Aloha from Kehena Beach Villa!
Perched high on the edge of a lush coconut studded absolute oceanfront sea cliff at the dead end of this quaint coastal beach community's most exclusive cul de sac stands this romantic gated landmark villa that was thoughtfully designed to be enjoyed by a couple who desire a level of privacy, comfort, safety and luxury that is more akin to a high end resort but is value priced and capable of accommodating a group of up to 8 adults if desired.
The the property has exclusive views of the magnificent Kehena Cove including the Kehena Black Sand Beach all the way to the tip of the cove where the villa is situated and assures a high level of privacy and exclusivity that is not shared by neighboring vacation rentals. There are no immediate homes on either side along the coast of the villa which is surrounded by 6 foot solid lava rock walls and accessed by a coded artistic gate that was custom designed by famed Honolulu based French sculptor Frederic Zimmer. The entire oceanfront block is adorned by a series of artistic gates and custom matching light fixtures that automatically illuminate the gorgeously landscaped lava rock walls nightly. The only other oceanfront home on the block is the smaller sister residence which is equally private and luxurious.
The villa is a landmark for Kehena Beach and is the closest oceanfront residence to the beach. It is situated on a large oceanfront parcel
and spans nearly 200 feet along a 50 foot high sea cliff that is typically teeming with sea birds. The lucky guests of the villa will not only enjoy the direct views of Kehena Beach and Bay, but also the extraordinary sunrises and moonrises and will experience near constant cooling trade winds due to the primarily northeasterly orientation of the oceanfront villa.
The oceanfront deck, or 'lanai' has been updated and redesigned, nearly doubling its size in 2014 per our former guest's recommendations and is certain to be the most popular living area of the villa. It features a large and new refreshing jetted Endless pool in which one may enjoy the stunning views while relaxing or swimming in the solar heated water. At night time it can be illuminated to enjoy a nighttime swim or just sit and watch the stars! The pool can be accessed from either the open uncovered lanai or the covered pool 'cabana' sides which has a translucent roof and comfortable outdoor furniture facing the pool and beach view. The tiled lanai is furnished with teak furniture including a custom bar, adjustable cushioned chaise loungers, and bar height dining table and chairs. One has the option of dining 'al fresco' or under the covered portion of the lanai which has a translucent roof to provide the added illumination of the stars and moon at night. The oceanfront railing is clear glass. The Endless pool directly abuts the deck on 2 sides so you can just step right in. There is an outdoor lava rock shower with hot water adjacent to the pool deck.
The courtyard to the villa greets you with a pond and lava rock waterfall feature and a stunning variety of guppies and goldfish. An adjacent screened 'lobby' area is well furnished to accommodate your party and is the ideal site to gather in the evening by the soothing sounds of the waterfall and the chorus of coqui frogs that it invites. The grounds are professionally landscaped and maintained. The garden foliage is striking and includes many varieties of bromeliads, orchids and heliconias.
The gym is a recent addition and has a wall of sliding glass doors that overlook the courtyard gardens. It has a wall mounted TV/DVD player with access to over 250 DishTV channels as well as a blender, fridge, and sink for your convenience. Per our former guests recommendations, the gym has been updated to include a hybrid elliptical trainer/recumbent bicycle so that a lower impact cardiovascular workout can be accomplished. Dumb bells and a Gold's Platinum professional gym that is equipped even for bench pressing or squats without the need for a spotter is provided.
The oceanfront yard is terraced with a lava rock walkway above that has a unique imported covered teak swing for two. Below there is a grassy lawn dotted with mature coconut trees and a cozy hammock for two! You will also encounter a new 9 person oceanfront spa. Don't forget to bring your I-Pod so you can plug it into the spa outlet and enjoy your favorite tunes.
If you can not resist the urge to visit Kehena Beach, it is a mere 5 minute walk from this, the closest oceanfront residence. This gorgeous strip of sand is not to be visited by the faint of heart. Although nudity is generally deemed unlawful in Hawaii, the beach has been routinely frequented by naturists since its formation back in 1955 after a small lava flow. Sturdy shoes or Tiva's are recommended to walk down the rocky trail to the beach. It is steep in some places and not deemed suitable for young toddlers, the elderly, or anyone who might have significant physical limitations. It is, however, well worth the effort. The black sand, unlike most of Hawaii's 'black' sand beaches, is granular and pure black. The beach itself is reputed to be among Hawaii's most scenic beaches.
