About Jan or Bettina

We moved to Los Cedros in 1992 onto our 100 hectar farm, working in farming, reforestation and construction. We also have a woodworkshop, a mango plantation, teak, pochote and cashew reforestation. We moved our artist workshop to San Jose lately and treat this as a gentleman farm.

Jan or Bettina purchased this farmhouse in 1992

Why Jan or Bettina chose Puntarenas

This is life on the edge of the jungle with nature intact. The river is a source of wildlife, a monkey highway with little tourism. Just 70 meters from the beach but totally fenced in, with lovely local caretakers Marvin and Cynthia. Our next neighbors are 500 yards away. Still it is just 2 miles from Montezuma

What makes this farmhouse unique

secure, authentic, with lots of local flair, low key, private and personal. You can learn a lot about life in the tropics and nature is very close!

GREAT

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful stay . Beautiful house equipped with everything we needed and just a 2 minute walk to a quiet beach 4 minute walk to a lagoon. The house is modern ,extremely well maintained and clean. Also wonderfully decorated. as you would do for your private house not as a beach rental.

We have been to Montezuma many times but this is the safest place we ever stayed.

And the best part were the amazing caretakers Cinthia and Marvin who were immediately available, So friendly and helpful. they Kept the house spotless , did our laundry , kept things well stocked, showed us how to work everything and a on the rare occasion when something small needed fixing ( like greasing the chain of the bikes) it was done fast

our only regret was that they would not come back with us

Owner's Response: Thank you Michael for your kind review and that you want to visit us again next winter. It is quite a challenge to keep everything in good working order because of the tropical climate. We are constantly fixing things and improving our house. At the moment we are replacing gutters and doors. It started raining once in a while and it is beautiful springtime now, all green and sprouting. A good time to visit. The ocean is calm and clear and the temperature went down a little. All the best Jan

Great house really close to the beach

  • 5 of 5

My group loved staying at this house. The house was in great order and the owner were very nice and hospitable. The homemade mango juice was amazing.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the note. Even though I was worried at first about the size of your group you left the house in good shape. For groups bigger than six you really should add the downstairs apartment (at extra cost). I am glad you enjoyed the beach and loved to explore the river as well.

PERFECT PLACE FOR THE RIGHT TYPE OF PERSON

  • 5 of 5

Let me begin by stating that Jan and Bettina were wonderful. They were very responsive and helpful throughout the entire rental experience. The property is truly unique and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. However, while very modern in design, the house might be considered too rustic for some people in that there are no screens and some rooms are open to the outside. We had a few problems with insects the first night, but that was our fault for not closing the curtains as instructed in the information book. Insect were not a problem on subsequent evenings. Again, we enjoyed our stay as did our traveling companions. I do not mean to convey that the property is lacking in any way. It has any modern convenience that one would desire. The only word of advise that I would offer is to be sure that your traveling companions are open to unique experiences and are a bit adventurous.

Owner's Response: 🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜🐜 No idea who is writing this? Our place is indeed for people who enjoy nature in all it's aspects! We have two very different seasons - dry and wet, windy and still, hot and a little less hot. Our house is designed to accommodate in both seasons. We are directly adjacent to a biological corridor connecting the Reserva Absoluta Cabo Blanco to the Refugio Mixto Romelia. So yes, please expect to see animals. At the moment Whiteface Monkeys and Howler Monkeys are passing by every day - it is dry so there is little food. Sometimes, yes, we get flying insects but rarely. We got bats to eat them.

