Why Catharine Kolb chose Rhode Island

It's beautiful and unspoiled, easy to get to, and a place to chill out

What makes this house unique

marvelous bird watching, star spotting, rambling on beaches or trails, biking the challenging hills, enjoying the local music scene, taking great photos and being at the beach.

I jog, bike and meander from the front door. I sling a towel around my neck, a beach chair over my shoulder and stuff a book or my watercolors in the chair , walk down the grassy path over the back of the property and am on the beach in less than 12 minutes.

Serene setting, superbly equipped.

  • 5 of 5

The house fully lived up to its description/ photos. The owner provided us with tons of useful info especially the fun map with places to explore, and helped us understand the island's weather patterns. Our group of 7, including 5 young adults, had plenty of space for togetherness outdoors and in, and alone time in the quiet den. The lay out of rooms is great. The good-sized dining room has nice serving platters and casserole dishes. The kitchen is big enough for a group to sit on the benches while the cook, both when grilling outdoors and working in the kitchen, has company. Sitting on the comfy chaise longues and admiring the views was heaven, (we appreciated the 4 acres...no traffic noise and a very private feel.) so was bird watching each morning. We sure hope to go back next year!

Old musty house-owner a scammer with security

  • 1 of 5

The house smelled of mold and musty odor when we arrived. Exterior also moldy. Noted lots of bugs in home during our stay The beds/pillows were old and very uncomfortable. Very poor water pressure in all the showers. Bathroom situation difficult due to placement. Was willing to overlook all of this until I contacted about security deposit 3 weeks later and was told that our group "broke" her ceramic umbrella holder and that she will not be returning my security deposit I should have paid attention to previous reviews where she is accused of doing this.

Why wasn't I called right away? Not sure but stay far, far away from this property. That being said Block Island is so charming- plan many returns in the years to come.

Owner's Response: There is a procedure when a Block Island house checker or the cleaners report they found significant damage, as happened here . A $375 porcelain umbrella stand was left broken in a dozen pieces . VRBO reviewed the photos and text I supplied to them and alerted me that this tenant had bought damage insurance. That claim which was filed more slowly than it could have been is still working its way through the insurer, CSA. That a tenant who "loved the house even after arriving in pouring rain" must have misunderstood the process for security deposit return and not realized they are further protected by the VRBO guarantee and elects to trash the house online of course disturbs me. I have a long history of successful renting. I also have solid wood floors throughout which do not absorb dampness and I suggest closing windows when there is fog or rain to minimize moisture. No tenant likes to break something and lose part of a deposit. But it happens and it is to the credit of VRBO that they now offer such a good insurance policy for such a small sum. Every negative review on my property is from someone who did hundreds of dollars of damage, had a deduction for repairs and lashed out . I think VRBO is very smart to design a solution by now offering insurance and guaranteeing your satisfaction. Most tenants leave my house in great shape and I bless them. So I thank you and please know that people love the setting of my home. You can see the ocean, walk to the beach , have a private peaceful house all to yourself and enjoy a beautiful island which surrounds you . Thanks for your trust.

Spacious, comfortable house and great location

  • 4 of 5

Really enjoyed our visit. Clean, comfortable, and well equipped. The home is roomier than it seems from the online photos. The 7 of us had plenty of space to hang together or separately. Great views from the hilltop location with ocean breezes... and lots of green grass out front and in the back. We found a small trail off the backyard that led to the road then a few minute walk to Vail Beach. We also rode bikes from the house to Moheghan Bluffs, to some hiking trails, and even ventured the 2.5 miles to town one morning. We would definitely stay here again. Thanks for having us! :)

We Loved It

  • 5 of 5

My family LOVED staying here. My sister came from Illinois, my brother from Sweden, and my 91 year old dad, and myself from Massachusetts. The house was well equipped with plates, utensils, and appliances. The beds were comfortable, and the grounds well maintained. We even saw deer a couple of times. The homeowner was exceptionally pleasant to deal with. Whenever we had questions about where things were or how they worked she got right back to us. (not that we had that many questions) There are detailed instructions for the use of the major appliances, and TV. Most mornings we sat out back with coffee and listened to all the various birds. We would highly recommend this home for anyone looking to get away from the every day.

Given the lack of commercial laundry facilities on the island you can bring your own linens or rent linens from a mainland company which delivers to and picks up from the house . Baby gear can also be rented on the island from an independent widely used company . Contact details are contained in my lease for you

Do call for a ferry reservations ( 401-783-4613) for your car immediately after confirming your booking. Only the Pt Judith ferry carries cars. The New London High Speed does NOT carry cars. There are only about 250 car spaces per DAY so the biggest issue with a Block Island vacation is getting a ferry reservation for your car. Interstate Navigation starts taking reservations by phone the first business day after New Years. Book early as reservations for weekends often sell out completely by the end of February
