About Ginger Hankins

We have so enjoyed our first two years of hosting. We have met new friends from around the world, sharing stories and information about the Shepherdstown area. The cottage is right next door to our home. We are available if needed, but value guest privacy.

Ginger Hankins purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Ginger Hankins chose Shepherdstown

We share this lovely ten acres with deer, foxes, turtles, frogs, herons, turkeys, owls, pileated woodpeckers, wildflowers and other flora and fauna. While we do enjoy eating out in Shepherdstown and visiting the local attractions, we especially love our quiet weekends at home.

What makes this cottage unique

We welcome visitors from NCTC, Freshwater Institute, and Shepherd University. Christmas in Shepherdstown, Freedom's Run and Contemporary American Theatre Festival are big events in town. Shepherdstown Visitor's Center has an excellent website that details all our lovely town has to offer.

very nice holiday cottage in a historical area

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 6 nights in this very lovely cottage owned by friendly Ginger. Everything you can imagine you need during a stay in a holiday cottage was there! Big green garden with garden furniture. Plenty of towels, dishwasher, washingmachine and dryer, bbq. We are a family of 4 (2 parents and 2 teenagers) from the Netherlands and had a holiday of 3 weeks in the USA; 1 week Boston, 1 week NYC and 1 week in Washington DC (Shepherdstown). We came to visit Washington DC, but were surprised by the historical background of the area (Sharpsburg and Harpers Ferry). And because of that we made little daytrips in the area. But also stayed in the cottage to enjoy the peace and silence of this property. We really enjoyed our stay.

A wonderful respite on a long trip

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I are snowbirds and like to take our sweet time going to and from FL. This was our first stay in Sheperdstown, but we expect it will not be our last. Ginger has provided a well provisioned and furnished place of comfort in a wonderful setting just a few miles off of I 81 close to both Sheperdstown and Sharpsburg, the site of the Antietam Civil War Battlefield, and not far from Harper's Ferry. We highly recommend it.

Beautiful Cottage in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely stay at the Cottage for a warm October weekend in Shepardstown, WV. It's minutes from the quaint downtown of Shepardstown and the C&O canal towpath. Ginger adds extras to the Cottage experience that really make it feel like home and are very much appreciated. She supplied us with coffee makings, yogurt, bread, butter, milk and cream for the coffee. There were also packages of instant oatmeal if you were so inclined! The house is very clean, and tidy. The beds were soft and comfy. There's no cable service, but there's very good WiFi, and the TV comes with Netflix, Amazon Prime and other services. It was a lovely, relaxing weekend.

Beautifully done home in a peaceful setting

  • 5 of 5

We just had a wonderful week in the woods at this home. It is comfortable, well decorated and well stocked. Nearby we enjoyed hiking and biking at Harper's Ferry, Green Briar State Park, Orr's u-pick farm, and the dining in Shepardstown.

Perfect space

  • 5 of 5

All we wanted was a few days away from it all. Granddaughter leaves for college the end of the month so it is an important transition time for her. We settled right in and enjoyed our stay more than we imagined. The location and cottage are just perfect. Fresh peaches and breakfast foods awaited us. Our first evening we got settled in and had a lovely dinner in Shepherdstown. The next morning we left in and then went back to Shepherdstown to explore the town. After hours in the bookstore and more good food, we returned to the cottage for an evening of games and laughter.
