About Charlie and Kathy Zigler

Our family of three live in Illinois where we have resided in our same home for 30 years. Charlie is a retired carpenter where he worked for the same company for 33 years. Kathy is a Medical Lab Technician, at one of the areas largest hospitals, and Mara is a college student, studying to be a strength and conditioning coach. Time spent together and with other family and friends is the most important thing to us. Happily ever After provides us the privacy and fun we need to do this.

Charlie and Kathy Zigler purchased this cabin in 2011

Why Charlie and Kathy Zigler chose Gatlinburg

When we visited the Smoky Mountains for the first time a few years ago, we decided then that we wanted to be able to spend more time and possibly retire to this Beautiful, Magnificent, area. After searching during many trips back to the area, we knew immediately when we found our cabin that it was the perfect cabin for us. Happily ever After is not perched directly on the edge of a mountain, it has a yard with a park-like setting complete with patio and picnic table. We feel close to our values here and have the privacy we desire. We are able to spend time together without any outside pressures, or if we want, we can join the many area activities, just minutes away, where we have met people from all around the world.

What makes this cabin unique

We knew after purchasing our cabin that it needed a little tender loving care to make it that special place in other peoples hearts, as it was in ours. We knew immediately that we wanted to enlist the help of a wood-carver friend we had met on one of our trips. Working with him, we created that fairy-tale cabin that had developed in our hearts. Happily ever After is trimmed out in hand carved trim, featuring many of the animals and birds that you will see in the Smoky Mountains. Only Good-Memories can be made at Our 'Happily ever After'!

A little bit of heaven

  • 5 of 5

The property is immaculately clean, tastefully decorated, ideally situated right out of the main drag and just minutes to the entrance of Smokey Mountain National Park.

We truly loved our relaxing stay and encourage others to stay here!

The owners' care and concern are evident, all switches are clearly marked, as are any details to the cabin. The three decks offer delightful morning views and fresh mountain air. The hot tub is a perfect way to end a day of hiking, visitng wineries, hitting the Arts and Craft tour area, or just strolling down the main strip of the town. The pool table, Foosball table and board games are great additions also. This cabin is wonderful for familes, could easily house two couples with plenty of privacy, a girls getaway, you name it. Gatlinburg can be overly commercial, but the owner gave welcome tips to avoid that area. Don't be concerned about the fire of 2016, the attractions are all running, the views are beautiful and you will hardly notice the hard hit areas. I highly recommend the aquarium--excellent for the little ones but educational and entertaining for all ages. I suggest Crocketts for breakfast--well worth the wait. For dinner, Calgouns or a bit off the beaten path: Crystalle Creek Restaurant.

Arrive in daylight for Happily Ever After as the roads are STEEP and tight, but you soon become accustomed to them. Relax and enjoy!

What More Could You Wish For?

  • 5 of 5

Rustic charm, yet high-end finishes. Tucked away in the mountains, yet a hop, skip, and a jump (complete with hair-pin turns) from Gatlinburg and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park entrance. The first thing we noticed when looking at the photos of Happily Ever After was the bear decor. Too many? Yet when we arrived, it was fun to discover bears in every nook and cranny. This place felt like home, very comfortable, but certainly not worn; everything is new and beautiful. The view from the top deck is spectacular, with the sunset colors reflecting off the mountains. Plenty of places to sit and relax inside and out, and don't forget to soak in the hot tub after a long day of hiking. You could easily whip up a meal in the kitchen if you wanted to avoid going into town. The charcoal grill is the type you see in a city park, a metal grate on a pole anchored in the ground, what you need with bears around, I suppose, but there has been a no-burn rule since the big fire, November 2016. There is a web address posted on the door so you can check whether the ban has been lifted before you grill.

Reluctantly, we chose not to stay a second night because Hurricane Irma closed the national park at noon on 9/11. Had there not been the threat of losing power and/or blocked roads from fallen trees, we might have ridden out the storm, but the beautiful mountains are the main draw for us, certainly not shopping. As it was, we had a great stay. I have to add that exiting the driveway is not for the faint of heart. Also, the nearby Chalet Village Market is definitely just a small convenience store with prices to match plus indifferent service. They did redeem themselves with a pretty good burger and fries carry out, though. There's a small deli counter, too. As for Happily Ever After, though, staying there was just like a fairy tale.

Wonderful vacation

  • 5 of 5

My family & I loved the Happily Ever After cabin. The photo that appears on the website is exactly true to its quaintness. I felt so at home & peaceful. We all enjoyed just about every amenity this cabin had to offer.

The Jacuzzi, the game room, the family room, The kitchen, & of course the bedrooms, were all put to use. We purchased some groceries that were ready made & ate while we were out most days, & therefore we did not BBQ. We felt a true sense of respect for our surroundings while journeying throughout the Smokies. This is definitely a do over, absolutely amazing stay. Thank You for sharing your cabin with us.

Great Place for Family Vacation

  • 4 of 5

We took our two younger kids (4 and 6) on a 4 day weekend getaway to Happily Ever After. They had a blast! It was extremely close to Ober Gatlinburg, which we went there to go snow tubing and ride the Mountain Coaster. It is also a short drive to downtown. The beds were big and comfortable. The hot tub was great after a long day of hiking and walking around town. The view from the deck is outstanding and waking up to see that same view from the loft bed was an unexpected treat. As others have written, the driveway is harder to get into if you are coming downhill. Also, there wasn't any bedding in the coffee table for the pullout couch as indicated (only pillows). We didn't need it, we just noticed when we were looking for an extra blanket one night.

Beautiful Cabin!

  • 3 of 5

My family and I had a GREAT vacation in this cabin. I only rated it 3 stars because I spoke to the owner about the privacy of the cabin and was led to believe that you were more secluded on the back decks than you actually are from other neighbors. And we love playing pool, but due to the confined space of the room and the pool cues that need repaired or replaced you are unable to play a serious game The cabin though was decorated and set up perfectly, We were really impressed and loved are stay.

Owner's Response: Dear Ben, We are glad that you had a Great vacation, but are sorry that you did were not 100% happy. Compared to many other cabins in the area, our back decks are quite private. We have never experienced noise or other people that we could see from the hot tub. We were there in December, and repaired/replaced all of the pool cues. I will have our caretaker check them, again. Thank you for choosing Happily ever After! With Kindest Regards, Charlie, Kathy and Mara
