After Georgetown to the west, Capitol Hill is Washington's oldest neighborhood. In its earliest days, most of the residents were members of Congress who lived in boarding houses and dormitories surrounding the Capitol. As the neighborhood evolved, row houses replaced boarding houses and the Hill began to grow as a neighborhood filled with families, as well as Washington's who's who. As you walk around this stately neighborhood, don't be surprised if you see faces you've seen in the news. A number of senators and representatives make their home on the Hill.

In addition to the U.S. Capitol, the Hill includes other significant American landmarks such as the U.S. Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the Folger Shakespeare Library, Union Station, the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks, the Washington Naval Yard, Congressional Cemetery, Lincoln Park, and the Eastern Market. All of these sights are within easy walking distance and most are Metro-accessible. Just down the hill from the Capitol is the National Mall with all of the monuments and memorials iconic to Washington, as well as more than 10 museums and galleries of art and artifacts.

To the east of the Capitol is the Eastern Market—one of the only remaining merchant markets left in Washington. While the market bustles during the week, it is on the weekends that it acquires its character and charm as residents from all over the city and visitors from all over the world come to the market to enjoy breakfast; purchase fresh meats, produce, and breads; stroll through the adjacent flea market; and browse the latest art and jewelry crafted by local artists and artisans.

During the spring and summer months, a visit to the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks at 8th and I Streets SE will allow you to see the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team in action. This 24-man rifle platoon performs precision maneuvers with their 10.5 lb M-1 Garand rifles with fixed bayonets.

Over at the U.S. Capitol, the newly opened visitor's center allows visitors to experience the Capitol from the ground up. The center features several state statues in Emancipation Hall and a museum that chronicles the history of the U.S. Capitol from its cornerstone laying in 1789 by George Washington to the present day. Tickets for the Senate and House galleries are available here.

The Library of Congress' Jefferson Building, just across the street from the Capitol, is the world's largest repository of books and media in the world. The building is open to the public and the Renaissance and classical art are breathtaking.

These and other sites make staying on Capitol Hill a must if you're visiting Washington on business or for pleasure.

About Allen

The redhead next to me is my wife Ana.

We have 2 daughters who are grown and are on their own ( not really, if you are a parent you know) and a 14 pound Schnoodle ( he thinks he is a giant). We have been living in the DC metro area for about 36 years and absolutely love it. Washington DC is a beautiful city, it really is and for people coming here to spend their vacations or attend conferences, weddings, funerals (The Arlington Cemetery), graduations, sight seeing, festivals etc. etc. there isn't any city that offers so much.

I manage the properties and Ana tells me what to do (!!!) We are a great team and enjoy doing what we do.

Allen purchased this condo in 1987

Why Allen chose Eastern Market

This is a fully furnished apartment, very close to metro and the grocery store. Walking distance to the major sites in DC.

Cozy apartment within walking distance to the Capital Buildings.

  • 4 of 5

Very clean unit and no problems with checking in or out. In what appears to be a typical neighborhood but yet close to the Capital Buildings and the National Mall. The bus stops just up the street and there is a metro station one or two blocks away. Bedroom and bathroom are small but adequate, and the bed was comfortable. There are some great restaurants on 8th street (just 5 blocks away) and a Safeway about 3 blocks away. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!

Fabulous location for tourist for Washington DC

  • 5 of 5

We stayed 9 nights. 2 easy blocks from Metro and grocery store. Some noise from above as we were in basement apartment but not bad. Fast internet speed; my hubby was impressed. It is a basement apartment so would not recommend for anyone handicapped. Would definitely return and refer others visiting the area. The Capitol is about 2 miles away but you can see the Dome from Pennsylvania Avenue which is less than 1/2 block away. Alan was very speedy in replying to our questions.

excellent apartment. Roomey ,well equiped and convenient location

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is in an excellent location for tourists. Close to metro with 3 separate train lines so you can access almost anywhere---easily and economically. Groceries and pharmacy within a block. 20 minute walk to Capital building. Five blocks away is Mr Henry's, a restaurant with excellent live music 4 nights a week. Very well planned inside ( front and back doors). Bedroom at far end so more than one guest can get space from each other. Very clean with non carpeted floors. Everything you need.

Nice property, great location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay at this property. Great location near the Metro, which we used everyday to get around, even took it from the airport. The owners are nice to work with and always responded promptly to our questions.

Fully Equipped & Well Maintained Apartment!

  • 5 of 5

We loved this apartment and would stay again! It sits on the border of Capital Hill in a nice neighborhood! Five blocks down is 8th Street with lots of great food choices. It is super close to the metro and bus stops as well as the local grocery store and a CVS drugstore. The apartment is in the basement with a great A/C unit and a dehumidifier. It has all you need and is VERY clean! The kitchen is well equipped and well designed - full-sized refrigerator, oven, sink, ample counter space, ample dishes and cookware. The dining table seats four people comfortably (with seating at the kitchen bar as you see). You can even eat outside in the back with a table that is provided. Behind the divider is the living room with a large couch, end table, and TV. The bathroom is down the hall. The shower puts out the hot water immediately, no waiting for it to heat up. Under the sink are items like hair dryer, mirror, etc. The floors are wood throughout. The bedroom is at the end of the hall away from the living room and kitchen. There is a dresser in the closet and space for your luggage or shoes, etc. The bed is probably a queen (not sure). There is a bedstead with more space for items and a lamp. A bonus is the vertical washer/dryer behind the front entry closet. Allen was quick to respond and work with us. We were headed to Cabo but a destructive tropical storm was headed there and we found this place two days before our vacation time. This location is extremely close to the Capitol, Botanical Gardens, the Mall and anything else you want to see! We rented a car and glad we did. We drove to Annapolis, Alexandria, and other local areas as well. What a great trip and so nice to come home after a long day to this beauty. You will not be disappointed. One last thing... You are to wash and dry your towels in the washing machine before you go. So make sure to leave an hour to do that before you take off. Oh, and also to take out the trash if you are there on trash day. That's actually for your benefit - no biggie! We felt safe walking there. And, as a tidbit, if you don't want to walk on the busy, main street down to 8th Street, there is a street just behind it that runs parallel and is steps from the apartment that goes straight there and is a bit quicker and quieter. Great place!!!
