About the property

Great for Families and Groups and Gorgeous Canal Views and Best Location in Town

Sonnenberg is located on the Herengracht, in the historic centre of Amsterdam. Surrounded by the famous nine-streets, this historic canal house was built in 1649 for the Sonnenberg family. It is one of the few houses that still boast its original gable, which is a classical renaissance crow-stepped gable; this is a stair-step type of design at the top of the triangular gable-end of a building.

Not only the gable is still original, the interior with its solid oak beams as well as the winding staircase are original. It is not hard to imagine this Dutch merchant family doing business from this very location. This family remained owners of this historic canal house well into the 19th century, and perhaps the heirs of these Sonnenberg’s are the same Sonnenberg’s as those who are among the ten richest families of the Netherlands.

Please note that we will never ask for a bank transfer as a form of payment. When booking a vacation rental always make sure to protect yourselves and make the payment with a credit or debit card.

Sonnenberg - Description

This apartment is located on two floors. Two flights of stairs are circular and one is a straight flight. One enters the Sonnenberg apartment on the beletage, after climbing a set of stone stairs of half a floor level. All floors have excellent views of the canals, and there is a bench on the porch as well as one on the canal side.

Behind the front door there is a hallway to the first set of circular stairs leading to a hallway on the first floor of the house. Practically every room in the house has its own adjustable radiators, it is quite easy to keep this house warm and comfortable in winter. As each room also has windows, it is quite easy to create a nice breeze in the house cooling it down in the summer. There are also fans available on the rare summer days that it is actually hot.

On the first floor there is a toilet in the hallway, and a door to the living/dining room. This floor has a beautiful wooden floor as well as beams supporting the floor above. In the front (canal side) of this floor there is a spacious living area with sofa’s (one is a sleeping sofa) and TV. This is a great area to relax after or before a day of exploring all the sights of Amsterdam. You will find an open kitchen and a large dining table in the back of the floor. The kitchen is fully equipped except for a dishwasher.

It is not hard to imagine enjoying a spending an evening with a good diner and equally good conversations at the dining table with dimmed light shining from the chandelier. With ample heating present, the smells from the kitchen and friends swapping stories at the table, this is typically what the Dutch will call “gezellig”. The word “gezellig” is considered to be an example of untranslatability, and is one of the hardest words to translate. Some consider the word to encompass the heart of Dutch culture.

One floor up with the circular staircase there is the floor with one bedroom (twins) in the front, with canal views and the master bedroom in the back (optional with twins, on request). On this floor located in between the two bedrooms is the bathroom, with a toilet, sink, and a bath with shower. The front bedroom has a carpeted floor and the back bedroom a wooden floor, the bathroom floor is marble.

Location description

The Sonnenberg is located in the “nine streets” area. The nine streets area is well known for its plentiful boutique shops, many restaurants, and its beautiful canals. This area is comprised of nine narrow streets running perpendicular with the four major canals (Singel, Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht) of the canal belt. It is distinctly different from other shopping districts as there is a large diversity of privately owned shops and specialized shops.

Nearby points of interest

•9 Streets Area - 0 minutes walking

•Flower Market - 2 minutes walking

•Spui – 2 minutes walking

•Dam Square – 3 minutes walking

•Jordaan – 5 minutes walking

•Westerkerk/Anne Frank - 5 minutes walking

•Rembrandt plein - 6 minutes walking

•Centraal Station – 15 minutes walking

•Leidseplein - 15 minutes walking

•Nieuwmarkt - 15 minutes walking

This apartment has 2 internal flights. From street level to the entrance there is a short stone flight of stairs up to the front door. From here there is a circular flight of stairs to the Living/kitchen level. The circular staircase continues up to a floor with 2 bedrooms and the full bathroom. The stairs are steep and narrow, as is typical for a 400 year old house. However with closed doors stairs are not accessible.

I personally meet my guests at the apartment to make sure they settle in alright. During the stay I am always available, and many times organize boat tours or advise my guests on special events during their stay.

The view from the apartment of the most beautiful canal is already awesome. But to be in the nine-streets area of the city means the coolest shops and restaurants are a literal stones-throw away.

From this location no sight is more than 15 minutes away by foot. There is access to more than a dozen tram-lines and bus-lines within 3 minutes walking.

About Wytse

I grew up in the hospitality business, with my parents running hotels and/or restaurants.

I love to share my experience of the wonderful city of Amsterdam. In my opinion the best way to see the city is with friends on an open canal boat on a nice day or evening.

Wytse purchased this apartment in 2008

Why Wytse chose Grachtengordel

The location is one of the most central in the city, and on top of that the property catches some great sun in the afternoon and is located on the most beautiful part of the most beautiful canal of the city.

