About Bobbie Turner
My family has been coming to Mount Desert Island (MDI) since 1991. We love the character of Bass Harbor village--the slower pace of life here, the sound of the bell buoys on the water, and the unique beauty and history of MDI. There really is no place in the world like it! As my parents have gotten older, the next generation has stepped in to manage our summer vacation home for visitors. Our goal for each of you is to allow you to experience the simple beauty of the island and to fall in love with it, just as we have. Our house is divided by an interior wall into two separate homes: Harbor View Cottage in the front (https://www.vrbo.com/1565813) and Bass Harbor Hideaway in the back (this listing). Harbor View Cottage is larger, more updated, and offers a picturesque view of Bass Harbor from the living room bay window. Bass Harbor Hideaway is less updated, more rustic, and offers a great value for this prime island location. Our family also owns a ski townhouse rental property in Breckenridge, Colorado: "BreckenDen" (https://www.vrbo.com/892238). Please let us know if we can answer any questions about our rental properties. We'd love to have you stay with us!

Why Bobbie Turner chose Bass Harbor
Bass Harbor is a active fishing/lobstering village with a mix of vacationers and year-round residents. We love that our side of the island---known as the 'Quiet Side'---is not busy or commercial, but has held onto the original character of the area. Stay with us and you'll get a true sense of the beauty and slower pace of coastal Maine (away from tour buses and traffic!). Because our home is right across the street from the harbor, visitors enjoy cool sea breezes and the sounds of bell buoys and fog horns--all things you'd miss with rentals that aren't at the water's edge.
What makes this House unique
Bass Harbor Hideaway is functional, clean and comfortable, but has not been updated. For this reason, we are able to offer it at a price that is significantly lower than other area rentals. It's a great value for the area! Bass Harbor Hideaway is across the street and up the hill from Bass Harbor, a scenic marina filled with lobster boats. It is also walking distance to the Seafood Ketch restaurant. Step back in time as the fog rolls in, imagining the area's nautical history, which includes the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse and surrounding seafaring community.

Great Family Rental
We enjoyed our stay at this rental. I love older homes and their character. It is very spacious with a large kitchen. This is a great rental for families. I was very pleased that it had a washer and dryer. We were able to do up our laundry before packing back in the suitcase and saved me from doing it once we arrived home. The kitchen and downstairs bathroom could use a little updating but due to the great rate, I'm not complaining. The thermostats were a little difficult to figure it but once we did the heat worked great. Overall our stay was quite comfortable. Just a short drive into Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. We would recommend this rental for families looking for a quiet, less traveled path away from all the tourists.
Family Vacation Gem
We thoroughly enjoyed our weeklong stay at this wonderful home set in an idyllic location. We loved the location, as we were able to walk right down to the beach each morning and were able to walk to a wonderful seafood restaurant on the ocean, as well as to a harbor where we took a really fun 4-hour cruise. The house was perfect for our vacation and the owners, Barb and Bill, were very kind and accommodating. We enjoyed cooking and eating meals there and playing games in the living room at night. We also enjoyed sitting out on the deck and watching the birds and the ocean. I highly recommend this rental! We came all the way from Southern California and we will come again.
We are so glad you had a great visit. Thanks for such a glowing review!
Wonderful back apartment in quaint Bass Harbor
We enjoyed our stay at this rental. As a family of six we were able to comfortably stay utilizing the two upstairs bedrooms and the sleeper sofa which was as comfortable as sleeper sofas can be. Linens and towels were provided which was convenient as we were trying to limit what we needed to pack. This is an older property and with that there are a few concessions. As a historic home there were some insects, particularly around doorways. Also, my husband did have to fiddle with the thermostat a bit to get the heat working. However, once on it worked wonderfully! These concessions were not a large issue and we would gladly stay here again.
This is not an updated property in regards to decor. The pictures accurately represent the property which is quite retro, particularly the kitchen and downstairs bathroom. We were pleasantly surprised to find the kitchen appliances in good working order and basic cookware and utensils. As with most rentals, the cookware and utensils did not appear to be used frequently and needed a quick wash.
The owners are very pleasant and helpful. During our stay the dryer quit and it was promptly replaced. The location of the rental was ideal for us. We enjoyed staying in a less populated part of MDI and exploring a few of the paths less travelled. We would recommend this rental to anyone looking to enjoy MDI as the locals do and who are interested in lodging away from the tourists of Bar Harbor and Northeast Harbor. This is a great rental for families due to the varied sleeping arrangements, large yard, spacious kitchen and washer/dryer.
Thanks so much for your review of Bass Harbor Hideaway! We're so glad your family had a great time here. As you noted, our pricing reflects the less-updated nature of the place, offering well-below-market rates for this beautiful location. You'll be glad to know we have updated the kitchen equipment to be a little less "rustic." Thanks again!
We were the first guests of the 2017 summer season. Perfect, quiet setting with walkable access to free Island shuttle. If you time it right the shuttle will pick you up right at the end of the driveway. The shuttle stops at a variety of places including Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor.
Five of us stayed comfortably in the roomy home using the sleeper sofa along with four twin beds. Wi-Fi is intermittent and works best in the kitchen area. The owners, Barbara and Bill Evans are wonderful, friendly, and helpful people. They will answer any questions regarding shopping, restaurants, and the surrounding area. Great price too! We made a lot of terrific family memories on this vacation.
Hope to return again someday.

