About the property

3 Bedroom, 2.5 bathroom Mountain Getaway with spectacular views

*** All Nationalities Welcome! ***

The Mountain Star is located in the heart of the Coconino National Forest along the San Francisco Peaks scenic corridor between the mountain town of Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon. This spectacular and convenient location sets The Mountain Star apart from Williams and other rural locations. It can be rented for as little as 2 days, but is ideal for longer stays. See my personal site for lots of handy information at:

The Mountain Star is less than one hour’s drive from the Grand Canyon’s main entrance, and if you don’t want to drive yourself, a local tour company van will pick you up directly from this property. So enjoy the Grand Canyon and then leave the heat and crowds behind to enjoy your very own mountain retreat!

The Mountain Star, located at an elevation of 8,000 feet (2,438 meters) on 5 beautiful acres and backed by National Forest land, offers breath-taking natural beauty, expansive views, direct and easy access to nature, boundless outdoor activities (nature walks and hikes, biking, climbing, etc.) and a spectacular night sky. It is a sanctuary for inspiration, relaxation, reflection and rejuvenation, as well as being perfectly situated for outdoor fun and adventure. Its spacious, 2nd-story wrap-around deck with picnic table, chairs and chiminea (outdoor fireplace) provides for unparalleled enjoyment of the mountain air and scenery.

Experience seeing the sun breach the horizon every morning and evening, moon rises and moon-sets too. When is the last time you let a mountain breeze, the expansive play of earth light and shadow, nature’s panorama and the rich senses of the moment guide your day of thoughts and activity? The Mountain Star offers this to you and your loved ones on a daily basis.

The Mountain Star is completely wind and sun powered (with an automatic propane generator backup system). During the warmer months, the home is 'air conditioned' with refreshing mountain air using the operable windows that are in every room of the house, ceiling fans throughout and the operable window blinds throughout...and nights are always refreshingly cool in the warmest of summertime. During the colder months, the Mountain Star stays warm with 3 radiant heaters, a gas 'fire place' and a very efficient, living room pellet stove.

All outdoor photographs on this site were taken directly from the living room or leisure deck of The Mountain Star.

In addition to all the usual, full home amenities, this resort home offers:

• Spacious, 2nd-story wrap-around deck with picnic table, chairs and chiminea (outdoor fireplace) as well as a fire pan (an alternate form of an outdoor fireplace). Cut and split wood provided.

About Rob Dutton

Hi, my name is 'Flagstaff' Rob Dutton. I am a photographer and musician formerly masquerading as a computer system's analyst. I enjoy meeting people from around the world and have always been an internationalist by nature and upbringing. I am enthusiastic about life and wholeheartedly believe that nature and natural beauty nurture the soul and aid creative and spiritual growth. My enthusiasm for life is directly fueled by my vision and creation of “The Mountain Star”. I designed her and completed construction in 2009. I enlisted a true craftsman to help me build. 'Inspired living' was my guiding principle for the location and design. She was built with lots of love and perseverance, and it excites me to share with others what “The Mountain Star” has to offer.

Why Rob Dutton chose Arizona

The Mountain Star sits in a rare and amazing location. It has the beauty and openness of a remote mountain location yet is only 20 miles from the key regional center and resort town of Flagstaff. It is easily accessed via a well-maintained and beautiful, undivided 2-lane highway (AZ 180) that exists almost exclusively to provide thoroughfare to the Grand Canyon. The Mountain Star’s five acres are part of an area known as Kendrick Park, a 180-acre private land “island” in the middle of the Coconino National Forest (the largest stand of Ponderosa Pine in North America). The home itself is directly backed by the national forest.

What makes this house unique

I believe this home offers the most beautiful and panoramic views available in Northern Arizona. The home’s extensive windowing was designed specifically for the views. The home directly faces the beautiful San Francisco Peaks to the south, Kendrick Mountain to the west, Saddle Mountain to the east and forested hills to the north. Though easily accessed, it is completely ”off-the-grid” and is powered by the sun and the wind. At 2,438 meters (8,000 feet) of elevation, the night sky is glorious.