What makes this apartment unique

- location

- view

- afternoon sun

- character of the building itself

Guestbook comments from the manager

Perfect Apartment, Perfect Location.

This was our first trip to Amsterdam and staying in this beautiful apartment made our trip extra special. The apartment is bright, spacious and full of character, with a lovely window seat overlooking the canal. The apartment has everything we needed, including good wi-fi and was spotlessly clean. The area is full of lovely shops and restaurants but yet is quiet and very safe. We walked easily to all the major tourist sights, though there is a tram stop nearby if you don’t feel like walking. The owner, Wytse, was very friendly and helpful, and gave us lots of advice on places to eat and visit. We are already looking forward to staying here again on our next visit.

Great clean property in lovely picturesque area, with all amenities on the doorstep.

  • 5 of 5

Great few days stay at Wytse's property at Sonnenborg. He greeted us and went through the rules of the property and made us feel welcome. Property is well laid out and has a relaxing lounge and kitchen area. Bedrooms are upstairs and are more. Than ample, one brighter and with a view of the canal.

Shops and restaurants within walking distance and museums just a few minutes further.

It was equally great coming to a nice place as it was discovering Amsterdam and all its attractions.

The home was simply amazing!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our experience exceeded any expectations!! The home is beautiful with charming window seats sitting canal side allows for wonderful views. The location to everything is premier (shopping, food, museums, etc). And the finishes in the home are all updated and impeccably clean. We were greeted at the home initial by Wyste who gave us all the info we needed on how things function in the home and the surrounding area, which was extremely helpful. The home, the location, the service all deserve more than 5 stars!

Wonderful base for family trip to Amsterdam

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I and his 14- and 13-year-old teenagers had a great time in this apartment. The kids' grandparents were also staying in Amsterdam, in a hotel, and said Wytse's place might convert them to try apartments next time! It was very cold outside but the apartment was warm and cosy, but with plenty of space for us all to do our own thing some of the time. We cooked dinner in the apartment one night, and supermarkets are located close by for breakfast supplies etc. There isn't a dishwasher and the cooking facilities are slightly limited by space (e.g. convection microwave rather than an oven), so I wouldn't necessarily cook here every night, but it was great for a change and to enjoy the apartment itself. As others have said, the location is fantastic, being in the Nine Streets and so close to the centre. I would definitely stay here again and recommend to others. Thanks Wytse (and your family!) for all your help.

Become Part of the Neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at the Sonnenberg Apartment. Wytse was a great host and his apartment was a special place. The apartment itself was just what you would hope it would be with a cozy, historical feel. It was perfect for our family of four with two very comfortable bedrooms and a shared bath. The location couldn't have been better as you are right in the middle of shopping, restaurants and sightseeing. We walked to everything - Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Heineken Experience, etc... Also, it was great to drink my morning coffee while looking out the large windows at the bikes and boat traffic in the canal. I am hopeful we will be back again someday. It was the perfect place to be to experience Amsterdam.

Beautiful historic canal house in ideal location

  • 5 of 5

My husband, 14-year-old daughter and I truly enjoyed every moment of our stay in this charming apartment while visiting Amsterdam from the States. It was the perfect amount of space for us, with two levels - living area, kitchen, dining and powder room on one level and two bedrooms and full bathroom upstairs. The apartment was clean and well maintained; exactly as shown in the photos. The location couldn't be beat. We've rented an apartment in Amsterdam once before, and while we thought that location was wonderful, this was even better. We spent 6 days exploring the city, and were able to walk everywhere. Wytse, the host, lives downstairs, so it was nice to know he was readily available if we needed something; however, there were absolutely no issues so we didn't have to call on him. Wytse is friendly and knowledgable, giving us tips to the city when we checked in, and being there to see us off when we checked out. Highly recommend this apartment! My daughter has already asked if we can stay there again the next time we visit Amsterdam.

This apartment is located on the most beautiful part of the Herengracht Canal within the Nine-Streets area. Within 400 meters of the apartment you can find many shops and restaurants. The shops are all of a boutique type, so no usual suspects in this area. The restaurants vary from good value student restaurants to top of the bill, and from Tibetan cuisine to soul food, from breakfast to deli take outs.

For children and adults of all ages there is a playground in the direct area, with climbing racks, swings. Must see Museums within about 15-20 minutes walking/tram include; Anne Frank house, Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum, Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam Historical Museum and Canal House Museum. But there are at least 30 or 40 other museums nearby that are also worth visiting.

Without writing down an entire guide to the city of Amsterdam, this location will give you an excellent base to discover the many aspects of this world famous cosmopolitan city.
