The “Cygnet Cottage” began as a stable in the 1890s and has been lovingly owned and updated by just two families since. Today it boasts a spacious main house and guesthouse with beautiful hardwood floors throughout, country and antique furnishings, and a state-of-the-art kitchen. Located on a protected cove of beautiful Lake Monomonack, the Cygnet Cottage offers peace and privacy plus endless opportunities for entertainment and relaxation.
The rental -- which includes both the main house and guesthouse -- is perfect for up to four families. The five bedrooms and four full baths offer comfort and privacy, while the large living areas and kitchen are perfect for entertaining large groups.
A 20-panel solar array on the guesthouse roof provides around 60% of the cottage's yearly electricity, which helps minimize the cottage's carbon footprint.
The main house has two large bedrooms upstairs, one with a king bed and one with a queen. Each has its own full bath. The guesthouse has two large bedrooms with queen beds, a smaller bedroom with two single beds, and two full bathrooms. There are also two very comfortable foldout beds that can be set up as needed in either house. Every bedroom has sweeping lake views!
The rental includes everything needed to make your stay comfortable and easy: high-speed wireless internet, fresh bath towels and sheets, beach towels, silverware and glassware, cooking implements and serving pieces, a gas grill, and washer and dryer. Also included are a ping-pong table, flat-screen TV set and DVD player, Apple TV with Netflix subscription, stereo with iPod hookup, fishing rods and equipment, board games and books galore for kids and adults. Both houses have central air conditioning, though due to the mild climate, you most likely won't need it.
The lake is steps from the house. There is a sandy beach area along shore, a 30 foot wooden dock, and a wooden swim float 100 feet offshore. There are two kayaks, two canoes, a pedal boat, a row boat, and an inflatable zodiac boat. Life jackets, paddles and all other necessary boating equipment are also provided. You can stay in the cove or head out to explore the 700-acre main lake. Native to the lake are loons, mallard ducks, beavers, painted turtles, bullfrogs, bluegills, perch, pickerel, bass and a great blue heron that frequently buzzes the house.
Feel free to email with any questions; the Cygnet Cottage is a wonderful place to vacation!
I grew up in New England, live in California, and enjoying coming back to New Hampshire as frequently as I can. There is nothing like the four wonderful seasons of New England.

The Cygnet cottage has been in my family as long as I can remember, and we love spending as much time as we can there.
The Cygnet cottage is nestled in the woods right on a lake, and offers ample opportunity to enjoy the outdoors. It is one of the only rentals in New England that has an array of solar panels that offset most of the annual electricity usage. It is conveniently located at around 2 hours to Boston and roughly 5 hours to New York City.
Lots of space and beautiful location.
This place was exactly what we were looking for!
We had such a wonderful stay at this spacious lake house. We had the quiet cove all to ourselves. It is the perfect place for children and adults. Our grandchildren loved the sandy beach and the paddle boat and my sons were able to fish. The house was very clean, thanks to Tara who was such a help. We loved our vacation and would recommend this lake house to all.
This is our third year of renting this property for two weeks in late summer. The two houses - the beautiful two bedroom main house, three bedroom guest house - make it an ideal place for family gatherings and vacation guests. On an isolated point of Lake Monomonac, it is both quiet and serene with beautiful lake scenes - from the early morning light fog to the evening reflections of the pines as the sun sets. Plenty of things to do in the area: Great hiking at all levels of difficulties ranging from the relaxing beauty of a stroll by Converse pond just across route 119 to the challenge of climbing Mount Monadnock; nearby Art exhibits with the Sharon Arts store in Peterborough and Andre's magnificent sculpture 'mountain' in Brookline (which is also another great afternoon of hiking); fine nearby restaurants (our favorite is the Waterhouse in Peterborough); and of course swimming, kayaking, canoeing on the lake ... and biking around the lake ... and the small beach is ideal for young children. A great place to enjoy the beauty of Massachusetts & New Hampshire!
This is our second stay at Cygnet cottage. We had a family reunion with 4 generations - 12 adults & 4 children. There is enough room for everyone plus we entertained additional family for an afternoon. The beach was perfect for my 2 & 5 year old grandchildren and the dock was just right for sitting in the sun while watching everything. The porch was a great gathering place for morning coffee & was big enough to fit all of us! The availability of paddle boat & kayaks were a great way to see the rest of the lake. The house had all the comforts of home. We hope to stay again in a few years perhaps with a few more grandkids.
Everything was great. The lake is so peaceful without large powerboats. We will be back again next year.