Breathtaking getaway

  • 5 of 5

Spent 3 nights here with our family as a jumping off point for local adventures. We explored the Grand Canyon as well as Antelope Canyon and neither were a bad drive. The house has a very warm welcoming vibe with amazing views on all sides. Mornings were spent with open windows enjoying the sunrise over the mountains. Evening were campfires with s'mores and starry skies. We would definitely stay here again!

We spent 3 days at the Mountain Star and it was the perfect getaway!

Rob sent us a great summary of the area beforehand so we knew exactly what to expect going from Houston to Flagstaff. He met with us on arrival to go over the property and recommended local areas to explore.

We spent our nights staring up at millions of stars up above. The view of the mountain is like nothing I've ever seen before! Pictures really don't do it justice, it's really awe-inspiring to see in person.

For the house, there is a full kitchen with everything we needed for our meals. The beds were comfortable and we really enjoyed the whole-home speaker system. The temperature dropped down below freezing but the heaters worked well to keep the rooms nice and toasty. We were a little nervous with the pilot light but Rob walked us through it when we arrived so we didn't have any issues!

The balcony wraps around the house and has multiple ways to access it. I was downstairs and woke up early to watch the sun rise, and I was able to go out the bedroom door and up to the balcony without disturbing anyone sleeping upstairs.

The Grand Canyon is less than an hour away as stated on the website. While we really enjoyed seeing it and the Painted Desert, I think next time we will spend a lot more time close to the Mountain Star because it's worth the trip just to be there.

Before I stayed here I would have told you my favorite place in the world was Fredericksburg TX. After this vacation, I might actually move to Flagstaff myself some day. Rob is very knowledgeable about the area and friendly as anyone I've ever met. The Mountain Star resort holds a very special place in my heart and I will definitely return for a week in the near future.

Thank you for opening your home to us, we loved it and could not have asked for a better place to stay for our vacation.

exceeded my expectations

  • 5 of 5

It was the first time I ever did something like this and will definitely be seeing Rob again in the future. His place is amazing with beautiful views and easy access to everything we want to do. He was very informative about how everything works and taking that extra time to make everything perfect. Thanks again and can't wait till next time.

Great Home, Views and Location!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Mountain Star. Rob is very detailed oriented as well as very responsive! He ensured we knew at check in everything there is to know about the home and also helped us plan out our activities for our family. We had a tour company pick up right up at the house to give us a tour of the GC, we also took in Sedona (Pink Jeep Tours), and had a day on the slopes at the Arizona Snow bowl.... Great Stay!!!

Perfect Home Base for Sedona - Flagstaff - Grand Canyon vacation

  • 5 of 5

What a great experience! We were looking to stay somewhere with good amenities, remote but not too remote, and with a beautiful view. The Mountain Star exceeded our expectations. Rob is a super host - he takes the time to introduce you to the home as well as give you the inside scoop on where the locals go; remote hikes, good places to eat, scenic routes, etc. Rob is very prompt and helpful. The Mountain Star is probably the 10th VRBO home we have rented and by far the best experience. We will come back when we get a chance.

Perfection - Inside and Out - November 10th - 13th 2016

  • 5 of 5

The Mountain Star is Beautiful - Inside and Out. I may even have taken more pictures inside of the house than outside at the beautiful, breathtaking view. The artwork, the plants, the music in every room made this a fantastic vacation. Clean, comfortable, well-appointed - words can't even express and there isn't anything I would change. My husband and I finished off the 3rd leg of our 25th Anniversary Tour at Rob's masterpiece of a home - and it was a terrific end to our journey. Only regret - wish we'd had another night or two! While there we did see the Grand Canyon, however, I would have been perfectly fine just enjoying the view and his home. Everything you could possibly need is there and Rob is a fantastic host. We really, really hope to be able to return for a longer stay!
