We stayed here with our two young kids for a week and absolutely loved it. The property itself is stunning, huge lawns, a fantastic swimming pool overlooking the river. The beds were so comfortable and the decor is magnificent. There is so much space inside and outdoors for the kids to play and explore. It was the perfect place for us to destress and slip easily and seamlessly into holiday mode.
It's super close to the Tiger Kingdom and the extreme sports centre which was great for us.
I absolutely loved everything about this place, I highly recommend this for family vacations or large group getaways such a hens trip.
We recently stayed at this villa with our 4 and 2 yr old children. We absolutely loved our time here. We were in the pool at least once every day. We enjoyed delicious local take-out for dinner each evening on the outside patio. We were well taken care of by the property manager, Aly. Plenty of activities great for young children are closer to this property than driving all the way into Chiang Mai- bug museum, paper factory, tiger zoo, monkey camp, etc. We also spent a couple of days in Chiang Mai, and felt quite relieved to be coming home to this peaceful, private villa at the end of those days. We are already recommending this place to friends, and we would stay again in a heartbeat.
We were a group of 11 and this huge house fit us very comfortably.
-There are many, many large, wonderful bedrooms. The house can easily sleep 14.
-Each bedroom is beautiful. It was hard to choose which room to select for myself and my husband and which to give to the kids as they each seemed like they were out of a fairytale or some type of (Thai) Victorian mansion.
-The house was decorated beautifully, from paint colors to lighting fixtures to artwork on the walls.
-We spent one day just enjoying the property (not touring the rest of Chiang Mai) and walking the quiet streets nearby filled with rice fields, simple homes, local temples. It was a very lovely, slow paced, pleasant, interesting day.
-Aly, the house manager is lovely. She also had other people working on the property who were helpful.
-The house, while clean and beautiful, is a bit worn. The windows and screens and doors don't all shut properly which means lots of mosquitos and bugs can and do make their way in to the house. We absolutely could not sleep without a fresh coating of bug spray.
-The pool had many frogs, alive and dead. The kids still went in but it was totally unappealing to me.
-We had sporadic hot water in some showers and no hot water in others.
-The shower heads in several bathrooms were too low to wash your hair in (even if you held it in your hand).
-One night, in heavy rain, the roof leaked, a lot. There were other nights of rain when it did not.
-The kitchen does not have air conditioning and is very hot. While the outside dining areas can seat a large group very elegantly, there is not large indoor dining space. While the rest of the house is gorgeous, the main kitchen, which functional, most definitely, is not beautiful.
The neutral but good to know:
-As the listing says, the house is 20km from downtown. With traffic, that can be a long ride. There can be pluses to being outside of the city (and we found many) but if you are wondering how far 20 km is when traveling in Chiang Mai, it is a lot. We are not talking about 20 km on a US super-highway.
-Internet works very well in most sections of the house but not all.
-If you have young kids in your group be very aware that the staircases, while extremely attractive, are dangerous. They are open between the steps. Additionally, the railings on the upstairs porches, again, while beautiful, are not at all child safe.
We just had a fabulous stay at this enchanting home. The kids loved it and played at the river and hiked the land. The land is enormous and filled with wonders and treats like mangoes and coconuts and bananas. We found everything we needed including crisp white sheets and towels, pool towels, beautiful furnishings and lounges and most of all Ally the helper was delightful. It’s a big house so I recommend it to families and friends traveling together, it would be beautiful for weddings or parties or retreats. We were a smaller group but explored and enjoyed the whole house and all its lovely areas to lounge and relax. Highly recommended!
Mae Rim is the rural outskirts just to the north of the moated center of Chiang Mai. The area is quickly becoming a suburb of wealthy Thais and foreigners with extraordinary villas and resorts. Our River Edge property is located very near to tourist attractions like, Tiger Kingdom, the Orchid and Butterfly Farms, Elephant Camps, X-Centre Extreme Sports, Waterfalls and Botanical Gardens, the Four Seasons Hotel and many golf courses.
