Photos and Description of this Wardsboro holiday farmhouse

5 Bedrooms, 2+ Bath, Sleeps 10

This welcoming rustic farmhouse remains charming and unspoiled inside with lots of room to roam outside, including 84 private acres. Perfect for small groups, families and as a romantic retreat. Top floor fully renovated in 2014 to create two large, beamed-ceiling bedrooms, TV games room, and shower room with toilet and underfloor heating. The quiet location provides a real escape, yet it's convenient for both Mount Snow and Stratton ski resorts. You can cross-country ski, sled, play lawn games, and ride bikes on the property. For hill-walkers, trails on Stacey mountain behind the house lead up to the remains of early settlers' farms. In the summer you can find extensive hiking and biking in the surrounding state parks and forests, and swimming at Townshend Dam Beach, Beautiful Grout Pond, Lye Brook Falls, Hamilton Falls. Families will enjoy the petting farm at Brattleboro.

For Shoppers, the local General Store has all necessities as well as many luxuries, and exploring the funky shops and co-ops in Brattleboro always yields treasures. Manchester is famous for its high-end outlet shopping. Of course there's wonderful antiquing and craft-buying in the surrounding villages and Brattleboro; even glass-blowing in neighboring Jamaica. Enjoy good food in picturesque Newfane (Old Newfane Inn, Four Columns Inn, Coach House), Stratton (Organic Pizza Company), and West Dover (Dover Forge, Deerhill Inn, First Wok). The Bittersweet Cafe just a few minutes' walk away provides great coffee, hot chocolate and pancakes (with Vermont maple syrup of course) at breakfast or delicious sandwiches at lunch.

The house sleeps 10 in 5 bedrooms (1 King, 1 Queen, 3 twin bedrooms), two bath/shower with toilet. There is a pull-out for 2 extra visitors. The large wood-paneled and beamed living room has working fireplace (firewood provided). The Sitting room is separate with views over meadows, historic cemetery, and mountains. The upstairs TV games room gives extra room to hang out, with a desk by the window who want to work. The large dining room with farmhouse table and benches seats 10. A separate, paneled mudroom stores away coats, boots, bags, and skis. The well-equipped kitchen looks out over lawns and meadows. Washer-dryer.

About Jennifer Mahon

We have 4 small children and currently live overseas. We love hiking, skiing, and spending time with family and friends in Vermont.

Jennifer Mahon purchased this farmhouse in 1970

Why Jennifer Mahon chose Mount Snow Area

My parents bought Fairview Farmhouse when I was a small child. I've been coming to Vermont as long as I can remember. My favorite childhood memories were born here, and now I love being able to bring my own kids. It's wonderful to let them explore freely on the property knowing they are safe well away from roads. In the evening it is cosy and romantic to sit round the fire.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The house is relaxed, not at all fussy, and welcoming. Its setting on a rise slightly away from the picturesque village of Wardsboro is peaceful and safe, yet close enough to the local cafe and general store that we can walk down to the village to pick up the morning New York Times and a treat for breakfast. The views are wonderful all year round. It has a claim to fame: On the property is the largest hand-pegged barn in Southern Vermont, a massive historic structure remaining from the Farm's days as a dairy farm.

Great Casual Location

  • 4 of 5

This was our second time staying here in Wardsboro. The house is very roomy so it accommodates multiple generations nicely. Two in our party took a four hour hike up the little mountain, behind the property (the logging road/trail entrance is down by the intersection of East Hill and Fairview). The leaves are nearing "peak". We went to a local craft festival, country store and kids sporting event. Great location.

Highly recommended. Absolutely beautiful property!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay at this house. It comfortably fit two couples with their children. We had a great BBQ on the lawn. At night we played games in the cozy living room. What we liked the most is that we got to stay in a beautiful Vermont country house in a lovely Vermont setting. The property was clean and well maintained. I would highly recommend this property.

Lovely weekend at the farmhouse

  • 4 of 5

Had a great time with some friends for a winter weekend at this farmhouse! There were 12 of us in total and found that there was plenty of space for everyone. We especially enjoyed dinner and breakfast at the big dining table where we could all fit! We also liked the nice big living room area - it was a good size for multiple board games going at once. We unfortunately didn't get much snow this weekend, but we had fun tubing at Mount Snow. On the way home, we hit up the distillery (which made made maple syrup liqueur and maple syrup whiskeys!) and a small cheese farm/factory in Brattleboro. Jennifer was very responsive and great to work with and had lots of great recommendations about things to do in the area.

This farmhouse worked out perfectly for our group

  • 4 of 5

The women in my family enjoy a casual "Ladies' Weekend" every fall. This year we celebrated our 25th year together, and we stayed at the farmhouse in Wardsboro. It suited our needs perfectly. It IS a rambling farmhouse, it is spacious and had amenities sufficient to meet all our needs. The living room, dining room and upstairs bedrooms are especially spacious. The online photos had me thinking that there are two separate sitting rooms downstairs but they open up into one large space, which suited us better than two separate areas. We took a day trip out to Winhall, Emerald Lake, the Peru Country Store, into Jamaica and back to the farmhouse. The very best part was the hike up Stacey Mountain. It did take us a little while to find the entrance to the logging road (it's right by the stop sign at Fairview and East Hill Road). Three of us took a four hour hike and while we wanted to continue on, others were waiting for our return. Parts of the hike were rugged (it looked like the logging road had been washed out in sections) and other parts were a most gorgeous walk in the park, a broad access road with stone walls along either side. We found the stone foundations of buildings long gone. Those folks were made of sturdy stock. I would recommend the farmhouse (just please, don't book the weekend we want to book - we expect to be coming back).

Owner's Response: Thanks for sharing your trips and walks. We love doing these excursions, too! The house works well for groups and families, since everyone can be together enjoying good company near the fire, and also find privacy if they want it. We look forward to your return.

Summer Experience

  • 3 of 5

This is a large house with a nice lawn. Most of the acreage is covered in shrub brush, so walking the property in summer is very limited. The beds are comfortable and the layout of the house is great. My criticisms as a summer renter would be that the charcoal grill is almost non-functional and a gas grill would be much appreciated, the upstairs, as of Summer 2015, does not have screens so we needed to request fans, and the property, as I said, is mostly not walkable. The yard is well mowed and maintained and has really nice views. The owners were very attentive to all concerns and the house is nicely located, being only 15 minutes from Mount Snow, 25 minutes from Stratton, and maybe 35 minutes from the super fun town of Manchester, VT which as literally best bookstore I've ever seen. Northshire Books is great for whole families to visit. Overall, the house is a good value.
