tussaud's

- International Spy Museum

- Newseum

- US Botanical Garden

- National Building Museum

You will not need a car. In terms of size, the flat is ideal for a couple, or perhaps a couple with a child. It is also suitable for seniors, because the entrance is at street level and there are no stairs. The flat is totally independent from the main house above, with a separate entrance, mechanical systems, phone line, etc. To sum it up, this little place is small in size, but big on charm!

About Alec Smyth

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?

Alec Smyth purchased this townhome in 2010

Why Alec Smyth chose Washington DC

We picked this home expressly for vacation rental use, with the hindsight of having lived in this area for close to twenty years. It is just ideally situated with a combination of easy access to the major sites, and quiet once back home.

What makes this townhome unique

The location! This is a place which is extremely quiet, where you are the shortest possible distance to the major DC attractions, and where you feel safe walking at any hour of night or day. It's a neighborhood that is utterly livable. There is wonderful grocery shopping nearby, restaurants you would visit with the family, bookstores, etc. Metro is a few blocks away if you need to go beyond walking range.

Great location, comfortable ground floor flat

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful place to stay! It was close to everything, including Union Station, the Capital and Mall, a nice park, great restaurants. The flat is sleek and modern, sparklingly clean, and comfortable. It provided the perfect place to rest and relax after a long day of sightseeing! Alec was quick to respond to a problem we had (totally my fault!). We would definitely stay there again when visiting D.C.! It is a gem!!

Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for a week, and it was the perfect location for us to stay near relatives. We drove in and were able to park on the street because of relative's parking pass, but did not move the car the entire time. Easy walking distance to Union Station, H Street restaurants (Dangerously Delicious Pies!), Eastern Market, the Capitol and Library of Congress. We primarily took Uber to other places that were not as close.

Alec provided lots of information on the area and how to get around, as well as specifics on what was included in the apartment. Furnishings were very comfortable, with everything needed for a nice stay - even including umbrellas for the rain. Capitol Hill Supermarket is close by to pick up a few groceries.

This will definitely be my go-to place when visiting DC again.

Wonderful apartment! Clean and comfortable. Great neighborhood.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Alec's apartment in DC. We especially liked the comfortable bed, thick towels, new shower head, and great air conditioning on a hot day in DC. The location was perfect for walking to the Capital and the Mall. We enjoyed walking in the neighborhood and visiting the restaurants nearby, especially Cafe Berlin. We walked to the Eastern Market on Saturday and highly recommend this. We can't thank Alec enough for his directions to the parking at Union Station. We probably would have driven around in circles before finding the ramp we needed if we didn't have his directions. His booklet was great for recommendations. Thanks Alec for a wonderful trip to DC. We will recommend your apartment to everyone.

Very nice location

  • 3 of 5

It was a nice clean apartment. Easy to walk or uber anywhere in town. It was frustrating for us with Internet and cable out the entire week. The owner can't be blamed I believe he tried to resolve the issue. Never the less it was not what we hoped for.

This was the first time my husband and I visited DC and we found this flat to be a great place to stay. It is on a nice, residential street and we saw many people walking to and from work as well as out running or biking on the weekend. We stayed three nights and had dinner our first night at La Loma Mexican restaurant on Massachusetts Avenue, just a short walk from the flat. We walked everywhere on our first full day including the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, war memorials and Holocuast museum. Another day we tried the capital bikeshare, finding two bikes in the neighborhhod, and biked to Arlington Cemetary and then to DuPont Circle. For those who prefer public transportation, buses are all around and Union Station is just a five to ten minute walk. For those who like theater, a bonus we found on our last day was the Folger Shakespeare Library, home to the world's largest Shakespeare collection. This is no more than a leisurely ten minute walk. The property was nicely maintained with a new and fully stocked kitchen. The mattress on the queen bed was wonderful and there were plenty of pillows. Considering the age of the building, central air is a plus. I would give it a five star but the bathroom is actually a bit dated. If this were redone the flat would be perfect - especially for those who may not want to deal with stairs.

Great DC Location

  • 5 of 5

This was the first trip to DC for my wife and myself. The location is outstanding being a few blocks east of the capital. The location is great as his away from the hustle and bustle as DC was extremely busy. The location is extremely safe as there are many people walking to and from work, restaurants, running, walking dogs, etc. The Capital Hill Supermarket will have everything that you might need. As far as transportation is concerned, there is a bus stop on the corner. We mostly Ubered and never waited more than 5 minutes at the house for a driver. I would also recommend an Uber from the airport. We did use the train for longer trips to Arlington National Cemetery. The walk is about 12 - 15 minutes to the Eastern Market train stop. The house itself is outstanding and it is hard to believe that the house was built in 1900 as it has been well maintained and is in great shape. The bed is very comfortable and there is a ton of storage behind the mirror that we found. We didn't use the kitchen at all except for the refrigerator as we ate out for all of our meals. I am definitely coming back and staying here in the future. Alex was great to work with.

The house is located on a quiet friendly street less than half a block from Stanton Park and one block from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs.

Other Activities: US Congress, Smithsonian, Newseum, Library of Congress, National Archives, Folger Shakespeare
