About Robert Fitzpatrick
We are a couple in our 70's, deeply involved in the arts, multilingual and multicultural. We divide our time between New York and Paris. Our passions are music, particularly opera, contemporary art and architecture, theatre, sailing and skiing.
Robert Fitzpatrick purchased this House in 1995
Why Robert Fitzpatrick chose Montclair Colony
It is close to the Hamptons but far more relaxed. Life on the island has a different rhythm. It is a welcoming place where our children, grandchildren, dogs, friends and happy strangers want to come. There is a sense of well being that is very different from the faster paced life in New York or Paris.
What makes this House unique
A chance to look at interesting contemporary art, an opportunity to hear young music prodigies from around the world, the joy of walking on beaches and through nature preserves, the possibility of swimming in Fresh Pond or the Bay or jumping in the Ocean. The joy of finding quiet places to read in a house full of people and a studio conducive to writing.

Robert's home was the perfect home away from home for my group's stay. The house was spacious, well-equipped, and in a beautiful setting -- my friends could not stop raving about it. The floor to ceiling windows, large backyard, and back dock were made for appreciating beautiful sunsets and starry nights. We also very much enjoyed taking the kayaks out on the water! Would happily stay again!
Beautiful Shelter Island home on the water
This is a wonderful house that is beautiful, tasteful, clean and comfortable. Beautifully designed and decorated with lots of windows that show off the incredible waterfront views. This is a special place!
The epitome of waterfront relaxation with many available activities!!
When my husband and I opened the gate, we knew we were in a very special place. Outstanding gardens surrounded the home, offering quiet spots to read a book, relax with a cup of tea, or catch up with friends and family. The home was furnished in classic Hamptons beachfront style, with lots of contemporary art gracing the walls. The home was very comfortable and inviting. The open concept living area flowed onto the large deck with outdoor dining and seating areas. The sunset overlooking the water was perfect. We enjoyed swimming and kayaking right off the dock. The kitchen was fully equipped and opened to the great room and water views.
The upper level had a spacious and very well designed master bedroom sanctuary with water views from the bed and bath and a separate office area. Three additional bedrooms and two baths completed the guest accommodations in the main house.
A separate cottage was well designed and furnished with incredible water views as well.
The property offered water activities and equipment, games, music, books, and bikes for touring the island, all located in a quiet neighborhood. It was a welcome retreat from everyday life.
Sylvia and Bob were gracious and accommodating, a rarity in today's world.
I hope to return again and enjoy this very special home!
Inspiring and beautiful
I am a professor at NYU and took my research group here for a five-day writing retreat. We were a group of 9 to 11 people (at various times). We could not have chosen a better place. Bob and Sylvie's house was quiet, clean, stylish, and right by the water. It had lots of light, lots of space, couches and nooks for everyone to work, and a well-equipped kitchen. The art around the house was fascinating and orders of magnitude better than the average VRBO. Bob and Sylvie responded promptly when we couldn't figure out how to use the sink garbage disposal; a handyman came over and helped us, although in the end it turned out that we had ourselves misplaced a part. Very strongly recommended!!
Family Boat Trip 2014
Our annual family boys boat trip is a major highlight for our family. This was our 25th annual trip and this was our best ever trip. We have been to Martha's Vineyard to Elizabeth City, NC and everywhere in between and this has been the best. The house, the rear deck, the dock, the bikes, the kayaks, the location and the owners were perfect. Each night we would all sit outside on the deck sharing a meal, stories and laughter.
For anyone who wants to escape to heaven, you will not find a better location.
Many places are charming but this home is a rare breed.
We stayed one week over the winter holidays and enjoyed the quiet, going for walks in Mashomack Preserve or in Hither Hills, and the beautiful light at the end of every day.
The house is decorated with great taste and comfort, with the multi-space living area spacious enough for our extended family to each have his or her own area for their alone time.
Bob & Sylvie are extremely considerate and attentive, and made us feel truly welcome in their home.
One third of Shelter Island is devoted to an extraordinary Nature Preserve, with wonderful trails for hiking.
