Montserrat is the perfect, secluded getaway. Stay at Nice Diggs - a relaxing retreat for 4 adults and 2 children.
Nice Diggs is a family-owned villa named after our step-grandfather, Frank Diggs, who built this dream retirement home in the 1980's. We have been fortunate to vacation at this villa and escape the fast paced city life. With Montserrat's active volcano since 1995, the island has very little tourism but a vibrant island culture with slogans like 'Still here...Still nice'
Nice Diggs is a comfortable 2 bedroom, 3 bath home on a lovely landscaped lot on Runaway Circle. The large 'L' shaped pool is perfect for laps, or just relaxing in the shallow area enjoying the Caribbean sun. The spacious veranda has comfy furniture, and the view is amazing - the islands of Redonda and Nevis are straight ahead!
Inside this home exudes older charm, with a large master bedroom and 2 bathrooms (one of these also opens out onto the veranda if desired), and entered from the veranda on the opposite side of the villa is the second smaller bedroom and bath. Because of the layout this second bedroom is not good for people with small children, but perfect for another couple or in-laws!
There is a small third bedroom with 2 twin beds in the ground level.
The kitchen opens out onto the patio/veranda, and there is a large combo living/dining room.
I grew up in Buffalo, NY. I now live in Cambridge, MA and work at Harvard. My parents manage the villa and travel there once a year. My sister and her husband live in Brooklyn, NY.
We rented Nice Diggs on our second visit to Montserrat, and it was all we hoped for and more. The photos show what a beautiful home this is, but cannot convey the sense of peace, fun and well-being we experienced while there. Owner Carey was so gracious and helpful in answering all our questions, and even filling us in on their family's history with Montserrat, making us feel even more at home when we got there. The villa is well equipped, we had everything we could possibly need. The veranda was where we spent most of our time while in, marveling at the view of Redonda and Nevis and watching the occasional boats pass by. The pool also got much use, day and night.
Montserrat is a magical island, so different from any other Caribbean location. The people are amazing and kind, it is so easy to make friends everywhere you go. The St. Patrick's week events we attended, including street parties and the Montserrat African Music Festival in Salem were joyously fun. Snorkeling at Woodlands beach was also a highlight, the reef off the cliffs to the south of the beach are teeming with healthy coral and life, including sea turtles. The volcano is a major draw for me, but it was nice to see Miss Soufriere behaving herself for the good people of Montserrat after our exciting 2010 introduction. Montserrat is a paradise, and Nice Diggs made the perfect paradise home!
We fell in love with this property just looking at the website. We arrived just after dark, having been picked up at the airport by Winston, so we didn't get a chance to really look at things until the next morning. Our first day began as we stepped out to the patio and were greeted by the first of many rainbows that we were to enjoy during our thirteen day stay. Setting apart the rainbow, the view from the patio is just lovely; the Caribbean, Redonda, and Nevis in the distance. The pool is much bigger than we expected from the photos, perfect for doing laps, if one is so inclined. Everything one needs to cook is right there in the well equipped kitchen. Our one regret is that neither of our two sons and their families were able to join us for a visit. There would have been plenty of room for them.
We loved the island; very laid back with welcoming people. We never had the least bit of worry about our personal security. Ellie and I would like to thank Carey Anderson and her husband for sharing their wonderful home with us. We've rented homes through Homeaway many times and been quite happy with just about all of them. This one will go to the top of our list, along with a couple of others. For people reading this review, the pictures on the website are quite good and, as I said at the beginning, they attracted us to the property, but they really don't do it justice. Unlike most things in life, the reality is better than the depiction.
Montserrat is an island getaway unlike any other - untouched, beautiful, scenic... perfect place for a couple or older family to safely explore, hike, swim, read, or just relax. Montserrat is a jewel because it doesn't cater to the average tourist. No casinos, nightclubs, all-inclusive resorts. Montserrat's weather is perfect - warm sunshine, no bugs, always a light breeze, and the occasional quick rainfall passing through.
