This part of New England is beautiful and quaint and the cottage, brook, river, and West Cornwall town are as good as it gets.
We like the sound of the bubbling brook, the quiet of the woods, sitting on the deck surrounded by an amphitheater of 100 foot tall trees, jogging along the dirt road on the other side of the Housatonic River, walking through our woods or down our road to the River, the Covered Bridge, Wandering Moose Cafe and other shops in West Cornwall, kayaking and rafting on the River, hiking the nearby trails, going to the movies in Millerton, and visiting the nearby towns of Lakeville, Salisbury, Sharon, Kent, Amenia and Millerton.
This little charming cottage is nestled in the woods of a beautiful setting, with a brook and a river for walking by or going in. The little home had everything we needed, but we just loved the outdoors, all it offered and the chance to go--not too far--when we wanted to eat out, dine, shop and enjoy culture. This was a steal, a gem, for us busy folks who needed to slow way down.
I've stayed here twice while visiting my mother, and for us, it's perfect. Secluded, cozy, and homelike. We love walking down by the river too. I'm sure we'll be back.
I loved it because it was beautifull
Was looking for a quiet place off the beaten path to relax (if possible) with my 3 year old. This house was great -- equipped with everything you could need and in a gorgeous setting with plenty of activities regardless of the season. The owner provided great instructions and information to make the stay go off without any problem. Highly recommended.
My brothers and I spent 3 nights here in late October for our annual get-together. This cottage met every expectation I had of it. I'd rent it again.
The rental was clean, comfortable, and adequate for our needs. The grill works well(we grilled the four nights we were there) and the deck provides a good view of the surrounding yard( we saw two very large dear). If you are planning to do more than simple cooking, I recommend bringing some of your own equipment. The owner is very helpful with supplying information for your activities. If you check out the cottage you will find maps and other literature for the area. There are interesting books throughout the cottage.
The area is very beautiful – small interesting towns, plenty of water sports, and hiking. We brought our own kayaks and enjoyed the Housatonic River and saw two eagles while kayaking on Smudge Pond. The Audubon Society is 15 minutes away and is certainly worth visiting. I’m sure this area is stunning during the fall.
This VRBO is a quaint cottage near many popular hiking trails, Sharon beach and cute towns. We rented this place with a couple that had a 1-year-old. While everything is clean, this home has mostly original finishes - I'm talking GE fridge, stove and even the bathroom vanity from 1940s and all in working condition. The place has a fresh coat of paint and fairly new carpets and is clean for the most part. The barbecue is new and high quality and we enjoyed grilling on the deck and eating outside.
The only downside is the kitchen has a LOT of ants and there is definitely a mouse or mice somewhere as well. We put all the food in the fridge or double bagged. There is definitely a faint smell of animal urine when you enter the house, which I hope the owner will remedy.
Other activities include: walking, jogging, or biking along Upper River Road which runs three miles alongside the Housatonic River in West Cornwall; walking, jogging or biking on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail; visiting and walking in the Emily Winthrop MilesWildlife Sanctuary, 4 miles away; hiking the Appalachian Trail which passes through West Cornwall. Winter activities: The cottage is 10 minutes from the Mohawk Mountain Ski Area - 5 trails, 4 lifts and $30 lift tickets; and 45 minutes from Butternut Basin in Great Barrington, MA, and Catamount Ski Area in Hillsdale, NY.; there is snowshoeing or XC skiing at the Harlem Valley Rail Trail; and horse-drawn sleigh rides through the New England countryside at Loon Meadow Farm in Norfolk.
