About Mo Hillstrand

I inherited this property and built Laughing Raven in 2000 from logs harvested from the Kenai Peninsula. I'm a neurology nurse practitioner and work in Anchorage but plan on retiring to Homer. In the meantime I'd like to share my home with individuals who wish to have an unforgettable Alaskan adventure.

Mo Hillstrand purchased this house in 2000

Why Mo Hillstrand chose Homer

I built Laughing Raven on property that was an original Alaskan homestead. I spent my summers as a child playing on the Homer Spit. Laughing Raven is conveniently located 3 miles from the center of Homer on 20 private forested acres with spectacular views and very comfortable accommodations.

What makes this house unique

You can sit by the fire place and plan many out-doors activities Homer has to offer. You can also just relax on the decks or in the hot tub and just enjoy the scenic views and observe the wild life.

Fabulous week at Laughing Raven

  • 5 of 5

We made Laughing Raven our destination for one of our three weeks in Alaska. Our three children and their spouses met us here, but their schedules were such that we never had more than six of us at a time. The three bedrooms and two baths worked great for our numbers, and we never really used the beautiful TV area in the loft.

Everything impressed us from the moment we drove up the winding driveway. The care with which Laughing Raven was constructed is just the beginning of a spectacular home. The rooms were very clean, and the home felt cozy from the outset. As we explored, we found more to love.

The open living area kept everyone involved, whether cooking, dishwashing or exploring maps.

We enjoyed the hot tub nearly every day, used the grill to cook the fish we caught, and loved having a separate laundry room. The beds are not just comfortable, they feel brand new, and the linens were pressed. The cupboards were stocked with important things other guests left behind -- sugar, malt vinegar, a box of pasta. Mo made sure there were nice supplies in the bathrooms, including shampoo/conditioner/body wash, soft soap and toilet paper.

The view from the bluff is spectacular, especially on the clear days. The wood shed keep our fireplace fires stoked. We enjoyed at least three walks on the nearby homestead trail, the views from North Fork Rd, fishing on the Anchor River, and a trip across Katchemak Bay for a hike to the glacier lake. Our adventurous pair hiked Grace Ridge Trail across the bay one day, with 3000' up and back down.

It's hard to summarize what a wonderful vacation we enjoyed at Laughing Raven. Today we moved closer to fishing on the Kenai and Kasilof Rivers. All six of us would pay anything to be back at Laughing Raven! Comments include: "It's fine, but it's just not Laughing Raven." And, "Mom, you hit it out of the park with Laughing Raven, nothing is going to be as nice."

I am absolutely sure we will never find a nicer, more welcoming home at HomeAway.

Beautiful home in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at Laughing Raven. We were 6 adults and the house gave all of us enough space to be together or separate.

The house looks exactly like on the pictures, is very clean and is well equipped.

The view from the house and the grounds it is on are spectacular and it is very close to town. We got to see moose in the yard.

All in all we had a wonderful stay and even got to meet Mo at the end of our stay, who is a wonderful person. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home!

Lovely home in a beautiful, peaceful setting.

We enjoyed gathering on the deck, listening to the birds, and taking in the view in the distance. The hot tub was perfect after busy days hiking and biking nearby. The kitchen is well-equipped for all meals and the grill is in good condition.
