A private garage and private entrance surrounded by cast-iron gates .3 kilometers distance is the town of Gerace 2500 year famous for its many churches site of many concerts ,cobblestone roads and rich of shops ,of local artifacts, restaurants enjoyed by international tourists.

Archeological interest'the Magna Grecia': If interested I can arrange special tour of museum/actual archeological digs with professors, directors of museums.

Special visits to surrounding islands archelogical sightseeing can be arranged upon requests.

Gerace has over 2000 years of history. It was the site of many occupation tru the centuries, and all thoose civilizations left an imprint, including the Norman invasion that left behind the Norman castle.

Locri has a Greek anphitheather and to date performances under the stars are been given in its 2000 year od anphyteather.

The museum of Locri is well known and the center of interest of luminary personality.

Nearby Roccella hosts international jazz festivals.

The Ionian sea...the surroundings: the ionian sea is clean ,deepest blue and center of attraction for sea lovers of all ages...

Many 'Lidos' serve the clients with umbrellas ,loungers. refresments and lunch/ dinner on the water.

Some of the small restaurants have no set menus'They serve the catch of the day'.

The athmosphere is quiet and the beaches are not loud ,one can spend the day sailing, paddling ,motor boating

reading a book on the lounger ,eating on the rotonda 'Makes one feel like Onassis' as someone told me.

The Eolian islands, Sicily, are some of the many destinations within easy reach even one day escursions,

Palermo is really a jewel and is a must, along with Taormina,

Two days will take you to Erice tip of Sicily that overlooks Africa.

Scilla the site of Ulisse's boat wreck is near Reggio Calabria and is also rich of hystory and breathtaking beauty.

The food of the south: the local food is as good as it gets.

From the local gelato at Rinaldi's at the piazza del tocco in Gerace,to the fancy restaurant, the small trattoria, the pizza, the food is the delicacy and irresistible.

Do not eat too much of the appetizers, everything tastes so good you want to leave room for dessert;

Do not forget to sit out at nigth and have a granita, then sit by the 'Bombarde' the balcony to the world of Gerace

Perhaps it is the sun or the water or the ripeness of the fruit, butthe granita it is incomparable.

Strolling through the cobblestone of Gerace, it's a pleasure to grace through the barriers shops the most exquisite ceramics, linen, lace. At Christmas time the churches have manger scene; they compete with each other and they are very artistic and unique. Famous composers performed concerts in the churches at Christmas creating an atmosphere that brings you back centuries after the concerts the most delicious hot chocolate takes away the chill.

About rosanna ranieri

Years ago I went back to Italy the land I was born in and grew up.I have lived my adult life in the USA ,my home of nearly forty years . The visit tho the land i was born in, where I went to school created a feeling of yearning , an ache, that would linger and augment thru the years.I fell in love with the little house on the hill ,recognized its potential so I,convinced my cousin to sell it to me and by miracle her mother agreed to have me purchase it;she had been reluctant to sell to others so many times before...My dream came thru and with enthusiasm I proceeded to transform the Little house into Villarosa the jewel it is now.

The results exceeded any expectation:the peace of a countryside and the nearness of the attractions and activities is enough to delight the needs for tranquillity and action at the same time

Every time I visit Villarosa I feel restored ,at peace with myself, close to my roots and to the people I love and love me back.

I have some regrets in my life ,Villarosa is the culmination of my dream to reconnect,to belong.

Several guests have visited Villarosa in their quest of finding their roots, the launching pad their families left for other shores.Helping them find their roots gives me much joy.

Others come to enjoy the 'National Park of the Aspromonte',trekking, escursions tours, offer the visitors the opportunity to reconnect with nature.Cyclers come to the area from all over Europe, some have contacted us from Australia, others come for the nearby beaches, the Ionic sea all enjoy the rich medieval heritage of Gerace, and the archeological treasures of Locri.

The driveway is accessible bycar up to the front door, although a small car is recommended and the lower floor is handicapped accessible. The kitchen is open, spacious and the hutch lodges the appliances, needed for the chef at heart. The villa was recently painted and the wall decor is that of the marmorino veneziano;the two bathrooms are spacious, pristine .the garden is tiered, very private ,gated by cast iron, custom made fence: many fruit trees ,olive trees, a palm provide shade in the summer and oranges tangerines persimmons ,pomegranes and bergamot in season.olive trees provide the oil that is produced locally.

Gerace is a great town part of the 'world heritage' with many excellent restaurants, trattorias, pizzerias all few miles distance from Villarosa.

The shops are plenty and the craftsmanship is very fine ,weather you are looking for damask, linens, ceramic ,wood work, objects of art, culinary delicacies, souvenirs, home made soaps and beauty products are manufactured locally with almond oils, bergamot, olive oils.Rinaldi is a great place where the granitas are incomparable, the pastry locally made fresh every morning, the ice cream memorable , the hot chocolate to die for.

Villarosa...Unforgettable Adevnture!!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful, serene surroundings both inside and out! The wonderfully appointed interior was completely furnished, very comfortable and met all of out needs. The views from the top floor of the villa were magnificent. On the grounds of Villarosa, we found olive trees, pomegranate trees, lime trees and persimmon bushes. We found the people of Gerace and Locri to be very friendly and helpful especially since we had minimal command of the Italian language. The food and wine were thoroughly enjoyed. One of our favorite restaurants was San Souci in Locri. Another restaurant that was easy to find with great food was La Terrazza. It was just up the road from Villarosa. Found and enjoyed a local red wine called Terre Di Gerace. My husband and I ventured out on our own to find the many museums, archeological sites, and churches in Southern Italy and ,again, found people willing and able to help us find our way. We rented a small diesel, manual shift car that worked great on the very curvy roads. We found so much to do that we will need to return to this wonderful place called Villarosa!

Owner's Response: Well ,then come back to Villarosa ,Sylvia anf Jim Thank you so much for your kind review : we are delighted that your stay was satisfactory and that you are considering coming back. Glad the driving was easy ,the Medioeval roads are easierto takle with a smaller car, although as you saw,the large buses and cars negotiate the roads well. You have left many friends in South of Italy ! You have, however , only scratched the surface ,as far as many itineraries and discoveries thath this area has to offer . The patrimony of Locri and Gerace is immense ,the hystory going back several millennia ,to neolitic age . The area is part of the Magna Grecia, and ,due to it's strategic importance ,became target if many civilizations tru te centuries, from the Greecks to the Normans to the Spanish,Bizantine invasions ,that have left their impront with the consequent many sites, like the Norman castle, the various Churches museums and archaeologic renmants. So you must come back and resume your search of ancient civilizations. The food, the people ,the scents the preistine air and abundant nature is the lure that lives an indelible mark in the souls of every visitor discernible enough to choosethis particular area as a destination. Thank you for your kind words regarding Villarosa, its gardens, and its magnificent view.

Serene scenic retreat in Calabria

  • 5 of 5

Villa Rosa was a haven of scenic views. With three balconies and a separate terrace that overlooked picturesque rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves ending at the Iona Sea, there was little need to leave this marvelously equipped, comfortable, and clean villa. Everything one could think of was on hand and at the ready at this lovely vacation home. Nearby Gerace is a gem, as well. We were four adults traveling together and there was plenty of room to find a space of one's own, but lots of areas that were perfect for sharing a glass of wine or a meal together. The four of us are unanimous in recommending that others go experience this great space and lovely house. You won't be disappointed!
