Newly built by architect/owner this 900 s.f. Eco dwelling made of weathering steel and stone lives large right on the Taos de Fernando river, in a grove of 100 year old cottonwood and willow trees. Step out to the 12' x 20' stone paver deck and enjoy a relaxing soak in the new hot tub. Enjoy our new private meditation hut by the river. Located just 3 miles from Taos, near hiking trails and ski areas, great restaurants, galleries and museums of Taos. The high 10' vaulted ceilings high windows let the sun and forest views in. Experience the latest in technology with 2 HDTVs, with Blu Ray DVD, wireless Internet and video, electric Zen fireplace, and warm radiant tile floors. Custom contemporary maple woodwork & cabinets built by the owner's architect son reflect the water theme with elegant inlay designs and are topped by black honed granite. Ideal for a get away for a couple or two, with a bedroom and bath at opposite ends of the house. If more beds are needed check out our listing 209546 just 1/4 mile away with 3BRs and 2BA, 2000 s.

Construction Details: Since the property is in a sensitive ecological area next to the Taos de Fernando River, water conservation and protection is of primary concern. Note; (river flow is seasonal as with many streams in the southwest). Every plumbing fixture is water efficient, from high end Toto dual flush toilets to sensor faucets in the bathrooms and kitchen. We keep track of water usage with our water meter and have saved 1000's of gallons of water. We averaged with help of our guests just 33 gallons/day total indoor water use vs. a national average of 94 gallons/day/person* (American Water Works Assoc.)

The house is green built with zero VOC paints and materials, energy efficient insulation, appliances and heating system. The house is tiled throughout with in the latest in floor electric heat, which is energy efficient and comfortable. Objects in the rooms are heated and your are comfortable with the heat set at a lower temperature. We also recycle all our trash in special recycling bins.

Location details: Located just 3 miles from Taos, NM. Great restaurants, more than 75 art galleries, 4 museums, Taos Pueblo, numerous shops, great live music and arts programs. Great skiing is just 35-40 minutes away. Hiking trails nearby in Carson National Forest with pinion pine forests. River rafting, fishing, and mountain biking in the late spring and summer months. !

Nearby large guest house also available: If more beds and a larger house is needed check out our listing 'Retreat at Rancho Canyon' 209546 just 1/4 mile away with 3BRs and 2BA, 2000 s.f. This can be rented in combination with the Rio house to accommodate larger groups and family reunions.

About David and Meredith Vaughn

My wife and I have enjoyed Taos for much of our 43 years of marriage. We built a home in Taos in 2000 and now have completed another creative collaboration, with help from our son Jordan of Vonmod - a new 2BR vacation rental house on the Taos de Fernando river and love to share it with others.

David and Meredith Vaughn purchased this house in 2010

Why David and Meredith Vaughn chose New Mexico

We chose to design and build our second house in Taos because we love the area so much- the natural beauty of the forest, river and high desert environment, and history, art and food of Taos. We enjoy creating inviting and comfortable living spaces that take advantage of the exceptional natural surroundings of the area.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This house is so comfortable and has everything you need. It's a perfect size, cozy, serene, secluded, yet close to town. Wow! We had the best time. My husband, me and our Husky spent a week here and it snowed on our way in. We woke up the next morning to well over a foot of snow. It was so beautiful. The little creek that runs behind it, the patio, the hot tub, the meditation hut--it was just fabulous. They think of everything. Has tons of supplies. I really loved it and would highly recommend this house. The design of the house is perfect to share as well. I would definitely stay here again.

Taos Eco Rio Dwelling had everything we wanted for our stay. Kitchen is really well equipped. The hot tub was a real pleasure after being out all day. Very quiet place. Loved the meditation hut.

Peaceful Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay here. The house is lovely, clean and comfortable, and the kitchen is very well stocked. The meditation hut is wonderful--now my husband thinks we need one in our backyard, too! Highly recommended; we would certainly stay again if we come back to Taos.

Very nice!

  • 4 of 5

High quality, comfortable furnishings including the beds; washer and dryer. Really liked the design and decor!

Didn't like the spray automatic faucets in the bathrooms. Had to use a glass to collect water when brushing our teeth.

When you walked by the one in the 2nd bedroom it would go off. Also took a long long time to heat up to wash my face - wasting water in the end...

Overall though, great place. I hope to return some time!

Review of Taos Rio Eco Holiday Sept 11-15, 2016

  • 5 of 5

The Taos Rio Eco property is an excellent location for a VRBO holiday. The eco friendly design is very well done and it has all the facilities required for a week long stay. The internet and Dish network both worked very well and the kitchen had all the required kitchen appliances as well as a wide range of dishes and glass ware. The location was outside Taos but still close enough to select a new place to eat every day. If one tires of Taos you can take the Enchanted Circle an 80 mile drive that passes through five smaller towns north of Taos with a wide range of cafes and cantinas.

We enjoyed the mountain hikes and the scenery around Taos. Most of these are in the national forest and therefore you can take your dog off leash and let him/her roam freely. We were there in mid-September and the weather was perfect--cool sleeping at night and sunny during the day for hiking and enjoying the hot tub in the late afternoon.

With two bedrooms and bathrooms the house is perfect for a couple with children or for two couples. For certain if we are back in Taos we will plan to stay in the Taos Rio Eco house.

Wonderfully relaxing and close to Taos

  • 4 of 5

The Taos Eco Dwelling is a charming 900 square foot two bedroom two bath home. We stayed for an extended weekend and had a wonderful time relaxing on the back porch, the hot tub, and meditation hut. The home is well taken care off and includes a multitude of eco friendly elements. The faucets are set automatically which can be challenging to get used to. The furnishings and cabinetry are quite nice. Even with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and one overall living and kitchen space is big enough for two couples.

The home is very close to the highway and unfortunately a sharp curve in the road so entering and exiting the home is a bit hectic. Even with the close location to the road you cannot hear traffic from the road. The home is also in the middle of a camping and RV park area. We had some loud neighbors and a barking dog but overall you could not tell you were that close to people in general. The photos of the home are realistic but the stream only runs during the wet season or during snowmelt and there are no hiking trails right out off of the property.

The owners of the property are very nice, email back quickly and checked in with us during check in. Their notebooks are well written and give you a lot of information about Taos and the surrounding areas.

After a long trip from the east coast walking into this lovely home and hearing the stream flowing outside was fantastic. We all felt right at home and wasted no time relaxing and sitting in the hot tub. Everything we needed was there. The windows open at night and the cool air was refreshing. We had a hard week at an art workshop and at the end of the day just wanted to relax and enjoy the back deck. We kept missing the driveway so we tied a scarf around a tree. that was our only complaint that it was easy to miss. Thank you also to your great cleaning staff. 2 Jersey girls and 1 from LAX
