About Victoria Gowan

My husband and I are retired and enjoy traveling to this, our second home. We hope you enjoy it as well.

Victoria Gowan purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Victoria Gowan chose Franklin

We designed and built this home in Cherokee Landing because of its unique beauty and location. It's only 1.25 hours from the Ashville airport, 30-45 minutes from Highlands/Cashiers, 45 minutes from Cherokee and Harrah's Casino, 25 minutes from Nantahala White Water Rafting Center, 15 minutes to the town of Franklin, NC and all of the antique malls, gem mining opportunities, shopping, and restaurants.

What makes this cabin unique

Fishing from the river bank, or fly fishing from the rocks in the river, while watching the grandchildren tubing down the river make this a unique location. This is a family friendly ATV loving neighborhood. PS. Free long distance and WiFi provided at our log home!

Guestbook comments from the owner

I am Victoria, the owner of River Bear Cabin, and just arrived at my custom log home and read some review in our guest book. Here is a terrific one:

"It's early sunday morning, cool with a light fog. In a few hours we will be on our way. We spent a week here with our 92 year old mother and good friends. It's hard not to write and not be sentimental. So many first time memories and experiences happened here....

Granda Betty, "mom" is what she's called, was awestuck with your home. She loved your high ceilings and home decor, often refering to it as a "castle". Betty went gem mining and cleaned two buckets at Rose Creek Gem Mine - loved it! Our friends took Betty tubing on your river! The more rough and quick the water, the more she squealed and laughed. She even said she would go again! Betty also took a motorcycle ride down to the river, where we enjoyed fishing, picnic dinner, and a lovely fire while we enjoyed good conversation and the soothing sounds of the Little Tennessee river.

We enjoyed going through the Franklin Gem Museum with over 6,000 specimens. We regularly went to the fresh fruit & vegetable stand on Rte 28 in Cowee - couldn't believe it - boiled peanuts!

Our friends were able to celebrate their 9th wedding anniversary this week - Magical! The went sight-seeing by motorcycle and were able to make memories to cherish. We took a 4 plus hour train ride in Bryson City. Well worth doing, beautiful views of the Nantahala river, the mountains, waterfaulls, banjo music and story telling. We also enjoyed a free concert, "Pickin" music in downtown Franklin at the Gazebo. Everywhere we went we were met with friendly and knowledgeable staff and local people.

Thanks you so very much for sharing your beautiful and comfortable home with us. We felt pampered and although there was six of us, we all could find quiet time when we wanted it. You gifted us with precious memories that we'll hold dear for a lifetime....Thank You!

Custom River Bear Log Cabin Overlooking Little Tennessee River
average rating of 4.875 based on 20 reviews

Great cabin surrounded by gorgeous scenery.

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is great and the location could not be better. It is situated high on a hill so that you can see the river and mountains from all angles on the surround deck. It's so nice to dine on the outdoor tables to the sound of the river. It's a bonus to find a cabin on the water that is also surrounded by trees. We enjoyed hiking down to the river and fishing and using the fire pit to make S'mores. Bryson City is less than an hour away, we spent one day there and rented kayaks from Bryson City Outdoors. (highly recommend this business for any outdoor activities). There also several good restaurants in BC.

The cabin is super clean and comfortable and the kitchen had all the supplies we needed to prepare many meals. The outdoor grill is a nice bonus and the wifi worked great for checking work emails before heading out for the day.

I would recommend this cabin without hesitation and would definitely book again in the future.

Amazing Cabin, Photos Do Not Do It Justice

  • 5 of 5

From the moment we walked in the view was breathtaking, mountains and river all in one. The Deck and balconies provide excellent view points for all of the surrounding area. Homeowner (Victoria) provided me all the information needed way before our arrival date which made the check in process flawless, especially after driving for 11 hours. Everything in the cabin was well up-kept, clean and tidy. The kitchen has everything you need to make home cooked meals (including spices, even though we brought our own). There was enough toiletries/linens to last us through our 4 night stay. Just in case, there is a Walmart near by to pick up anything else you need. The short walk down to the river led us to a nice picnic area and children's playground set that my daughter loved. I must admit, I was skeptical of the internet service as I had stayed in cabins before that falsely advertised "high speed" but we were able to connect and stream movies which was a must for my toddler. The cell booster did help when making phone calls but overall we just used WiFi. The drive to Bryson City was a bit longer than expected (about 35 minutes) due to the extensive winding road. If you're looking for places to eat, I recommend going into Main Street, Franklin.

Overall, we absolutely loved everything about this cabin, ample room and very comfy. We even met one of the neighbors while doing a bit of fishing on the river, very welcoming and friendly.

Note* The place to drop off the garbage, unfortunately for us, was closed on Jan 1st our departure date so do adhere to the recommendation and make trips as often as you can.

This property is amazing and very cozy. We loved it!

  • 5 of 5

This was our very first family vacation and it was very memorable! Although we arrived late due to the road closure, when we opened the door, all I can say is the drive was worth it. Dave and Vicki were very helpful with finding the alternate route and kept in touch the whole way. The cabin was a little farther than we were expecting from Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge so we did spend a lot of time driving back and forth (4 teenage girls all just wanted to shop!) and we didn’t get to explore the property as much as we wanted, but the time we did spend there was very peaceful. We will definitely have to make another trip (just us adults) so we can actually enjoy the quiet and scenery.

Owner's Response: We are delighted that Melissa and her family found the cabin to be a great place in the mountains. This was the first time in over ten years that a renter had difficulty getting to my custom log home due to icy roads in Gatlenburg. The home is in a 63 acre community 11 miles north of Franklin, N.C. and takes about 20 minutes to town. There is a good deal of things to do in town, which is listed on our VRBO site. We hope that the family comes again!

Thoroughly enjoyed sitting on the deck watching the sun set behind the mountains while enjoying a cold beverage. Loved the area.

Owner's Response: Everyone that rents River Bear Cabin talk about our huge deck and the beautiful sunsets over the distant mountains. In addition, October is a wonderful time to book our custom log home because of the gorgeous leaves changing into brilliant fall colors. To add to the experience, we have the Little Tennessee River less than a two minute walk down the gravel road. River Bear Cabin is overlooking one of the widest portions of the river, at approx. 100 yards wide! Usually, it is slow moving and not very deep. Our river is excellent for children & adults alike to wade no more that waist deep on the entire portion of our riverfront. And the fishing is awesome, as well! Thanks for the positive comments, LaDonna, and come back again..... Victoria

Family Memories

  • 5 of 5

We had an awesome time in the mountains and what a beautiful home to spend it in!

Every thing we needed was there , minus the food, and was neat as a pin.

We went zip lining and gem mining and the kids really enjoyed the river front. cant wait to come back, didn't want to leave!

Owner's Response: Thank you, Heather! My husband Dave, and I built River Bear Cabin with our comfort & enjoyment in mind. When we decided to offer our custom log home to others, we wanted to provide everything we possibly could think of to make a vacation a very special event. Many times, our guests ask about towels, or dishes, or coffee maker, or toilet paper because they are just not sure it will be provided; however, it is all there! We visit there several times a year, and we always check to make sure the necessary supplies are there for our vacationers. We are happy to hear that the Yoder family enjoyed some of the area's activities. There are white water trips, lake boat rentals, Harrah"s Casino, Ashville's Biltmore Estates, trout fishing, horseback riding, antiquing and so much more. And, of course, our Little Tennessee River is only two minutes down the gravel road from River Bear Cabin. Heather & family, come back again!