Kehena Bay is perhaps best known for the Spinner Dolphins that frequent the beach year round and occasionally can be seen swimming among local swimmers. It is not unusual to see Spinner Dolphins performing acrobatics with the naked eye directly in front of the house. Whales can occasionally be viewed during the season from about November to April. At times , one can hear the majestic sounds of the mother Humpback Whales communicating with their calfs, particularly throughout the evening and night. Sea turtles can be spotted year round. The reef below is teeming with marine life and on calmer days one can look down and see a wide variety of reef fish.
First time visitors to Kehena Beach are discouraged from entering the ocean until they have talked with our property manager, particularly the young, elderly, and those with physical limitations should avoid. As with anything Mother Nature provides she should be respected for it's power and unpredictability! Swimming with the dolphins should not be attempted unless you are a good swimmer and feel safe being a couple of hundred yards out in the ocean! Undoubtedly, there are frequently opportunities to watch a considerable number of people swimming with the dolphins, but to do so as a malahini (newcomer) is not without risk to the life and safety of the swimmer. The beautiful but rocky shoreline can prove to be unforgiving.
There is a drum circle that regularly occurs Sundays on the beach. You can view it on U-tube. It tends to be reminiscent of the sixties. The atmosphere is laid back and includes a very eclectic crowd. There are no facilities at Kehena Beach , but you are guests of the nearest oceanfront estate to the beach, so you are only minutes away by foot from all the comforts you may desire .
You may wish to access a lunar calendar and make a reservation around the time of the full moon. The experience of watching the moonlight shimmering on Kehena Bay cannot be aptly described with words. On certain months, you may be afforded the opportunity to watch the moon rise over the ocean horizon.
We look forward to Hosting you!

Kehena Beach Estate
We manage this Amazing Villa for our close friend and Neighbor of many years. He built this Luxury Villa to share with everyone the beauty of the Puna Coast.
Aloha and E Komo Mai!
The opportunity to build right on the cliff and capture the amazing views overlooking Kehena Black Sand Beach home to spinner dolphins and humpback whales in winter months ! The East side of Hawaii captures amazing sunrises and constant trade winds.
Located along the Puna Coast and right on the cliff's edge, gated and very private & exclusive!
It is really a great place to stay at. The kind of place I only see in magazine about where the famous stay!!! The location is fantastic, the decoration is great, everything is available. The beds are very comfy, and although I normally need to be in total darkness to sleep, no problem at all. I just wish I could return soon, having a drink on the terrace... Enjoy
We were in Hawaii for two weeks, visiting multiple islands, and I wish would could have spent the entire time here! The home is even more beautiful than pictured. Our greeting and arrival tour were generous and thoughtful. The sound of the ocean, the views, the kitchen equipment (we cooked in quite a bit), the bedrooms - all worked perfectly for our group of 7. The location is remote enough to allow magnificent light-free views of the night sky but convenient to the quaint little town of Pahoa. Many people seem to favor Kona for a visit to the Big Island; I would return here in a heartbeat!
Never having stayed on the Hilo side of the Big Island and having the impression that it rains frequently, we were hesitant...and it did rain, but only for a few minutes at a time, and really not much. It was sunny and warm, the waves on the beach were so relaxing both day and night, as were the tree frogs that serenaded us each evening.
Tim gave excellent recommendations, we even went back to Kaleo's Restaurant a couple times; and don't miss 'Uncle Robert's' if you are there on a Wed night-go early, stay late.
The property was lovely - just what our family needed for the last week of out Hawaii vacation. The owners offered great suggestions for restaurants and activites. Some issues with the wifi, which the homeowner addressed for us. Loved the pool. Saw dolphins frolicking and rainbows daily. Loved the outdoor shower, and koi pond. Overall a wonderful visit.
(1) One of the most incredible views we'd ever seen. Just stunning. Fantastic stargazing. Thunderous, mesmerizing wave sounds.
(2) Excellent weather for the east side. Less rain than Hilo and the ocean breezes make for clean air with no "vog".