Los Cedros Cabuya

  • 4 of 5

This farm is an amazing piece of property. It is spacious, safe and nicely furnished. The kitchen is fully stocked. The mango juice, eggs and milk produced in the property are to die for. You should plan to arrive in daylight to make it easier to find. Read up on what to do for mosquito bites as you will encounter them in this area. Make sure you check your shoes before you wear them as you might be unpleasantly surprised by scorpions taking naps inside them:). You can hear the monkeys and all kinds of critters, which we loved. The cold showers are awesome because of the hot weather and sitting outdoors when the temperatures are highest was soothing. The proximity to the river, ocean and water falls was awesome. This is a house for a family who loves the outdoors.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the nice review. Yes, it is a jungle out here and there are many animals to see. Since it rained lately there are some flying bugs but we rarely have mosquitos. Best is to turn down the lights during early evenings. We try our best to make our guests happy. Never had a 89 year old lady at the house, never 15 unanounced guests. I am personally so happy that all went well, for the whole family and that you could enjoy our farm. Pure Vida

Montezuma paradise

  • 5 of 5

We agree with all the other positive reviews- Rio Cedros is clean, comfortable and each room is interesting. Our family of four had a wonderful three week stay. Despite the heat, the circulation in the house allowed us to sleep comfortably. We cooked dinner in the house most nights and the kitchen had everything we needed. We fell asleep each night to the sound of the waves, howler monkeys and cicadas. Jan was immediately responsive to all our emails and called to check in with us when we first arrived. Cynthia and Marvin ( the caretakers) were always kind and responsive. We had an incredible vacation exploring the Rio Cedros beach, walking or taking the bus into Montezuma center, learning to surf, horseback riding and zip lining to the local waterfalls. The Welcome Book gives you lots of valuable information about the property and tips for getting around the area. Thank you for a wonderful stay- we hope to return!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the review. All guests are different and we try to accommodate the best we can. The tropics have their own set of challenges and it takes a bit of an open mind to truly enjoy. As you and your family did. Hope to have you back.

Spectacular!!!

  • 5 of 5

Everytime we go to Costa Rica, I leave a little more of my heart there. This time, it captured my soul. I could have lived the rest of my life in Jan's house, across the road from the magical Playa Cedros. In fact, my children are still asking to go back. The house is wonderful. Creative. Gorgeous. The beds are comfortable and the kitchen had more than we needed. But sometimes it is the people that make a place connect to your soul. Cynthia and Marvin treated us like family. Every morning my little one, Diego, 2, would sneak out of the house to visit them. Even though he doesn't speak Spanish, it didn't matter. They took more than good care of us. Marvin even hung a swing up in the Higueron tree for us to use. They gave the kids frozen Mango juice, which is one of the more amazing things I have had in my life. The property is beautiful. Filled with iguanas, howler monkeys, butterflies and birds. It is a veritable wonder land. It is completely fenced in and very safe. The two dogs, Singa and Kaiser, were fantastic. We are hoping to return around Christmastime and frankly, there is nowhere I would rather stay. And I don't think my two little ones, ages 2 and 6, would let us stay anywhere else!!! There are a lot of ants, but this is normal in that part of Costa Rica, and in Costa Rica in general. But if you can think of them as nature's cleaning crew, they aren't so bad. And there are geckos in the house. And occasionally a praying mantis or two. We loved it. All of it. And thank you to everyone who made our month long stay so incredible. We will (knock on wood) be back.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Rebecca and Vincent! You where wonderful just as well. We love to have families and you really got our place. Our little farm is great for children and Marvin and Cinthya make it all work. They milk the cows and make the cheese and try to help where they can. We hope you can make it back. Pura Vida Jan

Located between Montezuma for dining, excursions, tourist information, night life, car, bike and fourwheel rental and Cabuya/Cabo Blanco for low key country life, bird watching, dining, fishing, diving, surfing etc. , all to be reached by public bus, our place is away from it all but still close. Endless beaches and a river running all year right next to the house invite to explore. It forms an ever changing fresh water lagoon right in front of the house where locals and visitors mingle. It's better than any artifical pool and changes it's appearance with every season. There are also waterfalls to explore. Famous surf at Cedros beach is right in front of the house (good for learning) and Mal Pais and Santa Teresa surf beaches are 20 minutes away by car. There are tide pool, pelicans and lots of fish to be caught right from the shore.
