Apartment description
This apartment will offer you insight into the history of Amsterdam itself. It was built over 400 years ago and still boasts many of its original characteristics. The Authentic Jordaan is located on the Binnen Wieringerstraat, in the historic centre of Amsterdam. Not much can be found about this nameless house in the archives of Amsterdam. It is built against the old sea dike that protected Amsterdam in the times before the Oranjesluis or the Aflsuitdijk were built.
On one side of this charming little street connects to the Brouwersgracht (Brewers canal) and on the other side it connects to the Haarlemmerstraat. This historic house was built around 1620. It is one of the few houses that still boast its original gable, which is a classical renaissance crow-stepped gable; this is a stair-step type of design at the top of the triangular gable-end of a building.
Not only the gable is still original, the interior with its solid oak beams as well as the steep staircases are original. It is not hard to imagine a Dutch merchant family doing business from this very location.
From the hallway the first set of stairs leads to the first floor of the house. Every room in the house has its own adjustable radiators, it is quite easy to keep this house warm and comfortable in winter. As each room also has windows, it is quite easy to create a nice breeze in the house cooling it down in the summer. There are also fans available on the rare summer days that it is actually tropical.
On the first floor is the living/dining/kitchen. This floor has a beautiful wooden floor as well as beams supporting the floor above. In the front (street side) of this floor there is a spacious living area with sofa’s and widescreen SMART TV. This is a great area to relax.
Away from the street there is a large dining table in the back of this floor. You will find an open kitchen. The kitchen is fully equipped including a fridge, dishwasher, oven, microwave, kettle, coffeemaker and so on.
It is not hard to imagine enjoying a spending an evening with a good diner and equally good conversations at the dining table with dimmed light shining from the chandelier. With ample heating present, the smells from the kitchen and friends swapping stories at the table, this is typically what the Dutch will call “gezellig”. The word “gezellig” is considered to be an example of untranslatability, and is one of the hardest words to translate. Some consider the word to encompass the heart of Dutch culture.
The back-house is a more recent addition to the building and is most likely only 200 years old. In the back house we have installed a washing machine/dryer as well as a full bathroom with bath tub, standing shower, toilet and double vanity sink.
One floor up with the beautiful open stairs there is the floor with two bedrooms, a bathroom and a separate toilet. There is one (twins) in the back, and the master bedroom in the front on the street side (optional with twins, on request). The bedrooms do not have attic rooms above them so you can see the beams that support the pointed roof 4 meters higher. On this floor located in between the two bedrooms is the bathroom with a sink and a rain shower, there is also a separate toilet.
The beautiful antique wooden roof-beams are visible here, instilling one with a deep sense of history that is present throughout the entire house.

Location description
The house is built against the old sea dike that protected Amsterdam. On one side of this charming little street there is the Brouwersgracht (brewers canal) and on the other side there is the Haarlemmerstraat.
From the Brouwersgracht one has access to the entire canal ring and this is a great spot to relax and watch the boats go by. The many restaurants and bars in the canal ring and Jordaan area are just a few minutes walking away.
The Haarlemmerstraat is a shopping street with many boutique shops and this street has been voted as the best shopping street of the Netherlands for three years running, due to its wide variety of shops, boutiques, cafes, restaurants, galleries and antique shops.

I grew up in the hospitality business, with my parents running hotels and/or restaurants. Since 2005 I have been actively offering short stay apartment rentals in Amsterdam. In 2008 I purchased the Sonnenberg and have been managing the property ever since.
I love to share my experience of the wonderful city of Amsterdam. In my opinion the best way to see the city is with friends on an open canal boat on a nice day or evening.
Wytse purchased this apartment in 2007
I live in this property myself, or at least on the ground floor, the top house is all Authentic Jordaan. The awesome thing about the area is that it still has the unique charm of a small time neighborhood, and everybody knows each other.

Allez-y :)
This is a TRUE Amsterdam experience, the property is right in the center of Amsterdam with all of the attractions at walking distance. The Haarlemmerstraat offers great boutique shopping and plenty of restaurants, and the Jordaan and canals are right at your doorstep. The owner is very responsive and the place was cleaned well upon our arrival.
Highly recommend.
We had a fantastic stay at Authentic Jordaan Apartment during the summer. We were 4 adults and 3 children (6, 5 and 3 years). Check-in and communication with Wytse was very easy and the apartment was well equipped and furnished. The children loved the novelty of climbing up and down the traditional steep stairs and the open plan kitchen-dining-lounge area was perfect for our family holiday. The traditional style of the house was really endearing - our group was from the UK and Australia so we loved being in a traditional Amsterdam house. The location was in a great spot for transport links around Amsterdam and also for excursions out of the city and getting to the airport. Plenty of supermarkets, shops and restaurants on your doorstep too. Highly recommend for groups and families too.
This is a great apartment in an excellent location. The place is old but neat and well-kept, and is walking distance to the canals, the train station, and a bunch of wonderful restaurants and shops. We had a great time staying there and wished we were there for longer. I highly recommend eating breakfast at Vinnies (which is literally a stones throw away). We didn't ride bikes, but there is a bike rental place next door if you're interested. Wytse was waiting for us at the apartment when we got there and was very nice and helpful with our questions. Highly recommended.
Very nice appartment, with all necessities !!
Very well located, in a dynamic neighborhood.
Nevertheless, the bathroom is very small, and we told us to be ready at 11h the last day but nobody came in reality to take the keys. We finally left the house with the keys in it only after I contact the person in charge of arrivals and departures who said to me that he would come around 2 hours later.
A great apartment in a great city. Wyste is a magnificent host who was prompt to meet us and contactable throughout our stay. When I return to the city I will always look first to see if Wyste's apartment is free to use again.
The property is walking distance from the train station, off a Main Street with bio supermarkets and cute shops. We had a group of 7 girls, clean and enough beds. Couldn't get the cooker hob to work but other than that is was ideal for what we were looking for. Only 1 bathroom which was tiny, but even with 7 girls we managed to make it work. Would stay there again.
Within 400 meters of the apartment you can find many shops and restaurants. The shops are all of a boutique type, so no usual suspects in this area. The restaurants vary from good value student restaurants to top of the bill, and from Tibetan cuisine to soul food, from breakfast to deli take outs.
For children and adults of all ages there are two playgrounds in the direct area, with climbing racks, swings, sandboxes, football pitch and basketball court. Must see Museums within about 15-20 minutes walking/tram include; Anne Frank house, Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam Historical Museum and Canal House Museum. But there are at least 30 or 40 other museums nearby that are also worth visiting.
Without writing down an entire guide to the city of Amsterdam, this location will give you an excellent base to discover the many aspects of this world famous cosmopolitan city.
