Sugar Shack Cottage is located at the bottom of a 2.5 acre estate, surrounded by a mature tropical garden. It is cooled by trade winds, shaded by trees but alight with morning sunshine. Two buildings are joined by a covered patio and wooden deck with built-in Jacuzzi, a perfect area to enjoy outdoor living including al fresco meals. The main structure comprises a bedroom with king-size bed, a small bathroom, living-room and kitchen. The second bedroom with two single beds and ensuite bathroom is separate across the patio. The well-equipped kitchen can be opened up to become an indoor/outdoor bar area. The living room sitting area can be used as a sleeper for kids. WIFI is available throughout and there is a TV, a Bose music system and DVD player.
Sugar Shack is a cozy, comfortable spot for a Caribbean holiday with a difference, a little haven in the vicinity of an array of possible activities.
Sugar Shack History: We completed the construction of our house on a 2.5 acre plot on the hill in 1989 and built the Sugar Shack at the bottom of the garden in 1994. It started out as a one-room guest house for our visitors and grew to suit the needs of our overseas family and friends. The second bedroom and bathroom have just been added. We are only now starting to rent the property because we are retired and looking for ways to keep busy and stay in touch with the world.
Points of Interest: There is only a garden-view from the cottage but by walking to the top of the same garden one can enjoy the ever-changing spectacle of sunsets. Sugar Shack is private and yet within easy access of a large variety of activities. Dickenson Bay is a 5-minute walk (downhill!). It is the location of Rex Halcyon Cove, Sandals, Antigua Village, Siboney and Buccaneer Beach Club. Watersport facilities such as jet- and water-skiing, several restaurants, a Casino and a nightclub are available to visitors who do not stay at any of the hotels. We are within 5 - 10 minutes by car from town, a giant new supermarket, an 8-theater Cinemaplex and three shopping centers. 10 minutes away, Cedar Valley, an 18-hole Golf course welcomes visitors daily.
Do you love dogs?: Our five dogs are kept on the other side of the fence unless you request their company. They are not allowed on the patio or deck of the Cottage but will gladly come and visit in the garden if you wish.
We came to Antigua from Switzerland on behalf of my husband's employer over 30 years ago and fell in love with the Caribbean way of life, particularly the temperate climate. We are now retired and finding ways to stay in touch with the world.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 1994

The cottage is cozy and convenient and although it can sleep 4 adults and 2 kids, we recommend a maximum of 4 for a comfortable stay.

It takes little time to realize that a a magical place like Sugarshack is easily found online. We stayed 10 days with our friends and enjoyed every single moment spent there. The feel of leisure and beauty mixed together to create a perfect vacation atmosphere. The house was design such as to provide privacy for all the individual families. The common kitchen was supplied with everything you needed to prepare your favourite meal. The tap water is properly filtered and drinkable. We drank from the tap, although our friends bought bottles. For the lovers of barbecue, yes, there was one on the patio next to the jacuzzi tub. For movie fans, there was Netflix, plus wifi of course. This breezy house was coordinated to the smallest detail by the elegant taste of our European hostess. I would not exaggerate if I were to say that I felt in paradise throughout all my stay.
We rented a car only for some days because the Dickenson Bay and beach, ( Sandals resort), followed by many other serene beaches were within walking distance. There were a few restaurants close by and a small convenience store. One of the best and most reasonably priced supermarkets was exactly a 20 minute walk on the road towards St. John's. We were craving walking, so for us going to the grocery store was very enjoyable. The car rental was by the beach, where taxis were also available.
Our most favourite moments though were drinking coffee and observing the stunning views of the bay from a patio built on the hill. For us the question of where we are going to stay if we go to Antigua again has only one answer, Sugarshack.

The cottage looks exactly as it is portrayed in the photos. Americans expect a lot of conveniences when traveling overseas and this cottage does not disappoint. From filtered water to the 120 voltage outlets (converter provided for guests from other countries), provided cell phone and house phone, spotless interior inside as well as out, the cottage more than lives up to the most exacting standards. The property is located on what we thought was the best part of the island with many nearby beautiful beaches. Ilse, the owner, could not be more helpful, kind or gracious to her guests. She makes you feel like family! Her staff, namely Sandra and Gerard were wonderful as well. The cottage feels like an oasis...close to everything, yet calm and serene after a day of exploring. We spent many mornings and evenings on the welcoming deck enjoying the perfect weather and wonderful Jacuzzi. We could not imagine a better place to stay on the island than the Sugar Shack! Thanks again Ilse and Bill for sharing your beautiful property with us!
We (2 couples) stayed at the Sugar Shack from Jan 29 - Feb 8. The cottage had pretty much everything you needed to do your cooking, the only thing missing was a toaster, the table top oven just took too long. Isle & Bill were great hosts & we're always available to answer any questions we had.
Dickenson Bay was close by & we enjoyed walking around & usually hung out at Tony's bar down at Dickenson beach.
Hope to someday visit again!
Excellent place, clean, good position, peace, kindness of Ilse and Bill, ideal for a couple but also for a family ( we were with our two daughters of 5 and 12 ) absolutely the best place to stay in Antigua!!!Thanks again for all; we never forget you especially your beautiful dogs and the aloe you prepared us!!!We really had wonderful time in your cottage thanks thanks again
As soon as we set foot in Sugarshack we knew we'd hit the nail on the head. My husband and I and our two adult children had everything we needed for a relaxing and carefree holiday. The layout of the cottage was perfect, giving the kids their own space across the breezeway with ample living space in the main area for all of us. Ilse and Bill were fantastic hosts; always accessible and helpful and just close enough if we needed anything. All in all it was a perfect place for our precious family time. We stayed for two weeks and quickly fell into a comfortable routine with many evenings cooking dinner "at home" and enjoying the peace and quiet of the property. Antigua is our favorite place and Sugarshack made it even better. Thankyou Ilse and Bill, we will surely see you again 😍
Along with my best friend we returned to the Sugar Shack for a couple of weeks of chilling out. Perfect for walking to a beautiful beach, with bars and restaurants close by. Easy access to all parts of the island. Ilse and Bill again were brilliant with their welcome and knowledge of the island. Have returned home ready to face Christmas !
