About the property

Large, fully- renovated historic barn in the Berkshires

Mason Hill is a celebration of everything we love about the Berkshires. Mountain views, a rushing swimmable brook, an historic exquisitely-restored barn and outbuildings surrounded by lush forest. Mason Hill is the perfect year-round getaway for any traveler.

The post and beam barn was built in 1815 by the Mason family and retains many of its original construction features in addition to the most modern amenities. The historic Mason Hill is a wondrous getaway in the heart of the Berkshires. Situated on 8 acres, the original farmhouse is still located on the property with the adjoining post and beam barn, stables, artist studio, and cabins. The barn features a fully modern and equipped gourmet kitchen with a dual fuel oven and a large comfortable living room and bar area. The adjacent large bedroom also accommodates an extensive library. The home includes a full bath and shower, laundry facilities and an outdoor cedar- lined shower with a view of the Berkshire sky. One queen bed and one bunk in the bedroom; 2 single beds in a semi-private sleeping area enclosed by the historic indoor stable off the living room, and one double bed in a semi-private sleeping area adjacent to the kitchen. There is a large deck off the west side of the barn for casual dining or reading a book while listening to the rushing sound of Kitchen Brook--the beautiful trout stocked brook on the property. Enjoy evenings with sausages and s’mores around the large outdoor fire pit. Perfect for family summer vacations, fall foliage, winter skiing and snowmobiling, reunions and celebrations. Rental is for entire property, except the caretakers' house and adjoining studio.

About Ian & Jane

Ian & Jane are young entrepreneurs who live in New York City and Cheshire, MA. Ian works in the food industry and Jane in the photographic world. They enjoy cooking, foraging for mushrooms and wild edibles, and playing with their two doggies.

Ian & Jane purchased this barn in 2015

Why Ian & Jane chose Jiminy Peak

We fell in love with the historical aspect of the property. There are five historic structures on the property some dating back to the 1700's. Mason Hill is located alongside of the historic Cheshire Cemetery which has stunning monuments and washed away gravestones dating back also to the 1700's. The property is very spacious and private with beautiful views, sounds of the brook, and is situated in the heart of the Berkshires.

What makes this barn unique

Natural beauty, quiet, private, full gourmet kitchen, woodland trails, trout fishing in stocked brook, two additional rustic cabins and fire pit, stone and wooden meditation benches overlooking upper and lower gorge, cedar outdoor shower, 1/4 mi. to Appalachian Trail, 15 min to Jiminy Peak Ski Resort, 10 min away from Mt. Greylock

Nifty space, great location

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I spent three night here and very much enjoyed the solitude and quiet. We had a project to work on and some sightseeing to do, so this property was perfect -- short drives to Herman Melville's house (where he wrote Moby Dick) and Mt. Greylock, which Henry David Thoreau climbed and wrote about. Spent one afternoon at the stunning Mass MoCa just a half hour north. See it! The house is open and comfortable, and the scenic cemetery basically next door was great to walk through. Only minor complaints are that the wifi was "unstable" (but we planned on not using it much) and our phones (Sprint service) had irregular reception (again, not a problem, as we wanted to be away from the daily grind). The house has two air conditioners and a powerful floor fan, we ran them only at night for better sleeping -- the house does get hot during the day (mid-July), but the back porch is shady and cool. For people bringing dogs, there is a fence and gate blocking the nearby road, but just a split rail fence down the far side and a gap in the back fence down to the ravine. The yard is shared with the neighboring house that has a in-ground pool and a chicken coop, which might be a problem for some dogs. Overall, fantastic place for a 2-4 people; it would be a challenge to have 8 here because there is one bathroom, and it's through a bedroom. And FYI, West Mountain Road toward the mountain becomes gravel/ruts for a hilly, twisty, narrow stretch, so heed the GPS directions to take the longer paved route unless you want a fun/semi-scary off-road adventure on that stretch (we survived)! I would definitely come back to this place.

Fantastic vacation

  • 5 of 5

We loved everything about this property, even the occasional visit from 'Charlie' (the owners kept their dogs away from the rental, but our sons sought them out). Property is beautiful, quiet, relaxing and truly unique. Our entire family enjoyed the experience of this one of a kind property and we're glad we changed our normal rental routine.

When we first booked the property my wife was nervous that our two and four year old would be chaotic because there is no TV. On the contrary, they did not even miss a TV (and neither did we).

We'd love to share some of the images my wife took in and around your property. Thank you for the memories!

Beautifully renovated barn, peaceful location

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely wonderful time at the barn and loved checking out the beautiful rushing stream, laying in the hammock, and building a campfire and roasting s'mores. A great, peaceful Berkshires getaway. Would definitely go back.

You should know everything is basically in one big room, so there's not a ton of privacy, but that was OK for us. Some beds are in main room, with half-wall partitions that offer a bit of privacy, while the others are in the bedroom, but the only bathroom is in that room so people need to go through to use it. Still, it worked great even for us with a larger group and would be perfect for families/groups of friends.

Overall: Incredible value for pretty magical place.

nice + convenient (with dog and toddlers)

  • 5 of 5

Nice house - exactly as pictured/explained (except I do agree with the other poster that the property isn't exactly "fenced in" for dogs, but we kept ours on leash anyway, so NBD). The barn worked ok with a toddler and preschooler - only real challenges being that the only bathroom was inside the only bedroom, which was tough when the kids go to bed at 730, and there are no curtains in the bedroom which can make naps difficult. Neither was a big deal for us during our quick weekend stay. The barn is charming and well equipped. The grounds/property are gorgeous - convenient hiking close by and great location close to lots of Berkshire activities. Would stay again. Thanks!

Awesome Vacation Rental

  • 5 of 5

From inquiry to departure, the entire process was smooth and easy. Communication was excellent prior to the stay. It was not needed after arrival as everything was as promised. The Barn was easy to find and exactly as described. It was the perfect venue for a stay after a day of skiing at nearby Jiminy Peak. The kitchen was well equipped, there was plenty of reading materials and games, and there was enough linens and towels for our stay. The Barn was spotless and the heating system worked well. No complaints from any of us! We do hope to be able to return one day. Thank you for sharing your property with us.

Unique property with wonderful 'back yard'

  • 5 of 5

The barn was easy to book, find and get into when we arrived. It has lots of character and antiques but was also very clean and organized with everything we needed for a weekend getaway. The sleeping accommodations are unusual with only one private bedroom, the other two being semi private with half walls and railings. However it is exactly as described in the home information so we were expecting that and it worked fine. The best thing for us were the wonderful grounds. My husband was overjoyed to catch a fish in the stream at the bottom of the hill and the children loved exploring the woods. The location was great for going up Mt Greylock and exploring the Surounding towns of North Adams and Williamstown. We are already talking about a return trip!
