About Denyse Gantenbein

We are a Canadian and Swiss couple who live in the United States but love to travel whenever we can manage it.

Why Denyse Gantenbein chose Uvero Alto

We love the friendly Dominican people. They are always so happy and fun. We have seldom met such consistently nice people in all of our travels.

What makes this condo unique

Las Dunas is small and personalized. Everyone is friendly and social yet it is quiet enough to have the beach or pool all to your self at times.

Wonderful on-the-sand condo.

We had a wonderful time staying in this property. The photos are accurate, but they don't come near to the real beauty found there. Everything you need is provided, including the sound of the wind and waves every evening.

While it is easy to just relax and stay put, we recommend renting a car and exploring Higuey, and Play Boca Chica (especially on a Sunday). Stop by one of the many road side stands and buy the sweetest pineapples, mangoes, and bananas. Yum!!

Denyse's info packet that she sends a week or two prior answered most of our questions: when we had other questions, she was very quick to respond.

It doesn't get any better than this!

Owner's Response: I always recommend renting a car to get the most out of the area since there are so many different things to see and do.

Building 10, Condo 2A

  • 5 of 5

You cannot say you have been to the DR if you are captured at an all-inclusive resort. Since you already paid for the food and drinks, you feel obligated to stay on the resort to get your money’s worth. This is fine if you do not want to actually experience the real country and the friendly people. But if you do want to experience the culture and the pleasant people in the DR then rent a condo and go out to eat and play.

This was our first visit to the DR and I was apprehensive concerning the local food, water and possibly the people. All of these issues disappeared within hours of arriving after eating a late lunch/dinner in Punta Cana village and graciously being assisted by locals with a dead battery of my rental car.

The condo I selected belongs to Denyse Ganterbein located in Uvero Alto. This condo has more than just an ocean view, it is literally a stone’s throw to the ocean, if you can get through the palm trees. It is in a community of approximately 5 building and thirty condos of which I may have seen 10 or less people on the beach at any given time. There is no reserving beach lounges or paying extra for a beach cabana. The staff is on the beach every day before sunrise cleaning the seaweed and debris from the day before. The condo is exactly as Denyse describes and better. Unlike the photo you see from the all-inclusive resorts of the best most expensive rooms and settling for a view of the parking lot 200 meters from the beach. This is the real thing. So if you like getting up in the morning in your pajamas and having your coffee on the patio watching the palms sway and the ocean rumble, this is your place.

Met and surpassed all expectations

  • 5 of 5

This experience was better than expected. The condo and grounds are in excellent condition. Minor issues we had with plumbing and air conditioning were fixed within hours of reporting. Very quiet and peaceful location, it was like a little slice of heaven.

Great time at Las Dunas.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our time at the beach. Having stayed at a resort last year in Punta Cana, we found this a refreshing change. The beach is quite, secluded, and safe. We rented a car from the complex and drove to Cap Cana and Blue Mall. Also made many trips into town. No driving issues at all. Great vacation!

Can't beat the view

  • 4 of 5

Our favorite thing about this condo was the amazing view and the large balcony to enjoy it from. Renting from Denyse allowed us to spread out a bit and enjoy an oceanfront view - both features that we could not have afforded at the resorts. The built-in shade on the beach was fantastic, and there was a constant ocean breeze so we never felt the heat. We appreciated the peaceful beach (except for the final day when a noisy chihuahua was outside) and that the vendors didn't approach our area. Inside the condo, the provided water cooler was really nice to have - no need to buy water on the way in. The washer & dryer are a bit awkward to get to behind a door in the kitchen (the propane tank is there as well), but it was great to do a couple of loads of laundry - especially the towels because there were just enough (4 beach/pool towels; 4 bath towels). It was great not to have to pack those but a few extras would be nice. Activities: We enjoyed a lot of R&R on the beach, the balcony and at the pool. We usually swim in the ocean a lot, but for much of our stay the water & beach were inundated with seaweed (all the resorts w/in walking distance had varying degrees of success trying to clear it. I'm not sure if that is seasonal or tidal or what, because it was significantly better the last two days. We tried to visit (and drove to) Ojos Indigenous Ecological Park, but when we finally found it we were told it was closed to the public. Spent a day at Playa Blanco in the Punta Cana Resort - it's $20/adult but you get that back as a credit at the restaurant/bar. The beach/water there was gorgeous and it was fun to watch the kite surfers. Also did a snorkeling excursion to Isla Catalina. The snorkeling was great, the lunch was okay, but the provided transportation to the boat and back was frustratingly inefficient. I'd recommend booking snorkeling through Marina Caribe instead - it's much closer! Spent an afternoon at Macao Beach & loved riding the waves there.

Food: We had the Dominican meal prepared for us and it was awesome and so much food! Even with my 14 & 16-year-old boys (big eaters!) we had leftovers that lasted another night & lunches. Also ate dinner twice at Jellyfish and had great meals both times. We cooked for ourselves the rest of the time.

Car: We rented online in advance but arrived at the airport to be told there were NO cars. Major hassle. Really wish we'd rented through Marcia at Las Dunas originally!

Owner's Response: It sounds like you had a 5 star experience while in our home. I can see how arriving on December 24 could pose a problem with rental cars so I'll recommend renting one from the condo complex office for major holiday dates.

An unforgettable vacation.

  • 4 of 5

I will have to admit, the initial impression of Punta Cana was total fear and regret. The drive over from the airport to the property was a bit eye opening and unsettling to say the lease. But the minute we pulled up to the gate and got out of our rental car, the overwhelming feeling of peace and relaxation came over us. The property managers came out to greet us and took us right to the unit. The smell of the beach and ocean were so enticing. The view from the condo was spectacular! The property was very nicely maintained and I loved how they kept all the rift-raft away from the beach and pool. We were a little disappointed that the hot tub and wading pool were unusable our entire stay but the infinity pool was great and the ocean was amazing. Some of the best water and sand I have ever dug my toes in. The cable box and telephone did not work the first night but I emailed Denyse and she had a maintenance man on it the very next morning. The spare bathroom's sink leaked but again, was fixed immediately.

And the in room chef that came in made a phenomenal meal for the 4 of us that lasted for 3 days.

The staff was so friendly and cooperative. The 2 gals in the office booked us 3 amazing tours and for such good prices. And we loved having the water filtration system and bottled water service.

Overall, we had a wonderful experience and have some great memories to share.
