Kentucky Natural Bridge State Park and the Red River Gorge is down the road for those obsessed with arches and cliff climbing. There is easy access to Natural Stone Arches sculpted by 70 million years of wind and water and towering cliffs encircling steep, forested slopes and narrow stream valley called the 'Clifty Wilderness' by cliff climbers and naturalists. The hiking trails are Easy, Moderate and Strenuous covering hundreds of miles and maintained for hikers of all ages. Yet, if you are looking for the primitive, less traveled trails, you will not be disappointed. Note: The Gorge is a National Natural Landmark and is managed year round by US Forest Service.

About Kenneth and Sheila Brown

We enjoy living in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. Although we are not totally isolated, traffic jams are rare. The air seems fresher and clearer. We enjoy traveling on the 2-lane blacktop road (KY 11) lined with trees and wildflowers; a couple times a wildcat has leaped across our route and scampered up the roadside hillside; too fast to get a picture, but a memory was created. One early morning, Ken rounded a corner about a mile from here and a black bear was running ahead of him in his lane. Ken was braking and the car was almost sitting on the bear's butt when finally, it veered off into the forest. In the winter, we feed the wild turkeys. Turkeys have a hard time surviving bad winters. There are days that we are delighted with things that happen in our environment; this is a good thing for us - to be delighted.

Kenneth and Sheila Brown purchased this cabin in 2003

Why Kenneth and Sheila Brown chose Campton

Sheila's Tale: My mother and I would ride a taxi to Natural Bridge and spend the day. She packed our food in a red plastic carrying cooler with 'Coke' written on the front. Home canned green beans, and fried potatoes, corn bread fritters wrapped in a dish cloth, a mason jar of water and a bunch of green onions were our food for the day. We hiked the trails and swam in a lake with turtles and fishes nibbling on our toes. The taxi would pick us up in the evening and take us home to Irvine, KY, 30 miles away. I learned to appreciate trees and wildflowers and the beauty of nature in the Natural Bridge, Red River Gorge and Danial Boone Forest. My heart has been softened to nature's beauty throughout the world because of my visits to this area. And, I brought my daughters, their friends and my Girl Scout Troop here. We camped out and did all the things that I did in childhood and more. Further, I brought my grandchildren here. Where else could I retire but to the place that heart-felt memories of my mother teaching me about nature and the natural world and, me, in turn, teaching my daughters and grandchildren to cook a meal on an open fire; and further, helping young girls experience the self awareness that almost everyone has bad hair in the morning. My heart is here because what I value is here: all kinds of natural beauty. I am here and I welcome you to visit us at Kentucky Wildflowers, LLC. You're gonna love it.

Ken's Tale: It has been my life-long dream to live in a log cabin on the hill in the mountains of Eastern Kentucky. We live on the farm year round.

What makes this cabin unique

We have 150 acres to hike. There are trails cleared for convenience and enjoyment; the trees and flowers can be enjoyed during nature walks. Also, you can invent your own trail if you want to get off the beaten path. Best of all, a creek runs through this property; the creek has never been completely dry. Some of the holes are deep enough to get really wet. The property is called Wildcat Hollow and is surrounded by cliffs. A cool breeze blows all summer down the hollow across the creek. At night, birds get tuned up and sing. You can see the stars when the clouds are gone and it is so dark at night.

What a wonderful, far from austere Cabin. Every comfort, but still a rustic feel. Thank you

Owner's Response: Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We are thankful for this Indiana family of seven. They celebrated their son's brief holiday leave (from the Army) staying in Lillie's Cub Cabin; we send a BIG thank you to their son for his service to our Country. This family arrived in three vehicles (2 Jeeps and 1 truck) ready for off road trails. News: Hollerwood Park is an off-road trail system for Jeeps, ATV's, horses and other off terrain vehicles. Hollerwood is open for business. Indiana family, you and your son will be in our prayers. Be safe. Be careful. God bless. And, HAPPY TRAILS. Kenneth and Sheila Brown

Relaxing and accommodating.

The owners are very helpful. They brought us firewood when we needed it and brought me to an auto mechanic when the car broke down.

Owner's Response: Crisis while on vacation!!! This guest had a family of 6 (husband/wife, children and grandparents). The alternator went out of their SUV the day before they were to leave going towards Creation Museum, Kentucky/Ohio area; their reservations were already made. This guest followed Ken to a business/mechanic that we have confidence in. Eric, owner of the business, worked our guest in, ordered the alternator, fixed the SUV and they exited Wildcat Hollow around 3:00 p.m., waving as they drove down the driveway. We are going to be with our guests in their time of need. Whether it is a mechanic, medical issues, food purchases or WHAT CAN WE DO NEXT? There is an insurance company that states, " You're in good hands with..." Well, Ken and I are not as good as this insurance company, but we are pretty good at taking care of our guests. Additionally, we offered to let our guests stay an extra night (FREE) because of their extra auto expense. These guests hailed from Minnesota. We would like to invite these folks back and any other Minnesota residents. Happy trails.

Nice getaway near Red River Gorge

  • 4 of 5

Small cabin, very clean with kitchen, master bedroom and cable TV. Firepit outside plus charcoal grill out back. Upstairs loft with bunkbeds for kids or grandkids. We use this cabin as a base for hiking in the gorge and Natural Bridge State Park and a way to avoid insects and bad weather. I would rate it higher if the kitchen were better equipped, but we plan to return.
