Vera was born in Wyola, Montana on the Crow Indian Reservation. Vera’s mother Dorothy Williams owned an Inn in Wynla and father Francis Marian Williams worked for the railway system in Montana. Vera visited Hollywood and was in the process of establishing her career, at the time she married Dr. Effrus Freeman, an ophthalmologist to the stars.
In Hollywood, Vera worked at the telephone company doing secretarial work and then designed networks for wired music stations. She had a blind date with an eye specialist and that changed her life immediately. She resigned from her job and still hadn’t given up her dreams of being a movie star, but Dr Freemans said, “What do you want to do that for? I’ll give you everything.”
Vera's Villa purchased this villa in 1953
Mr. Freeman always wanted to come east. On a rainy day in 1953, Dr. Freeman visited Calvert County, Mr. Louis Goldstein introduced him to the eight hundred acres that was then Bancroft Estates. Vera renamed the estate White Sands and added three hundred more acres to develop the White Sands Community. When they first came here it was nothing but trees. In 1954, Mr. and Mrs. Freeman put a club house with white sand and palm trees. It was private for about 25 years. After that they opened it to the public and had the yachting club. That’s when there was nothing down at Solomons and the docks were successful. Tit was the only deep-water marina in Calvert County. Vera created White Sands Yacht Club with more than 100 boat slips on St Leonard Creek and St John’s Creek and also had a permit to put in 24 more slips.
Vera was inspired by Indian Casinos. She wanted White Sands to be another world filled with palm and banana trees. A getaway destination, where you can forget a hectic day and enjoy the beautiful view. Vera loved everything to be exotic, from the custom built leopard bar stools and herself.
Vera and her husband would travel the world and furnished the house and restaurant with souvenirs. After Mr. Freeman Died in 1980, Vera traveled on her own.
Vera loved her costumes. She would have her gowns made from Indian saris that she would find on her travels, She would have her seamstress make her the most beautiful dresses. She liked to dress up every night and entertain whoever came to dine.
In June 2006, Vera became a guest in her own domain. Vera’s Beach Club was reopened by neighbors Steve Stanley and Lisa DelRicco. On that date, Vera was honored by imprinting her hands in wet cement to mark her lifetime of luxury at Vera’s White Sands. Vera stated. “I didn’t find it like this 41 years ago. I made it this way.”
The things that Vera loved the most;
1. Her house in Hollywood
2. Her 58-foot Hatteras motor yacht she would travel to Florida and the Caribbean Islands.
3. 1960 Silver Cloud Rolls-Royce
We enjoyed the purple dining room, patio and pool area for socializing. It was so much fun to explore the house and wonder about Vera's life. The house is like a museum. On the downside, the kitchen was a modge-podge of dishes, glassware, utensils and cookware. There wasnt even a corkscrew or papertowels. The bedrooms had shampoo but did not have hand soap. The biggest concern was a major leak in the skylight in the kitchen. When it rained, the floors which are marble became extremely slippery. One of our guests fell and hurt her knee. I love the house enough to return if they can assure me that the skylight is fixed.
Gorgeous and Unique property, immaculately maintained , inside and out. Amenities as listed. Initially, we couldn't get in with the door code provided (perhaps we were unsure as to how to operate), but called the emergency number and someone was there within 5 minutes and provided a key to us.
The pool was amazing!!! Our group had no problem with the furniture, as some have indicated. We found the beds very comfortable, and the furniture in the living area were suitable for us. We did feel the kitchen, while useful and had everything (except for a microwave) just didn't go with the décor of the rest of the house - it is a light pink in color, and sorta plain. We LOVED looking at all the eclectic décor, and like others have mentioned, you feel like you are in a museum - reminded our group of an old restaurant we used to frequent (and miss) in Baltimore, called Haussner's.
Vera's Beach Club/Restaurant, right next door, just a very brief walk out the front door and up the steps/ramp had great food and a live band. We went there on Saturday night for a birthday celebration/dinner - it was great that everyone could have alcoholic drinks and no one had to drive, Perfect!!! We did not take advantage of the actual beach, as we preferred the pool inside the house.
We spent most of our time outside on the deck (plenty of seating) and pier enjoying the spectacular views of the creek/boats/kayakers/wildlife and landscaping...the flowers were just gorgeous!!
