This was such a good house for our stay. We appreciated being able to turn on the a/c in the bedroom a couple of nights when it was very warm. But mostly, we loved sleeping with all the windows open, the fan on and enjoying the beautiful breeze. We cooked dinner in the beautifully equipped kitchen , and used the gas grill too. What a treat to have fruits and coconuts straight from the yard, and a walk on the beach each evening.
Trade winds house , Kauai
Was clean. Breezy , equipped with all our needs ! The stay was amazing . We loved it and would Deff come back !
Lovely, spacious cottage
We are two sisters and our sister-in-law, and came to Kauai to celebrate a retirement. We arrived at Tradewinds Cottage after a storm and quite rainy week on the north side of the island. Our luck changed in Kekaha! The sun shone every day with just a few sprinkles; it was wonderful.
Tradewinds Cottage was perfect: roomier than we expected, even prettier than the photos, very clean, with a well-stocked kitchen, washer/drier, plenty of linens, an enclosed deck accessible from the master bedroom, a barbecue, beach chairs and an umbrella, fruit trees (we enjoyed the oranges) - everything a guest might need. It's February, so it was warm during the day, and pleasantly cool at night; we had no need for air conditioning. The cottage is very private and located in a quiet neighborhood, just what we wanted (yes, there are roosters, but they're all over Kauai). It's just steps to the ocean and the sunsets were spectacular. There are grocery stores not far away in Waimea, and nearby Hanapepe has shops, including a great bookstore (the "westernmost book store in the US") and Japanese Grandma's Cafe, where we had a delicious lunch. Waimea Canyon is spectacular beyond words; it took our breath away. There are so many beaches to explore; our favorite was Salt pond, quieter than Poipu, and good for kids.
We loved our stay at Tradewinds Cottage, and recommend it highly!
Should be a 3.5
We chose this location in Kekaha because we had stayed in the south area of Kauai before and really liked it. Overall, the house was nice. The kitchen was impeccably supplied. There wasn't anything needed when making a meal. Lots of dishes, pots, pans, bowls, utensils, etc. Also, there were plenty of linens and beach towels.
The house is a close walk to the ocean, however, couldn't really say it was a beach that one could spend the day on, a lot of rocky areas and little sand. You will see some awesome sunrises and sunsets here though. The house's location was great for your morning walk and/or run. We really got to know the neighborhood.
Bring your ear plugs. The roosters will crow at all hours of the night and they are right outside your bedroom windows. So close that I could hear them flap their wings when getting on the fence to start their serenade to the night. Fortunately, I did have ear plugs with me. They woke us up at 1:00 AM, 3:00 AM, 3:30 AM, 5:00 AM and so on. They do not discriminate on time.
One of the primary reasons for renting this house was the fact that it advertised that it had air conditioning, Well, that's not totally true. There was a small air conditioning unit in the back bedroom only. The rest of the house got very hot and stuffy in spite of strategically located ceiling fans and stand alone fans.
The TV in the front room was very difficult to get to work properly. Except for the last day, we never had television in the front room. Admittedly we were out and about most of the day but would have liked to have had some television at night. On the very last day, we contacted the property manager, Sarah, and she came over and got everything working for us.
That's one thing, Sarah, was great to work with. The check out time on your last day is 10:00 AM. That can be a bit difficult to work with. We made an arrangement with Sarah to wash all linens and have them ready for her and in turn she gave us an additional hour and a half in the house. Thank you, Sarah.
Would we stay here again??? Maybe.
We are happy to hear that you found the house to be clean and well stocked upon your arrival. The neighborhood is local, and pleasant for a walk, or a morning/evening run.
As for the roosters, they are the chatterboxes that wander Kauai, and are no stranger to this area. They move from tree to tree, where they sleep at night.
There is no controlling them, and you will see them all over the island, in restaurants, and even as Walmart greeters. Some people find them charming, and others find them to be noisy pests. I am in the latter category, so I can sympathize. The last two guests have mentioned them in a particular tree at this property. We have contacted a neighbor, who is particularly skilled at relocating them, to open fields, far away from people. Hopefully, he will soon have them under control.
I am sorry that you waited to call Sarah about the TV, as you could have enjoyed it during your entire stay. Time Warner was recently purchased by Spectrum, and now the TV's are all difficult to operate. We spend more time on orientation to the TV than any other guest issue.
As for the A/C, it is only advertised on the site as being in the master bedroom. Most of the time it is not needed, but you were clearly there at a time that you found it less comfortable than usual. Most small houses don't have A/C at all, so having it in the master bedroom can certainly help.
This is the only part of the island where one can see sunset over the ocean, and find miles of nearly deserted sandy beach. If it is not right in front of your house, a short walk will lead you to miles of sand.
Thank you for staying with us, and we hope to see you again.

Great rental. Very good privacy, as advertised. Convenient location (Kokee Park and Polihale beach are close) in very quiet Kekaha. Very quiet, but the roosters are noisy...... This is Kauai.
Kool in Kekaha
This house is very cute & comfortable. The garden is lovely for just strolling thru (yes its that big). Some fruit trees (citrus, avocado which we happily consumed), torch ginger, orchids, plumeria galore, geckos, and of course beautiful moa. The walk to the ocean is 2 houses & perfect for the sunset. The lanai outside of the master was incredible for star gazing b4 bed. We would stay here again in a heartbeat. Mahalo Sarah & Scott.
Short drive to the Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park for the island's best hiking opportunity....access road is only a few blocks to the West
