When Laurel and I were married in 1994, and I moved from Wahoo, Nebraska, near Omaha, to a cattle ranch in northwest Kansas, I knew I had found my Paradise, In 1880,Laurel's grandparents Enoch and Rebecca Fox, homesteaded the first 180 acres of Goddard Ranch where they raised corn and started buying cattle. Now Goddard Ranch consists of over 3,500 acres of pasture and farm land and ,in the same tradition of Enoch and Rebecca, is still a working ranch. When I first came here, I found the open prairie, rolling pasture land, wild flowers, creeks, ponds and wildlife filled my soul with serenity. I loved the ranch so much that I wanted to share the experience and told Laurel what we needed was a guest house for friends and relatives when they came to visit. One Christmas I had a Christmas card on the tree from my stepson, John. Inside I found a picture of a very old, ugly house with the caption, "Your next project. Merry Christmas!" John moved the old, ugly house to our ranch and we started the renovation. That was 10 years, two additions and many gallons of paint ago. Now we can boost of a very beautiful lodge that sits on the side of a hill, with beautiful trees surrouonding it and pasture land as far as the eye can see. Inside is a very spaceous great room, 20x32 feet, that is off from the kitchen and dinning room. There are two bedrooms with a twin bed and bunkbed in each bedroom. A new couch that pull out to a queen size bed with a 7inch mattress in the great room. There are also 2 twin size air mattresses and one queen size mattress available. There are 2 bathrooms, laundry room with washer/dryer and a cabinet with a double sink. All bath towels, linens, dish towels and laundry supplies are included. The kitchen has a stove, refrigator, microwave, dishwasher all pots and pans, dishes, silverware and the cabinets are stocked with the all staples. Cable TV and wireless internet is supplied. Out the front door from the porch, you can watch the horses in the pasture and the cattle grazing over the hill. If you walk up the hill from the back yard, you will find the fishing pond or go about 5 miles down the road to Antelope Lake to fish. You can follow the creek and look for deer antlers, hunt for arrowheads, hike, ride a horse, watch the sunrise and sunset and at night see the panorama of stars while enjoying roasting hotdogs and marshmellows over a campfire. You will never see as many stars shinning at night than out in the open prairie. If you are traveling with horses, we have a fenced in pasture and a barn to board them. If you are a history buff, we have the Indian effigy,Penokee Man, on our land and will take you to see where he lives after almost 1000 years. Near here is one of the last Indian/Calvery shootouts and our museum in Hill City is full of the vast history of this area. My husband, Laurel, loves to tell the stories of the land when his grandparents homesteaded the first 180 arces. In the last 8 years Seven 2 Bar has hosted people from India, Ukraine, Italy and from all over the United States. Our lodge is available for weekend get-a-ways, vacations by the week or month, hunting in the spring and fall, family runion, class reunions, or just to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. We offer guided turkey and pheasant hunts. Our guides are very experienced and have trained hunting dogs for your pheasant hunt. I offer home cooked meals and make everything from scratch.

Come and visit us and see the living history of Goddard Ranch at Seven 2 Bar Adventures.

About Mary Godddard

I've always been a small town girl. My hometown is Grand Island, Nebr. and that's the largest city I've ever lived in. For many years Ilived in Wahoo, Nebr. and that's where my children were raised and where I owned and operated a very successful beauty salon. In 1993 I had the good fortune to meet Laurel Goddard, I sold my salon to on one of my stylists and in 1994 married Laurel and moved to northwest Kansas where his cattle ranch was located. From Wahoo, Neb. 36 miles west of Omaha, to a ranch 4 1/2 hours from any major city was quite an adjustment, but I had found my paradise. I found out the business of ranching and farming is not only a job, but a way of life. The people who live here take care of their land and are fiercely protective of it. I learned to ride a horse, move cattle, bottle feed a calf, and fix fence. I went from one house cat to 15 farm cats, give or take a few, and our dog Nacho. We raise a garden, can fruits and vegetables, and make homemade jams from wild sand plums and grapes. I love the small town of Morland, 7 miles from the ranch where you can really get a homemade meal at the Prairie Junction Cafe. I work in the beauty salon, Charlene's Cut and Curl, a couple of days a week. That salon has customers from every town in a 30 mile radius. Morland refuses to die and the people of the town work together to keep it alive. We are just a few months from re-opening our country grocery store which will have a taste of the past and convinces of the modern day. We know our neighbors up and down the country road and are happy to see them pull into the driveway. Some people would find it difficult to live 4 1/2 hours form any major airport, but not me. I go to Italy almost every year to see my cousins, or San Francisco to see my daughter. We can get anywhere from here and here is where life is good.. We are free here and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. Come and see what I'm talking about. We're waiting for you. Mary

Cousin Weekend

  • 5 of 5

Five of us female cousins wanted a get away weekend at a location centrally located for all of us. I found the Goddard cabin on VRBO, and it was amazing. Just outside of Penokee and Hill City, it was secluded and quiet. The cabin was clean, comfortable, inviting, stocked with everything you need, just bring your food. Owners Mary and Laural are wonderful, friendly people. We had a great time and we be going back again.

Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Goddard Ranch during Spring turkey season in late April/early May 2015. I had TONS of questions for Mary before we booked the reservation and leading up to our arrival because we were bringing our wives and kids this year. Mary was awesome to work with and promptly answered all my questions which made me feel really good about the property we chose.

As we got close to town Mary gave some additional detailed directions that led us right to her front door. She was just as kind and accommodating in person as she was over email. She gave us a tour of the cabin, told us everything we needed to know about staying there and then let us get settled in. She returned later with fresh farm eggs, bacon, milk and orange juice. We were all set for breakfast the next morning!

After our good friends arrived and got settled Mary took us out to show us SEVERAL different areas where we were allowed to hunt (public WIHA is about a 30 second drive from the cabin). She had also received permission ahead of time for us to hunt on nearby private land and introduced us to some land owners. She knows the area VERY well and told us everything we needed to know, including where NOT to hunt.

The cabin was great for us. There were 2 adults and 2 kids (ages 3.5 and 1.5) and we had PLENTY of room. There are two bedrooms with multiple twin beds in each. Were had enough room in our bedroom to set up a pack & play for our 1.5 yr old to sleep in. Our friends were able to set up a small cot in their bedroom for their 3.5 year old. One of the bedrooms has its own bathroom and is connected to the laundry room. It was GREAT having a washer/dryer in the cabin. There is a nice big front porch on the cabin with a picnic table and plenty of other seating - great place to sit and relax at any time of day. The family room is HUGE with 2 couches (that could be folded out into beds if needed) and a large chair with ottoman. The cabin does come equipped with cable TV and wi-fi which was a nice feature. Mary also made arrangements for us to purchase a PPV boxing event that we were excited to see. The fridge was stocked with just about any condiments you could need and then some. The full kitchen had all the pots, pans, utensils, plates, etc that you could possibly need. Mary even tracked down a wagon for us to tote the kids around the property in. By the way, the cabin is on a BEAUTIFUL piece of land and there are horses grazing just steps from the front door. We will be back!!

Peaceful Country Retreat

  • 5 of 5

This well-appointed cabin has everything you need to enjoy a blissful weekend - or more - in the rolling hills of Western Kansas. Sit on the porch and listen to all kinds of song birds, watch dear, rabbits, and other wild life, hear the beautiful rustle of cottonwoods trees. Inside, you'll find all the amenities of a fully equipped kitchen (including fresh cinnamon rolls and a dozen farm eggs the day we arrived - not guaranteed of course, but I'll bet Mary will have something special for you). Twin beds are comfy, bathrooms have several nice extras, and the cabin comes complete with it's own yellow lab should you feel inclined to sit a spell on the porch with him.

Great Vacation/Hunting Lodge

  • 5 of 5

We were very happy to stay at the Goddard Ranch in early May of 2015. We brought our entire families with us – 4 adults and 2 young children. The purpose was to hunt, but we found ourselves entertained in the beautiful West Cabin. Whether it was reading, playing board games, hiking, hunting or visiting on the front porch – we found plenty to do to enjoy a relaxing long weekend.

The owner drove a couple of us around the area pointing out the public land that we could hunt. It was great to get some “inside information” about the area. Thank you! We found the entire family to be quite friendly and would recommend the Goddard Ranch to others.

The property description was accurate and the cabin was very clean. We had clean linens and towels and a washer and dryer. The cabin also had some basic food available - pasta, coffee, sugar, flour...

Great Country Getaway

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I wanted to get away from the city for a couple of days over Memorial Day weekend with our dog, and we were thrilled with this cabin. The country lodge was very spacious, beautifully decorated, and had everything you could need for cooking and entertainment. Mary and Laurel were wonderful hosts and their hospitality was outstanding, as Mary treated us with homemade cinnamon rolls for our stay (they were delicious!), and Laurel even went out of his way to find us a fishing pole if we decided we wanted to throw a line the pond behind the cabin. We didn't even have to bring breakfast groceries because Mary said she would have fresh farm eggs, bacon, OJ, butter and bread in the refrigerator for us! I think it would be fair to say that our dog had a wonderful time as well, as he met the host family's friendly yellow lab; they had fun romping around in the front yard and taking a nap in the cool, air conditioned cabin. We thoroughly enjoyed taking morning walks and sitting on the porch swing at sunset. I was even so lucky to see a wild turkey Saturday morning roaming around as I drank my morning coffee -- you can't get that in the city!

I would highly recommend staying at this property -- the listing description was accurate, the property is very clean and well maintained, it was easy to find, and the owner's are very accomodating and friendly. We had a wonderful stay!

Spectacular Thanksgiving Weekend!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I accompanied dear family friends to the beautiful Kansas prairie (specifically the awesome Goddard Ranch!) with somewhat specialized yet flexible "agendas" for everyone, i.e., the guys would pheasant hunt, the gals would visit, enjoy the beautiful autumn nature, cook, read, relax, etc. The holiday weekend far surpassed our greatest expectations! Laurel and Mary were most gracious and generous hosts, sharing local history and abundant wildlife, their friendly and positively proud community, and preparing delicious meals. It was absolutely fantastic in every respect--an outstanding "retreat" for all ages!