(3) Secluded, secure location with amenities and off-the beaten path attractions within easy reach.
(4) Prior to our arrival, the main contact (Illiahi) was responsive and helpful, answering several inquiries about services / amenities in the area.
Downsides / surprises:
(1) Almost none of the windows are clear, obscuring the incredible view. The windows were not dirty, but they all appeared to have moisture trapped inside the panes. Obviously this is a humid climate, but given the view I would have expected better windows.
(2) Odd layout for larger groups. We rented the entire property (main house + 2 side cottages), which is advertised as sleeping 8, but there isn't anywhere for a group that size to easily dine together. The indoor dining table seats 6. There is a small table on the patio that seats 4. For meals we had to either tag team, split up, or have some people balance their plates on the outdoor sofa. Not an issue for smaller groups.
(3) Several advertised amenities were hard to use, access, or find. The hot tub is awkward to get to and the cover is so heavy that two adults could barely get it off and on. The photos showed a hammock but we only found hammock hooks (and got no response to our email inquiry about the hammock). Much of the gym equipment is rusty and musty-smelling.
(4) Cooking as a group is challenging. The kitchen is functional and reasonably well equipped (though no working toaster) but not well ventilated and with an open electric stove, gets very hot. The BBQ grill is near the front door, well away from the pool deck (off the back door) where people are likely to gather, so anyone handling the grill is pretty isolated.
(5) Owners were difficult to reach during our stay. We never met them and, while they were very responsive before our arrival, they didn't respond to our email inquiry while we were there. The phone number they provided was not in service. On the flip side - plenty of privacy.
Overall, I'd say the view and location are 5-star, while the house itself is more 3- to 4-star, large and fairly comfortable but oddly designed and not really "luxurious." Better suited for a small group in the main house than a larger group.
This is a great house. The location is amazing on a small cliff overlooking the ocean. Fundamentally this side of the island is a jungle. Its amazing Its about 35 minutes to Hilo which is a modest size city with anything you need. Recommend Hilo Bay Café and the pancake house by the airport. Theres a couple good waterfalls close to Hilo and ziplining. Really neat small mountain town on the way to Akaka Falls. Stop at Mr Ed's Bakery. Amazing.
However, Puhua is only about 12 miles easy drive from the house and there are couple really good places to eat. One was 4 stars good, seriously. We ate there 3 times its so good. Theres also a market there. Everything you really need.
Its about 1 hour and 45 minutes to Kona. A very busy city with lots of tourist. We spent our time all over the island so it didn't matter to us. We put 900 miles on the jeep in a week. We just wanted away from the touristy areas but close enough to sites and services. Everyday we watched about 50 spinner dolphins come within about 200 yards and jump and play for about an hour. You can see a beautiful black sand beach from the house and its about a five minute walk over to it. The most people we saw over there at one time was about 12. About 10 minutes up the road are the tide pools Tim mentioned. Great snorkeling! The parking area for the hike to see the lava is about 12 minutes away! Then its a 10 mile round trip hike and youre there. It was fantastic. We didn't rent bikes. I suggest you do. Make it much easier.
Another thing I suggest is the Blue Hawaiian helicopter tours. Their helicopter is luxurious and our pilot Marco was the best. We did the Big Island Spectacular and that takes off in Kona. Its 2 hours and we saw the volcano. Its cool but better on the ground. Lava is something you have to feel with all the senses. The spectacular part of the flight was the valleys, waterfalls and cliffs. You can do just that part of the flight from the Hilo airport. Highly recommend it.
I have to mention our hosts Tim and Iliahi. They were great! The met us there, showed us around and told us some good tips about the area. The house was spotless. I called him a couple times because a bulb went out and the pool seemed warm. Both taken care of next morning. Called with questions and he always called or emailed right away. They even called a couple times just to check on us. So nice! You'll be glad you stayed here!
The views from this house are worth every penny! I ate breakfast on the patio every morning and just watched the sunrise. The pool was a perfect temp and we swam every day. In the evenings I fell asleep to the sounds of the waves. I very much enjoyed my stay! Be warned the closest town (and its small) is a short drive and youre about 45min from Hilo. To get to the beach it is a rocky climb down and some of the people are not clothed :)