We are so glad your vacation was enjoyable. Thank you for your kind words!
charming location & owners, but needs a good scrub
A wonderful location, and good sized house, at (seemingly) one of the less expensive rental prices in the area. Listing is accurate regarding amenities, location, and layout....The owners were great- they were helpful with area restaurant recommendations, etc. However, we were disappointed in the cleanliness (cobwebs at sinks, dishes in cupboards seemed dirty or corroded, floors could use a scrubbing, bathrooms felt grungy, bathtub wouldn't drain.). Booking, payment, and security deposit processes were fine. Our favorite area spots: Milagro's coffee shop (Southwest Harbor), Southwest Bicycle rental, and Mt. Desert Ice Cream (Bar Harbor).
We were disappointed to hear that the cleanliness of our rental home was not up to par for your visit. We have a cleaning service come before every rental, so we're not sure what happened. We see that we need to keep more careful track of their work, and will check into the slow drainage of the bathtub.
Bass Harbor Hideaway has more than 120 years of history and is surrounded by gardens and grassy fields. Cobwebs do occur, but we do our best to stay on top of them. We are more rustic than some of the other more expensive island rentals, but our pricing reflects that. As our other reviews indicate, our guests typically feel they're getting good value for a beautiful, tranquil location. Thanks again for staying with us, and for your feedback.
The Best Time Ever!!
We arrived on Sunday evening and could not have been more excited about our drive to Bass Harbor. Our vacation rental was located in a large historic home owned by Barb and Bill Evans. The house was constructed in the mid 1800's. The home is been sectioned off converting the back half into its own private living quarters. This charming rental has a very large kitchen, two bedrooms, two baths, living and laundry room. The rental is complete with wifi and cable tv. The best asset of the home are the owners Barb and Bill Evans. Barb and Bill have been living at their summer home for the past 27 years. They have a wealth of knowledge about the local establishments and historic parts of Mt. Desert Island and Acadia. Fresh lobsters can be purchased across the street, and if you need help, Bill graciously volunteers his time to show you how to prepare them. Bass Harbor is a beautiful, picturesque harbor town. As you look out across the bay you see what you have always imagined....lobster boats, lobster buoys, sailboats, and boat docks. The village homes are complimented by landscaping arrangements full of a vast variety of delightful wild flowers. Across the harbor you can see the town of Bernard nestled on a hill displaying it's own small town charm. The best thing about Bass Harbor is that it is removed from all of the hustle and bustle found in the other harbor town communities on Mt. Desert Island. It is so much more relaxing than having to deal with the traffic and commercialism found in the nearby towns. After you have had a day out touring Acadia National Park, Bass Harbor, Southwest Harbor and Northeast Harbor you can come back to Barb and Bill Evan's rental for a relaxing evening, take a walk around the bay, or eat at the Seafood Katch. I would not stay anywhere else....hoping to return for another great vacation!
Many thanks for such a great review. We hope you can visit again some time!
