Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Den, 2.25 Baths, (Sleeps 8-12)

You will not forget a weekend spent at Windbeam House, 6 miles from charming Red Wing, Minnesota. Floor-to-ceiling living room windows offer spectacular views of not only Goose Lake but also the bluffs of historic Red Wing across the river. This tree-lined panorama provides breath-taking year round scenery, including miles of the Mississippi's famous fall foliage and ever changing waters. Because the house sits on the edge of the bluff above the lake, it is a perfect spot to sit and relax, watching a wide array of birds and animals, including eagles and flocks of migratory swans and pelicans in season, not to mention trains passing silently along the edge of the lake below.

This four bedroom rambler sleeps 12 with one full bath and two half baths, a family room, full kitchen and dining room. Only one hour from Minneapolis/St.Paul or Rochester, Minnesota, this home offers a retreat for groups from 2-12. And while it is hard not to be mesmerized by the view, it is also within a few miles of shopping, hiking, fishing, golf, snowshoeing and skiing. Not to mention an extensive arts community, restaurants, antique dealers, the Sheldon Theater and Treasure Island Casino.

This peaceful house is pet friendly and comfortably furnished in southwestern style. The master bedroom is equipped with a queen size bed and includes a private half bath. The other three bedrooms have double beds. Downstairs, the family room offers two full futon sofas.

Four generations of our family have come together in this home and we look forward to sharing it with you.

About Trudi Schaefer

We live on a small farm just 6 miles from Windbeam House. We purchased our farm in 1976 when the farmhouse was about to be demolished. Much of our time since then has been spent renovating the house and outbuildings and creating the many gardens that surround Windbeam Farm.

Trudi Schaefer purchased this house in 2000

Why Trudi Schaefer chose Red Wing

We inherited this property from Paul's parents in 2010. Immediately, we saw the potential for furnishing it as a guest house for the many friends and families who visit the Red Wing area. Womens Weekends Away and Fishing tournaments are two of the groups who find Windbeam House the perfect place to stay.

What makes this house unique

Practically every person that comes through the front door of Windbeam House is awed by the lovely view of the Mississippi River and the bluffs of Red Wing that greet them through the wall-to-wall windows of the living room. People tell us they sit in that room for many peaceful hours, watching the river, the birds but especially the eagles who perch in the trees below the house.

If I could give this more stars, I absolutely would. Absolutely a 10/10 - I would HIGHLY recommend!

This was hands-down the loveliest home - share I have ever had the pleasure of staying in! Trudi's hospitality, flexibility & attention to detail is absolutely impeccable. The home itself is absolutely beautiful, with a SPECTACULAR view over the bluffs - this alone would be enough to make it a memorable stay, but with the addition of all the little details like brochures for everything you could think of to do in Red Wing, two pairs of binoculars and a bird watching guide book, a multi-page binder full of all the information you would need in order to answer literally any question you might have about your stay, and fully-stocked EVERYTHING (seriously, you need extra blankets? check. forgot to bring shampoo or a blow dryer? check. need any kind of batteries for anything? check. want to have a fire? there's plenty of wood for the outside fire pit as well as dura-logs for the indoor fireplace... I could go on!), we were lacking in absolutely nothing. On top of all of this, Trudi always replied promptly to all communications and was very accommodating with our request to check out a bit later than the listed time.

I cannot stress enough how much we enjoyed our stay here!!! we will definitely be coming back again :)

Owner's Response: Thanks so much. I'm glad you had a good time, considering how cold it has been. Also, thanks for the heads up on the hot water temp. We got a plumber over there right away and he took care of it. The house is in great shape but every once in a while. . . well houses just do that. Thanks and please do come and stay again.

Wonderful home and environment for family gathering and celebration

  • 5 of 5

We just celebrated our family Thanksgiving feast and gathering at Windbeam for three days, and I'm happy to say all went well. The kitchen was adequate with a newer large gas stove for our cooking needs and had room for multiple people to move around and thru the kitchen area even when cooking was in full swing. The dining room was large enough to accommodate our family of 10 people. With three bedrooms on the first floor and two bathrooms, this worked well for an elder who does not do stairs and a family with a young baby to all be nearby. The bedroom in the basement area needed a space heater to be warm enough but once it was warm it worked well. The two additional futons and bathroom in the basement helped keep everyone comfortable and have their own personal space. The view was awesome from the living room overlooking the river valley from the bluff. We filled the bird feeder and hung suet for the local birds and were entertained with a variety of visitors to the feeders as well. Red Wing was a short distance for all our shopping needs. Trudi was readily available by phone and email to help answer any questions prior to our arrival and readily responded when there was a concern about the heat issue and directed us to the space heater when it was needed. Linens and towels were plentiful enough for our group. Also, there was parking for five cars to park- one car in the garage and the rest in the driveway. There was limited traffic as the house is on a dead end street. The home quickly felt very 'homey' and comfortable to everyone. Thanks Trudi and Paul for helping us have a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration with family this year by all being together!

Great Lake Pepin access

  • 4 of 5

Although the weather wasn't the best for a fall weekend, we enjoyed the stay at Paul & Trudi's place. The location on the east side of the river is a nice diversion to get away from the traffic in Red Wing and is perfect for access to the little towns around Lake Pepin. Their house is deceptive from the outside because it doesn't look that big, but there is so much room on the inside. There were only 4 of us and the place would easy hold a large family gathering. We really enjoyed the main room looking through all that glass at the river. There are train tracks below the lot, but by the second day the women didn't even notice the trains. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

Owner's Response: So glad you enjoyed your stay at Windbeam House. You are not alone, many people comment how about how much larger the house is once you get inside. It even took me a while to figure out that half the house sits behind the garage, making it look much smaller from the outside. We have had some very large groups stay at the house and everyone has enjoyed the amount of room they have had. Thanks for mentioning it. Please come and stay again. Now you know how many people you can bring with you!