We did a day trip to Solomons, went to the Calvert Marine Museum which was interesting, we wanted to go to Calvert Cliffs State Park but a thunderstorm broke out so we had to dump that idea. We visited a local farm and bought fresh corn, tomatoes, and a huge cantaloupe that were the BEST tasting so far this year!! If you're ever in this area, a MUST restaurant, right on Rt 4, is "Jerry's Place". One word to sum up the food and service, OUTSTANDING! I highly recommend it to anyone ever in Southern, MD. The crab cakes are 100% jumbo lump, zero filler, the best I've ever had. Soft shell crabs were amazing. The fried haddock and stewed tomatoes, OMG! The owner personally came to our table and brought out several samples of food for us since it was our first time here. Jerry conversed with us throughout our entire dining experience. One of the best meals I've ever had.
We look forward to returning next year, and for a much longer stay, as we were only here for 4 days!!
This house had everything you could possibly want in a getaway weekend! We had a great time at this rental. The rental property and amenities were exactly as described in the listing. The property was very clean from top to bottom which was very nice. Very good kitchen supplies and entertainment. We particularly enjoyed the dock, canoe, and fishing equipment. I really cannot think of any complaints about this place. Everyone in our group was very happy with decision to stay here and would definitely do so again in the future.
THANK YOU Casey for helping me with several questions I had about the VILLA :)
We are looking forward to be back soon for another event .
NOTE: The property owner was gracious enough to give my family a free dinner at the beach club for our troubles. It added up to the cost of a weeknight stay and for his desire to make things right, I am appreciative.
Here's why he had to though...Yes, the decor is something to behold but grand surroundings mean nothing if the beds are cheap and the basic amenities promised aren't available.
I spent my entire 1st night +the next morning dealing with unhappy family members & trying to resolve issues. I had to deal w/ phone calls, the pool guy, the electrician, & a cable guy who never showed. A non-functional TV never got fixed. Several family members & I searched high and low for things that should have been easily provided. I ended up buying things for the house because we needed it. I did more home maintenance here than in my own home & I was supposed to be on vacation.
Breakdown: 1) The Main king bed is hard and feels cheap. The queen in the next room over is also as hard as a college dorm bed and squeaks with every movement making it difficult for my aunt and uncle to sleep. They ended up leaving to stay with another family member who lives nearby. 2) WiFi is advertised but is so weak it's practically nonexistent. This was a huge problem because there was not a single guest that didn't have a device that needed it. It's 2015. Surely for the money made on this place they can figure out how to make WiFi available in every room. 3) The TV in the Sunrise room was inoperable. It was a Comcast issue that never got resolved during our stay. 4) The shower in Vera's suite was broken in that only the ceiling shower head worked. This never got resolved as the caretaker lives an hour and a half away in Anapolis and there is apparently no one locally that was willing to help us. 5) The contact info in the HomeAway App was incorrect. The restaurant manager has nothing to do with Villa operations but her private cell was given along with the restaurant's number. 6) The ovens in the kitchen were so filthy my mother did not want to use them. 7) No one told us how to use the pool heater (if it even exists). The water was so cold it became a game to see who could stand it the longest.
Suggestion: A guest info book w/instructions for things in the home - how to connect to Wifi w/password, how to heat the pool, where to find trash bags/detergent, contact info for local help w/property.
Location was very easy to find. Our group of ten adults stayed at Vera's Villa for three nights. Fascinating home, furnishings and collections to view. We enjoyed reading about Vera in the booklet on table in living room. Instructions to gain entry and wifi access very easy to follow. Bedrooms were comfortable and clean, and indoor pool was a nice treat. Kitchen appliances worked fine, and there were plenty of dishes, glasses and cookware available for our use. As others have noted, the living room furniture is not particularly comfortable, - so we spent most of our time sitting in the dining room or outside. Laundry / workout room was locked after the pool man removed cover for us on day two. Luckily we had retrieved bath towels for each guest prior to door getting locked, but no longer had access to laundry machines. Phone numbers for assistance did not answer (weekend), however, it did not negatively influence our stay.
Highly recommend this rental for a fun get-a-way.
The place is an awesome experience; although not comfortable furniture as many note. However, beware the amenities listed as not "as readily" available as noted. VERY VERY limited hours of access to outdoor pool and beach area and it is not disclosed properly. Makes a huge difference in convenience and time used. Will not be returning for these reasons. Definitely not full disclosure on the website, so you should ask detailed questions when/if you book
